04-06-2025As a giant nerd, hard drives of all shapes and sizes and capacities are very important to me. Ive used many drives in the past and all of my Western Digitals seem to last longer than competitors and outperform all expectations. More specifically to this drive. Going on the road for three months I needed a drive that I could trust for all of my sensitive data, as well as various movies and entertainment. The Western Digital Passport was perfect for this. Not only did it have the capacity to store my >TB movie/TV Collection, It also had the resilience to survive a literal cross country trip. This drive bounced around in my bag on buses, airplanes, cars and sometimes just in my back pocket for a solid three months and is still alive and perfectly functional to tell the tale today. The USB 3.0 speeds are pretty awesome as well! The size is perfect. Capacity is great. As always, another great product from WD!

> 3 dayWorks like a charm, (now)... The only problem i see is that these new hard drives come formatted as GPT (GUID) and not MBR and thats a problem when you perform a backup to this drive and then try and restore (you cant) at least when using Acronis backup software... These drives are pre-formatted to work with newer versions of Windows like Windows 10 NOT Windows 7 like Im using. I use Acronis backup software, when you try and create a backup you get a warning message that tells you that if you create this backup you will not be able to perform a restore because the destination disk was created using GPT (GUID) and not MBR. This is easily corrected by first moving the contents of the external drive (if you wish to keep them) to your internal hard drive then open Computer Management then select Disk Management and Right Click on this external drive and convert it to MBR then move the files back to the drive when your done and your ready to go.

> 3 daySo far so good! I got up to a max speed of 108mb/s transferring from a Seagate 6tb to this little drive. My other barracuda Sata 7200rpm drives gave me about 30mb/s, same for USB2.0 WD-MyBooks; while transferring large videos to this drive. Been hooking this device up to my mx2-gbox & using Kodi to view all the files, music & videos on the passport, Videos played in Kodi have been playing smoothly and seeking doesnt cause any hiccups; it gets power from the mx2 usb port, which is great, this way i dont need to leave my PC on all night to stream from. This has to be saving me tons of money in electric, with the PC off all night. Ive only had this little gem for about a week but, Im feeling good about it. I bought a nifty little case for it that protects it very well, Id recommend it.

Greater than one weekIm using this drive as a offsite backup, and it works fine. I am also using it with a Mac, which requires a re-format. That is very easy to do using the Disk Utility built into OSX--but it takes a while. Im not willing to pay more for the same drive in a Mac version. I now have three WD backup drives, and they all look the same except that this one is blue. The colors are more than a fashion statement; they let you identify drives used for different purposes at a glance. I AM willing to pay a little more for Western Digital over drives from other brands. They have proven more reliable for me over the years. Its much too soon to comment on the reliability of this one.

> 3 dayIve got several of these, and use them for backups and large data transfer tasks. So far, Ive never had one fail, and Ive been using them for a couple years. Its always possible to get a bad one with any electronic device, but my experience to date has been one of reliability. Watch the software though - it can be very useful if you want to arrange for scheduled backups, and I use it frequently with good results. However, one time on one PC I found the software was gobbling up all kinds of CPU cycles and making it impossible to do anything on that box. Uninstalling the software solved the issue (using the device itself afterwards was still fine), but if things get crunchy on your box, take a look at your services and processes and make sure the software isnt constantly trying to call home to mommy. This only occurred once, and on one PC (I have/maintain several), so it might have been an anomaly. Still good drives. Definitely recommend getting cases for them so they dont get all banged up. Protect your investment.

> 3 dayTerrible product and terrible tech support from Western Digital. I continue to get an error message that all my files have failed to back up. I called Western Digital about this and she told me to close all programs. That did not solve the problem. I still get the error messages and I get very sarcastic help from Western Digital. When i try to remove the hard drive I get a message that the program is still running or an error message that I cant connect sometimes both. I would really like to return the product but it has files that have backed up and so I cant really return it unless I take it to my IT people at a cost to wipe it. I am very unhappy with this. I have used 2 other companies back up drives but told WD was the best, not for me. My other two hard drives were never a problem. Also I use a remote back up and that stopped backing up files when the WD is connected, I never had the problem before with other hard drive. I assume its the software not the actual drive.Yesterday I spoke with their tech dept yet again and they gave me directions for wiping the hard drive. It said it would take 139 hours which I think is a bit long to put 0s on a hard drive to wipe out data. During the night there was an error message that I discovered when I awoke this morning so I clicked on continue. It continues to run at a snails pace, I called again and was told the hard drive had many bad sectors. This is hardly Amazons fault. WD is supposed to have excellent external back ups so something needs to be fixed in their quality control dept. The Passport hard drive is on its way back to Amazon.

> 3 dayI have had WD internal drives before and had pretty good luck with them and I needed an external drive and decided to give this one a go. I got the 1 TB version and am fairly pleased with it. The transfer rate is definitely fast and I like that it is powered by the USB port rather than needing a separate power adapter. The security features I do not use so I cannot speak of them. I marked it down simply because I somehow believed that this was a solid state drive when in fact it is not and I think that should be made clearer in the product description as that is what I really wanted. But, I will keep this one as it is pretty good for the price.

> 3 dayI signed up for Carbonite backup and chose an option to mirror my hard drive so when it crashed again (I went through it once, it is a piece of hard ware and probably will fail again) I wanted to be able to reinstall the entire contents of my hard drive rather than TRY to remember what I had on it and not have to spend 3 weeks trying to rebuild it. One of the things I had to have to do the mirroring was a portable hard drive. I spent a lot of time trying to find something that I could use, a friend recommended this drive, I bought it and it works just fine. I does act a little weird though but I unplug it and it goes back to normal again.

> 3 dayA really nice back-up drive! Easy to use, and I would have given 5 stars but for one thing. If you install the software on the drive, it doesnt have a feature for just moving certain files to the drive. Only back-up and restore. I dont want to back up my computer because Im switching and dont want all the files associated with it. But, it works flawlessly (so far) when I just move files to it. The price was there, quality is there, and delivered very quickly! I may get another one.
