06-06-2025I was at first hesitant about buying an external HDD because there were so many to choose from but Im glad that I chose WD. Although there is a lot of accompanied software with the HDD most of it is beneficial and I would rather have that then no assistive software. SPEED: Im not using a stop watch and clocking how fast exactly file transfers take but lets just say its within a tolerable range of time depending on how large of a transfer you are doing. When I first got this I set up a backup of my most important documents and would say after about 30 minutes I had a large part of my computer backed up without issue. USER FRIENDLINESS: The included softwares really help you to get control over your data. Although some may not find use for them I like the fact that WD includes management softwares. All in all this was a great purchase for the price and I can rest well knowing that my past 6 years of computer data is safe and sound!

> 3 dayThere is no reason to not be backing up your data, and there is no reason to not be using the WD My Passport Ultra to do so. Not only is it incredibly simple to use, but it is slick and beautiful as well (especially the new white model). No matter what size you need, they have you covered and have kept the prices as affordable as you will see for such a fantastic item. My favorite feature(s) have to be the data encryption, and the fact that it is so easily portable. Both of those are selling points to me, and they nailed them. My experience: Packaged well and without excess wasted materials. I had to set it up differently to work on my MacBook Pro, than someone with a PC, but it was painless and I was up and running in 10 minutes or less. The drive has worked flawlessly and has brought peace of mind back once again after not having a functioning external hard drive for far too long. Looks great, works perfectly, keeps your data secure, and is easily portable. 5/5 Stars and highly recommended!

Greater than one weekGood drive, reasonably fast (if plugged into a USB 3.0 port). Ive been using TrueCrypt to encrypt my portable drives so far, and I wanted to try the WD Ultra because of its hardware encryption. From a quick research Ive done (before ordering the drive), its not 100% bulletproof and some university researchers found a few security holes and exploits. But unless youre protecting something from the NSA, its good enough. When you enable the hardware encryption enabled, the drive will show up as a CD in Windows when you plug it in. On that (virtual) CD, there is an executable which will prompt you for the password and will unlock the actual drive (which shows up as an additional drive in Windows). Its an easy process, does not require any third-party software, all in all it does what its supposed to do.

> 3 dayI have used Western Digital products for several decades. Generally speaking, they are reliable (absolutely essential for this application) and fulfill my requirements perfectly. Most human beings, but especially Americans, are hoarders, whether they will admit it or not. In the case of storage devices for computers, software, movies, photographs, and files we seem to never have enough available storage capacity available. This product should provide a permanent solution for most of us, but only a temporary solution for others. In my situation I have a 16 TB Network Attached Storage (NAS) device that required a firmware upgrade that would delete all of the existing files. This product was purchased to provide a pre-upgrade storage location for my important files. After the upgrade was completed I planned to move all of my files back on to the NAS device. This strategy and plan worked perfectly for me. Now that the upgrade has been completed, I am continuing to use this product as a secondary or tertiary storage device for my tax practice. Almost all of my tax return documents and files cannot be replaced. I recommend that you read the User Manual for this product before you install it, and also use the WD Utility software that is included. I do not use all of the utility and functionality features and functions. I believe that the utility can be used to shut this product down before it is moved. This external storage drive is portable, but should not be moved while power is on and the device has not been properly shut down.

Greater than one weekI am not a person who knows a lot about computers so I cant tell you about the technical side of this. I bought it because I know my computer is old and is going and I dont want to loose all my pictures and other files when it does. This is my first time using one of these and I find it very easy to use from the day I received it. It comes with the USB cord so I had nothing extra I had to buy. I can now keep a copy of my files (adding the new ones periodically) in a safe spot and access them from another computer if I had to without bothering my children to come over to do it. I had no problems with it (no errors) and love the peace of mind that even when the computer stops working, I still have all my things.

> 3 dayUsing this as a photo drive for my old MacBook Pro. The drive itself has worked reliably and it is exactly what I was looking for. I did have some issues using the WD software that came with the drive. When using the software the drive often wouldnt stay mounted. It would either disconnected after about a minute or refuse to be recognized. Removing the software seems to have solved the problem. I did not investigate further because I decided to just use the drive without the WD tools installed, which is what I normally do anyway.

Greater than one weekI bought this external 1TB HDD (Hard Drive Disk) on 2016 for having a backup of every type of file in my laptop and smartphone, everything from photos, videos, movies, music, documents, basically everything. Its 2018 and I still use it, although almost full, I carry this everywhere, and it still hasnt given any indications of giving up. Although there are things like Google Drive and Dropbox, I also keep a physical copy of everything in the cloud and in this HDD, so if anything were to fail, I would not lose anything at all. In all, Im very pleased with the performance of this HDD, and I truly recommend the brand to everyone.

Greater than one weekI helped a friend set up a new computer and again when she acquired a malware infection. She had one of these little Passport drives. I liked it so much, got one of my own. White version, 1TB. Ive been using it about 8 months now, still love it. For me, it has a whole bunch of pluses: Western Digital has always been my choice for external backup hard drives. Good rep. 1TB is more than I need to backup my tons of photos, recipes, email, tax returns, and other important records on my laptop PC. The small physical size is a HUGE plus. It has 4 very tiny rubbery feet which help it stay put. Uses only ONE cord - USB. It does NOT require an electric outlet. Yaaaa. I used to use one of the standard large external drives, also WD, but it took up too much precious space, got knocked over a lot, and required an electric outlet, which are in short supply in my computer area. (Landline phone, modem, router, tv, printer, smartphone charger, charging laptop etc.) I plugged it into a USB port and let it sit on my 17 laptop - lower left corner. Thats it. Fits perfectly and so small it doesnt interfere with using the keyboard. This works for me because I dont have a desk. I move the laptop from the table next to my chair to my lap frequently. After all, it is a LAPtop, not a desktop or table top PC. <grin> My Passport moves with my laptop. I have a 17 monitor/keyboard area, so there is room for it. Not sure if it would fit in the same spot with a smaller laptop. If you use your laptop at a desk, or just plug in the Passport once a day to do backup, not a problem. I just prefer keeping it connected all the time. I prefer a mouse over the touch pad, but this is small enough that keeping it on the left side of my laptop does not cover the touch pad, should I need to use it. I use a third party software which checks for changes hourly and backs up any I made. So far, have not needed to use it for restore purposes, but sooner or later, hard drives fail. I have no doubt it will save the day when that happens. However, even external hard drives fail, so to be safe, I also have a cloud backup just in case. Cant be too careful.

> 3 dayI own probably 20+ WD 2TB Passport USB 3.0 drives, of different models and colors, purchased over the past few years. I use these to store Disaster Recovery Image backups, both for myself and my clients. In general, I LOVE the drives and recommend them to every client that I work with. However, the two fuscia colored My Passport Ultra drives that I recently purchased, for one of my clients, are REAL DOGS! I often use Clonezilla to boot off a thumb drive and then use these USB Passports as the Image Repository, Ive been doing it for years without any problems. These two drives are such POWER HOGS that the LIVE Clonezilla OS cant even DETECT the drives when plugged into the desktops USB ports. Ive tested them on a number of different computers, using every available USB port (I understand that the rear USB ports often get more power, Ive tried them ALL!) Ive tried giving the drives longer for the OS to DETECT them, rebooting the OS repeatedly, everything that I can think of, and with the exception of only a couple of occasions, they have FAILED to be detected by the computer. (I then have plugged in an older version of the black WD 2TB Ultra drives and it works every time without the slightest delay.) Ive also noticed that the POWER LIGHT is very dim on these two FUSCIA drives, as comparred to my older black (blue, gray, silver, metal, and plastic) drives, of all sorts. After I boot into Windows, my computers can USUALLY detect these drives, but the power lights are still dimmer than others and dont appear to be nearly as quick and responsive. I dont know if I just got a couple of DUDS, or if the NEWER VERSION drives require MORE POWER than the older drives did. (I dont know if this has to do with the hardware encryption capabilities of these drives - which I never use, or really what is causing this problem.) I did notice on Amazon how some of the OLDER MODEL WD 2TB USB3 drives are actually selling for MORE MONEY (and are harder to find) than the newer VERSIONS of these drives, which I found ODD. I wonder if this is the reason WHY? Had I only purchased one of these drives, I would assume that it may be a fluke, but with TWO brand new identical drives performing poorly in exactly the same ways, Im less hopeful that I simply got a faulty product. Ill certainly call WD and see what they say. Either way, with over 1TB of data already on one of these drives (I had to use an OLD drive as an intermediary, but needed somewhere to transfer my clients images), it has been and will continue to be a PAIN to work with these drives, even if these drives are replaced and I need to migrate the data back off of them and verify the integrity of my images. Its all just a headache that I really dont need right now. For the foreseeable future, I believe that I will need to PAY MORE and wait longer to purchase the OLDER VERSIONS of this drive. This one just isnt cutting it! I know that these drives have historically been WONDERFUL, but buyers BEWARE, theres a NEW VERSION possibly looking to ruin your day! I hope that your experience is better than mine! (I would be interested in hearing from anyone with a SIMILAR experience with these drives, not promoting other products, but simply in regards to the VERSIONS of this particular product.) Thanks!
