Pokémon Sun - Nintendo 3DS

Greater than one weekPokemon Sun gives a twist to the Pokemon series that was much needed. Theres enough familiarity for the 20 year fans to give us the nostalgia of traditional Pokemon games, but also enough of it is different to make it a fresh experience. Ive been playing Pokemon since Pokemon Yellow, and this game by far is one of the best in the series. Alola immerses you like the very first generations did, and I never felt like I wanted out of any particular area. All of the areas were enjoyable, and it never felt forced. The graphics are about the same as X and Ys, and Omega Rubys and Alpha Sapphires - but also has a bit of a style change on the menus. The characters are no longer in a chibi-like style, and are actually full-sized characters this time around. Controls are tighter and more responsive than previous games, and you feel like you have full control of your character. The music is also pretty diverse and has a wide range of likable OST. The performance issues that were in the past two installments have also carried over to this game (lag during battles), unfortunately. One of the main downfalls of the game is that its either too easy or too difficult. Its never an in between struggle. If you spend time leveling up your team, youll one hit everyones Pokemon. If you dont take the time to level your team up, youll struggle very badly against Pokemon the same level as you. This is a struggle that all of the newer games seem to have, and Im disappointed that it carries over to this game as well. Speaking of difficulty, the puzzles in the game werent challenging at all, if you can even call what they had puzzles. The Pokemon games puzzles have been lacking since the first few titles, and Im afraid that they were lacking even more so in puzzle difficulty than they were in X and Y. I found myself solving all of the puzzles on the first or second try, and never felt the need to think about them and plan them out like I have in the older games. Coming to the story however, the story was amazing. X and Ys story was lackluster and boring, but Sun and Moons story was a very much needed addition to the Pokemon franchise. I actually felt attached to the characters, and I will remember them vividly (which is more than what I can say for X and Ys characters), especially Hau, Lillie and Nebby, whom you travel with throughout the entirety of the game. Overall, I would give this game a 4/5 stars. The major flaws with this game in my opinion were the difficulty levels and the post-story once you beat the game. I would highly recommend this game to long-time Pokemon lovers, and to first time Pokemon players as well.

> 3 dayIve been a poke-fan since childhood. Ive looked forward to all the new GB-DS-3DS games over the years. This particular game, although awesome, leaves me saddened. There are no Pokemon Gyms! No League! The storyline seems like a combination of Pokemon Ranger & Yo-Kai Watch. Which isnt necessarily a bad thing, its just very different, more childish! Moves now have super effective, not effective, etc description on them, which dumbs it down a little, and it makes sense if theyre trying to reach a much younger audience (5-8 y.o). I know my 6 y.o loves that it tells him which moves work best! Not to mention the dramatic change in appearance in Pokemon like Rattata & Grimer! I do like the game, and will always be a Poké-Fan, I guess I just dont deal with change all too well :P!

> 3 dayThis isnt a bad game, but if you started playing in the 90s like I did then there might be some things youre not happy with. For starters, the game has really been dumbed down. While I understand the game is supposed to be marketed to kids, the amount of hand holding in this game is ridiculous. HMs? Nope. Youll just be given something thatll allow you to fly or surf without having to search for something special or even work for it at all. The island challenges arent very challenging, either. Your rival doesnt even seem like a rival and another challenge was taken away when he heals your Pokemon before every battle with him. Another thing I was disappointed in was how the game seems to focus more on other characters than it does you. You kind of seem like a side character a lot. Theres just a lot that made the older games fun and challenging that dont seem to be part of the game anymore; theres even a pretty big difference just from X And Y. Its still worth playing, but I wouldnt pay full price for it. Go find a used copy or borrow it from a friend. Hopefully, the next installment will be better.

> 3 dayI bought this for my wife because she is a huge Pokémon fan. She loves it! She is a veteran on the series (childhood game with Pokémon Blue/Red) but finds the improvements to be really nice. She likes the ability to tend your Pokémon after they battle to remove conditions and improve their happiness levels. Its a nice system :). She also points out its a great game to start getting into Pokémon. If you or the person you are thinking of buying this for hasnt played Pokémon before its a great time to get into the game. And if you are a veteran it is still great as always!

> 3 dayI was very disappointed with Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, but Im still a Pokémon fan so I HAD to order this game. Im happy to say the bad taste went away completely! I feel really excited when I play this game, discovering new Pokémon and forms! The story is interesting and the characters are all likeable so far. The new mechanics are great and well implemented. I LOVE to ride Tauros, I thought I was gonna miss my bike but hell no! Also the trials are entertaining, I dont miss gym leaders at all. One in particular made me laugh a lot. Also you get to see Pokédex descriptions everytime you get a new Pokémon, either from capturing, evolving or trading, which is great. Some of the descriptions are pretty cool or even creepy! I only wish we had Pokémon Bank already, my dear friends from previous games are waiting for me there. If youre a Pokémon fan, youll LOVE this game!

> 3 dayIf you love Pokemon you have to get this. I havent beaten it yet but this one sure does knock it out of the park. The cut-scenes alone are enough to sell the game The whole world is lively and full of Pokemon to interact with. Not only that you can ride Pokemon all over the towns and maps! Theres a lot to be excited about this game especially now that everything is build from the ground up on this one. No more mini characters and full sized characters that was really bothering me the last games. If you love Pokemon you will definitely love this one, Its the same game we knew to grow and love 20+ years ago!

> 3 dayDespite the game introduced many improvements to a pokemon game, such as removing HMs, having more narrative oriented first playthrough, balance patches, and graphical improvements, I found the game a bit disappointing for following reasons. First, the volume of the game was bit small. For XY, this was acceptable as it was the first 3D game for Pokemon and the developers had to create new 3D models for 720 pokemons. However, Sun/Moon reuses the same 3D models of XY but still has very small volume. Gamefreak only added a handful of new pokemons and the second playthrough was not very intriguing as it was just catching Ultrabeasts. Second, the narrative oriented play, which seemed pretty nice at first, became painful when you replayed the game. You cannot skip what you have already saw before. Especially, at the end of the first playthrough, you have to go through about 30 minutes long, un-skippable in-game cinematics. There really isnt much to engage with, but you just hit A button to go through all the dialogues. Third, the balance patch was pretty incomplete. It solved few problems but left a lot more problems untouched, such as Garchomps strength in the meta game. And gamefreak just avoided balancing or adding you mega evolution by restricting the types of megastones you can get from the Sun/Moon. This almost felt like having the 10-20% of content cut. I really hope gamefreak rather patch the balance more frequently as they could send out patches through nintendo e shop. The meta is already stale and I think the pokebank will not change much as the untouched overused pokemons are just coming into 7th gen, gutting all the 7th gen pokemon except for a few. The game should had presented more contents and better balance.
