i ordered this because it is a dedicated router and will not share cpu power with a wireless card so it should be faster. well at least in theory. i have built routers from repurposed machines in the past and am familiar with several open source operating systems. ip fire monowall untangle and clearOS, to name a few. i will see how this performs in comparison and keep an objective opinion. stay tuned for updates. i uploaded some initial specs not found here in the site. looks like this thing will do some work in a short time. i will update long term on this review later.

Im partner in a multi-national MSP, and have deployed hundreds of Mikrotik devices. In short, this is the best bang-for-your-buck router possible for a small-medium size business. The RB3011 is an absolute monster router for the price. $170 for a 1U 10-port gigabit, SFP, and 6Gbps of WAN>LAN potential throughput. Though none of the ports can go faster than 1Gbps, the processing power is still there. When I ran a comparison of the specs between this and say, an equivalent Sonicwall (already lower-end gear), its $170 for a RB3011-RM vs a $3,400 for a Sonicwall NSA 2600, more features too. When you hold the device it feels like a prop, its nearly empty since Mikrotik designs their equipment around CPU-based routing over dedicated hardware. It allows for the feature-set to be upgraded over time, increases reliability, and massively reduces cost. Though its not uncommon for a switch to fail... and its not impossible for a CPU to fail, when is the last time youve see a mid-range (non-server) CPU actually just completely die? Probably pretty rare. We have a few Mikrotik routers with over 3 years uptime, just cranking along without issues. Another benefit -- everything is unlocked, no insane licensing fees like with Cisco gear! 50+ L2TP VPN users -- no problem! MPLS, Wireless Hotspot through the CAPsMAN Wireless Manager, Layer7 filtering. Mikrotik gives you all of the bells and whistles to work with, but no hand-holding -- you need to be familiar with network concepts and spend some time following their wiki. Mikrotik equipment is targeted at Wireless ISPs and networking professionals -- not for beginners to computers. Good luck, have fun, for $170 it cant hurt to buy one and play with it a bit. Once you see the feature set for yourself, youll likely be buying more of these.

I am very disappointed with the product I have received. The power adapter provided barely fits in the power plug on the back of the router and the device flickers on and off constantly as a result as it loses power due to lack of a secure connection. I had to Gorilla tape the thing in to keep it on. Secondly while trying to configure it it seemingly just dies. I lose ping connectivity to it and cant access the web-gui either. I have to hard reset and power cycle the device to access it again. Thirdly the device was cosmetically damaged when I received it. There is a thin plastic coating over the face of it, and near the LED indicators it was broken/cracked. I was very excited for this device as it appeared to have all the capability I need for a project I am working on including VLANs, VPNs, etc. What I received was a damaged, malfunctioning, poorly constructed device. I was very hopeful given the great reviews for these products in general from MikroTik on Amazon.

There is only one reason this gets 3 stars instead of 5. Its the total P.O.S. power supply connector. Unfortunately this thing doesnt have an internal p/s, it uses an external wall wart. The circular DC power connector on my unit is poorly soldered / connected to the PCB. So if you bump or wiggle the connector on the back of the box, the unit will reset (power failure). So its possible I got the only bad unit, but I dont dare return it for another because Im afraid the replacement will have the exact same problem. Would I pay an extra $20 for Mikrotik to put a real p/s internal to the unit? Absolutely. Mikrotik, if youre reading this, PLEASE stop using these external wall warts. I cant imagine anyone wanting to deal with wall warts in a rack environment. The same goes for your switches as well. So if I had to do it again, I would likely pay double for the ubiqiti competitor even though the price is double. The quality control here of the solder joints just arent reliable. Here comes the duct tape to hold the power connector stable.

You wont find another router with the functionality and performance at this price. I upgraded my home Internet access to 1000Mbs, but I wasnt seeing more than 200Mbs unless I connected directly to the modem. After installing & configuring this router / firewall / NTP server / caching DNS server, etc. I consistently see > 800Mbs. As other people have pointed out, it does have one design flaw. The power connection on the board is too far from the case to connect the power properly. I removed the routerboard, and used a 3/8 drill bit to make the case power opening larger & now the power seats properly. It works great (I dont recommend that you do this unless you know what youre doing. If YOU choose to risk turning your router into a brick dont blame me if thats what you do).

works like it should. typical mikrotik default router os.

The RB3011 is a new multi port device, our first to be running an ARM architecture CPU for higher performance than ever before. The RB3011 has ten Gigabit ports divided in two switch groups, an SFP cage and for the first time a SuperSpeed full size USB 3.0 port, for adding storage or an external 3G/4G modem. RB3011UiAS-RM Unit comes with 1U rackmount enclosure, a touchscreen LCD panel, a serial console port and PoE output functionality on the last Ethernet port.
