I ordered this storage device in the hopes of being able to take all my music and video files from my Windows PC and be able to use them on my Chromebook. The drive WILL work on either, however it WILL NOT enable you to use the files on both a Windows PC and a Chromebook. I cant fault the descriptions on the site. The information was there, I just didnt read it carefully enough before ordering. Heres something else I learned: You wont be able to use the password protection on the device with a Chromebook. Apparently, that is something to expect down the line as I learned with subsequent research. Still, I dont regret getting this drive. The password protection program is a very good one. I now have two of these drives for my Windows PC and I have no regrets. And as for using this drive with the Chromebook, it will work. You MUST reformat the drive with your Chromebook (or a MAC, from what I can see) so it will accept the Chromebook operating system. Then you can use it to play your music or view your video. If you were hoping to use it for any financial or other sensitive information, well you cant use the password function at this time. My solution to this was to continue using a separate storage device for my Chromebook to keep all my video and music files. I just dont put any sensitive information (suck as tax files or other financial records) on this drive because it has no password protection. On my Windows PC, I have full functionality and all my files are on them and I have the drive password protected. And now, I have two storage drives. They are both Western Digital - a company that I trust with a solid reputation. I just use a different storage drive for the Chromebook and I dont have any financial or other sensitive files on it. For now, this is a good solution and Im happy with my purchase. My hope is down the line I will be able to use the Chromebook with a Western Digital drive AND have the password protection enabled. I consider it a minor inconvenience.

I bought this bc i have a couple laptops that have photos/ videos/ projects of mine that i wanted to unload off of there. Few reasons: laptops are older and i need to factory reset them, i want to sell these devices after they are all cleaned off, i also want all of my memories in one location. But i guess i didn’t do enough research on hard drives because i didn’t know that they were only comparable with certain programs, which is really really inconvenient. The laptops i have have older windows programs on them, which the hard drive is not cooperating with. I bought this and still have yet to use it. So I’m really salty(disappointed). It also has to be “reformatted” (whatever that means) to be compatible and operate with Apple devices. I wish i knew all of this before buying but i don’t want to return it- in case there’s actually a way i can use it and just don’t know how yet. So if anyone has any answers, tips, or suggestions on how to fix this issue, please comment or contact me. I’ll REALLY appreciate it.

As the title says, used for my PS4 (and had to give up a precious USB port). It was super simple to use, plug in, let PS4 format and boom you are set. It seems to have NO problem running with the console, and I see no delay in it pulling info, or writing info onto it. The black color and slight pattern makes it look almost like a mini PS which I find cute (yah I am a nerd like that). Totally recommend for someone needing more console space that doenst want to open their unit and just wants an add on.

The drive itself may be OK but installation is a problem. Since the purchase provides software/installation help free of charge for 30 days, I call the help phone line. With verbal instructions, I was able to install. The difference was that when I first went to the service site and downloads, it asked for the SN or Model number and I clicked Ok. It downloaded some software and installed but, when I tried to back up my system it would not work. The verbal info I received was to go to the site but dont type in the SN as requested. Just go down and select downloads then software. That way you get the latest software version. Ok so that was done. It then did seem to work and I backed up my complete computer. Then my computer was repaired (video problem - lap top) which required a new motherboard and clean installation of Windows 7 then update to Windows 10. All that worked fine. So then I went back to the WD web site and followed the latest instructions previously given. It installed the WD drive and I could see on the drive that there was a file indicating the initial backup. So, I told it to restore my computer. It started and said it was backing up. Well, about 1.5 hours later it quit and I rebooted the computer. The computer was not restored. I saw the file still on the WD drive so again I call the telephone number. Well that guy, I allowed him to control my computer and he deleted my previous download and did the download and install (just exactly how I had done it previously. It would not restore the computer. He then said the problem was that I had to do a backup before it would restore. So he did a backup. We then saw both files on the WD drive. So, then he started the restore of my original backup (the one before the computer repair). It started to work and said it was restoring. The technician got off the phone as he said it would take a while but when it finished the computer would have rebooted several times (maybe) but in the end I would reboot and the computer would be restored. Well, I let it alone and about 2 hours and it did as he said but when it stopped running the destop was void oa anything. It was blank and I could do nothing to cause anything to happen. So, I pulled out the external power supply cable and removed the battery and let it set. About 30 minutes later I installed the battery and external power and started the boot up. It was strange but it finally came up but the desktop was blank as before and nothing worked at all. So I repeated the power supply and battery thing and then I called Dell (my computer is a Dell with service contract. He saw the problem and said I had to start all over. We uninstalled the WD drive and booted from the Win 7 disk then updated to Win 10. I then went to WD and did the download of the program to make the WD drive work. It worked and installed but now when I went to look at files on the WD drive, it was blank. No files. So I contacted WD again and then said yes, something went wrong and I lost all my data and there was nothing that would be done. I will make it a point to never buy another item from WD. I really dont know if the problem was the WD drive itself or the software or the technician that tried to help me but the bottom line is that I have now lost everything, most of which can never be regenerated. I will try to return the drive and get my money back but likely that will not happen as the total fiasco that happened to a month and I am sure I am now out of time. I would advise again buying from WD.

    Greater than one week

This is my first external USB portable drive and I do like it quite a bit. Its small, sleek, and very quiet. I dont even notice when the drive is active. The included USB cable is rather short so I purchased a 3 ft cable to give me more flexibility in terms of how I connect the drive and place it relative to my desktop. I reformatted the drive, effectively wiping out the included software, which I didnt really want or need. The drive activity light is on the same end as the USB connection, which seems backwards to me. It makes more sense to me to put the light on the opposite end. The only issue I had was upon initial installation of the drivers. The Western Digital SES Driver failed to install on Windows 7. Fortunately, a legacy driver is available for download from WDs web site. The driver is not required in order to use the drive, but if you dont install it youll always get a driver failure when you login. I did reinstall Windows 7 for various unrelated reasons and the SES Driver did install successfully after a clean Windows reinstall. So, I image if your Windows is clean and fully up to date you may not have any issues installing the SES Driver. Overall I think its a great drive. Im withholding one star though, because of the short cable and the issue installing the SES Driver.

This portable HDD drive worked exactly as we needed it to. Great for backing up a computer or transferring files. I bought a new computer and needed to transfer all my photos and documents from the old to the new, and this served the purpose perfectly. It will also be used to keep another computer backed up. Happy with it stationary storage, but I will be getting an SSD for portable storage because it is more durable and can handle being dropped better than this HDD drive will be able to. An SSD is also three times the cost for the same size, so this old-school drive, though slower, was worth it. And it wasnt slow, per se. I didnt feel like I was waiting around forever for it to finish. Just slower than an SSD would be.

Used this little guy to upgrade the storage on my ps4 slim. The days of juggling which games were downloaded are a thing of the past! It was really easy to set up, and after a couple weeks of heavy use, it’s shown no delays or any form of hiccup. I’ll update this if it fails randomly, but so far this has been one of my best purchases in a while. No regerts.

I cant answer any questions on tech support because Ive never needed it. This is the third WD passport external drive Ive purchased in the past few years and the best in storage capacity. All our drives work on a daily basis and weve never had an issue. These drives are connected to an old Windows XP system and Windows 7 professional desktop computers.

I bought this back in 2018 didnt even use but maybe a couple of times - it sat around for years and then thought yeah Im going to move all my vids and pics to it. Well it doesnt work. It will not initialize, computer doesnt recognize it. Do a search on the web for My Passport has fatal error - there is no help other then to say try a different computer of coarse by a new cable did that and some other check disk stuff, no way around it. There is no way out of this error. Wasted Money.

Designed to fit in the palm of your hand, there’s plenty of space to store a massive amount of photos, videos, music and documents. Perfectly paired with WD Backup software and password protection, the My Passport drive helps keep your files safe.
