> 3 dayWorks just how youd want it to! Be careful not to accidentally reformat and lose all your stuff! I did because I was trying to use it to take data off my phone, which it did not work for, and ended up erasing all the data on the hard drive. Totally my fault and it was fine because I had the data elsewhere so no loss.

> 3 dayI ordered this storage device in the hopes of being able to take all my music and video files from my Windows PC and be able to use them on my Chromebook. The drive WILL work on either, however it WILL NOT enable you to use the files on both a Windows PC and a Chromebook. I cant fault the descriptions on the site. The information was there, I just didnt read it carefully enough before ordering. Heres something else I learned: You wont be able to use the password protection on the device with a Chromebook. Apparently, that is something to expect down the line as I learned with subsequent research. Still, I dont regret getting this drive. The password protection program is a very good one. I now have two of these drives for my Windows PC and I have no regrets. And as for using this drive with the Chromebook, it will work. You MUST reformat the drive with your Chromebook (or a MAC, from what I can see) so it will accept the Chromebook operating system. Then you can use it to play your music or view your video. If you were hoping to use it for any financial or other sensitive information, well you cant use the password function at this time. My solution to this was to continue using a separate storage device for my Chromebook to keep all my video and music files. I just dont put any sensitive information (suck as tax files or other financial records) on this drive because it has no password protection. On my Windows PC, I have full functionality and all my files are on them and I have the drive password protected. And now, I have two storage drives. They are both Western Digital - a company that I trust with a solid reputation. I just use a different storage drive for the Chromebook and I dont have any financial or other sensitive files on it. For now, this is a good solution and Im happy with my purchase. My hope is down the line I will be able to use the Chromebook with a Western Digital drive AND have the password protection enabled. I consider it a minor inconvenience.

Greater than one weekAn external HDD is most valuable as a backup device. You can backup your data to a device that can be removed and stored in a safe location. I bought this drive for just that reason and because it came with the WD Backup software needed to schedule and create routine incremental backups. The problem I encountered with the drive was that no matter what I did, the WD Backup software refused to recognize the Passport drive as a backup target. I installed, uninstalled, reinstalled and repeated for the better part of a full day with no tangible results. I also spent more than two hours on the phone with two different Level 2 WD techs to no avail. My system is a very straight forward Windows 10 (64bit) HP, so there should have been no problem installing WD Backup. I could add, change or delete any or all the files on the Passport; My computer had no problem recognizing the presence of the WD Passport HDD; The drive passed every test thrown at it, but WD Backup absolutely refused to see it as a backup target. Your mileage may vary, but I spent a lot of time (most of a full day, all told) and accomplished nothing.

> 3 dayThe first I bought this I thought it was strange how it beeps when it’s plugged into my computer and plus it was broken but I was able to return it and get a brand new one. Changed it to exfat and everything and it works perfectly fine so far. The only thing I didn’t like is how easily the plastic on the top half is very easy to scratch. Other than that it works perfectly.

> 3 dayWorks great with my xbox, super easy to hook up. Worst case scenario, there are a bunch of YouTube videos that can tell you what to do. My only issue is that it has a blinking light on it, and since my xbox is in my room it was quite annoying. Nothing a little opaque tape cant fix, though. Very compact, doesnt take up much space.

> 3 dayLet me start by saying that I was ready return this hd (or chuck it against the wall) after multiple unsuccessful amateur troubleshooting and reformatting attempts. Im running MacOS High Sierra 10.13, which is not included on the WD support page. Their instructions sound simple - open Disk Utility, erase, reformat in exFat. If your computer is like mine, it gives you an error message when you attempt to erase and reformat. Thats when I was ready to whip it against the wall and call it a day. Reluctantly, I decided to call WD tech support. I spoke to a very nice man from another country who was able to help. **To reformat for MacOS High Sierra 10.13** -Go to support.wdc.com, then scroll down to Software for Mac and click WD Drive Utilities for Mac to download. -Once all is downloaded, open WD Drive Utilities. -Make sure your hd is plugged in, then select it at the top of the page (mine shows an image of My Passport Ultra). -Click Drive Erase, make sure Format is HFS+J, select the check box, then Erase Drive. -Your hd should now show up on your desktop ready for files to drop. Now that its reformatted, its working as expected. (Photo note: slightest bit of oil on your hands will change the color of your hd...)

> 3 dayCalled tech support and they said that I could have faulty drive and that my warranty had expired. All I can suggest is to try using it right away to ensure you have one that is not defective. WD did come back and said they would send a replacement. Good on them for being customer service forward. Impressed.

Greater than one weekI managed to accomplish my main task, copying a lot of photos from Dropbox. Not really sure how I did it. Product is not intuitive. There was no progress screen. Didnt know it was working until it told me it was finished. The instructions on the web site are totally mysterious, made no sense to me. It refused to work at all until after I registered it--kept cycling the log in screen. I would like to use it to copy some things from my hard drive, but will have to devote several hours to trying to figure out how.

> 3 dayI was amazed that you can get a 1TB hard drive for this price! Western Digital has a good reputation and the hard drive is nice, small and light. Other than downloading some software from the WD web site, there was nothing to install it--just plug it into your PCs USB port. It came in just a few days--without me using any premium shipping. Im very satisfied!!

> 3 dayI thought itd be a little bigger but thats fine. It looks nice and I bought an Amazon Basics case to keep it protected. It fits well and the cord can be stored with it. I bought a 1TB model and its holding all of my family pictures, homeschool folders and some other files Id like to keep safe. I lost a lot on my old laptop so I feel better now having this as a backup.
