> 3 dayI had the worst day when I bought this, I wasnt expecting Western Digital to neglect Apple computers this much. Heres what happen, upon the un-boxing and hook it up right away, I find out that it is not Mac enable at the start. I bought 3 Externals back in 2009, and Had no problem, just plug and go, on my Xbox 360, PS3, Mac, and PC. I decided to update once the TBs drop in price, and I saw this one in a good deal. I pour through the instructions for about 20 mins, until I decide to go there web site. The Web site gives me nothing on why my Mac 2011(Summer) would not read the device. Then I search google, I come across Mac World Magazine forums. Where they sent me on a round about click session to reformat the device. In addition, to not once but twice having to reformat it for Mac and PC, because it would not work on my PS4 the first time. After a 3 hour process, I can say, I may shop other external SSD/HDDs, What really makes me upset, is the Security system; by that, I mean, once a day when I turn my computer on in the morning it takes an extra minute to wake it self up because the security program locks up the whole process; asks for a password every time, even though I set it to remember my computer. What is more of an hassle is when my computer goes to sleep, I just eject it and leave it unplug most of the time until I really need it because it will say it can be open but I have to reconnect the whole device upon reawakening my computer. After that Minute wait to activate and use; it works like a great hard drive.

> 3 dayI bought two of these drives to replace my current storage and backup drives for Adobe Lightroom (Im a photography student). One of those drives I was replacing was a 1TB My Passport Ultra that Ive been super happy with, so I decided my new drives would just be larger versions! These drives are super easy to use, they operate very quietly and, in my experience, are very reliable. They run cool, as well, and the USB 3.0 is lightning fast. The only reason I needed to replace my 1TB version was because I was filling it up too quickly - Im going to use that one now as a backup drive for another computer. Word of advice, though - make sure you attach these to a powered USB port on your computer. When I initially connected these, I wasnt able to format them (I use a Mac, so had to reformat and partition them before use) or anything because they werent getting enough power. But once I connected them to a USB hub with an external power source, everything was just fine. The drives has been humming along nicely since, and my files are all safely in place!

> 3 dayI recently found myself faced with the dilemma of having to send my Xbox One in for repair, thankfully while still under warranty. The notion of loosing all my saved games or having to download them all again via the WWW was unpalatable to say the least. So I decided to move all the data I could from the Xbox before shipping it off to Microsoft to this HDD. Glad I did, because my Xbox came back set up as a brand new unit, even though the unit that came back was the same exact unit I sent in. Couldnt be happier with the space, speed and the drive in general. It is completely powered via the Xbox USB port so no need for an external power supply. The Xbox recognized the drive and I just had to format the drive for use with the Xbox before I could start storing data. Im very happy with it and and wouldnt hesitate to make the purchase again, plus I now have the added bonus of 2TB of storage, which I was having to delete things previously from the internal HDD to make room for new games.

Greater than one weekI am not a person who knows a lot about computers so I cant tell you about the technical side of this. I bought it because I know my computer is old and is going and I dont want to loose all my pictures and other files when it does. This is my first time using one of these and I find it very easy to use from the day I received it. It comes with the USB cord so I had nothing extra I had to buy. I can now keep a copy of my files (adding the new ones periodically) in a safe spot and access them from another computer if I had to without bothering my children to come over to do it. I had no problems with it (no errors) and love the peace of mind that even when the computer stops working, I still have all my things.

> 3 dayPretty good device...very fast. For some strange reason, I cannot perform a system image on my Windows 7 computer with it, which is why I bought it in the first place. (Yes, its formatted properly). What I dont like is that it doesnt seem to let you decide how often or manually (which is what I want) that you can do a back-up. It wants to set an automatic backup date regardless of what you want. Well, tough...its just a laptop; were not going to be plugged in all the time, are we? Why does everyone make stuff with predetermined controls? You can just unplug it, but Im sure in time, that wont be good for it.

Greater than one weekGood: The bundled software offers a great amount of customization, security, and stability options, though it has its downfalls. The USB 3.0 is fast, and is also backward compatible with USB 2.0. It is small enough that it fits in my blazer pocket. Stylish design. Bad: The backup software wont allow me to select and de-select only the folders I want to back up; as a result, Windows 7 Backup and Recovery is vastly superior. The included USB 3.0 cable is way too short. The activity light is where the USB port is, so it is difficult to keep it facing me. Its a great value for the price and is well worth the purchase. The software has its ups and downs, but, all in all, it adds to the value.

Greater than one weekBeing somewhat a luddite, I had to hack my way through this to include latest utilities and backup program from Western Digital and install them. Then I reformatted the drive to a simple volume to insure it would work on my Windows 7 machine. Maybe unnecessary but I wanted to play with it some having never used one before. I also added a fuschia grip and Lacdo Waterproof Hard EVA Shockproof case. I do hope not to test the waterproofness or the shock sensitivity. The manual does caution about moving it about while in use The utilities and backup program are without frills and pretty straightforward so its hard to screw it up. It even has blinky lights so you can tell when its doing something. Im using this as backup for two small 128 Gb solid state drives so there is plenty of room on it. I did manage to do a drive backup and system image for both computers so I am somewhat relieved at getting that done. I had lost everything when my old XP machine died a horrible thrashing death with no backup. Lesson learned and I invested in this thingy which Im well pleased with so far. Its added peace of mind. So if youre somewhat challenged computer wise yet feel confident enough to learn, I recommend this highly. Its easy to set up and use and something that everyone should do... backup your stuff and rest easier.

> 3 dayTypical Western Digital quality, works great. Its been a while since I bought one and dont know if theyre all like this, but I finally realized it will only work using the USB 3.0 cord it comes with. I originally just tossed the wider USB 3.0 cord it came with in my camera bag and tried to use it on my Windows 10 desktop using a standard USB cable. The light on the unit just blinked and my computer didnt see it. I figured it was a Win10 compatibility issue and tried it on my Win7 netbook, again no-go. Was about to send it back until I realized the cord it came with was wider. It works fine with the right cord. I just assumed it would be backwards compatible with USB 2.0 but I guess not. Not an issue, Ill just keep the cord with it.

06-06-2025Its not often that you find diminutive 1TB drives that are silent in their operation, dont overheat, are well priced and are plug n play with both Windows and Mac computers. Thats what makes the WD My Passport Ultra such a good buy! I have two of them - one connected to a Mac Mini for Time Machine automatic backups, and another on a Windows 10 PC for music storage. I paid about fifty-five for each drive and would definitely buy more. The USB 3.0 interface is speedy and the included WD software: SmartWare Pro (additional cost) allows for backup directly to Dropbox or the device. I look for these drives during Amazons big sale days closer to the holiday season when Ive seen them for as low as thirty-nine dollars. Im very impressed with this product and will continue to use them for the reasons mentioned. They are one of those things that just work, which makes me happy!

> 3 dayTerrible product and terrible tech support from Western Digital. I continue to get an error message that all my files have failed to back up. I called Western Digital about this and she told me to close all programs. That did not solve the problem. I still get the error messages and I get very sarcastic help from Western Digital. When i try to remove the hard drive I get a message that the program is still running or an error message that I cant connect sometimes both. I would really like to return the product but it has files that have backed up and so I cant really return it unless I take it to my IT people at a cost to wipe it. I am very unhappy with this. I have used 2 other companies back up drives but told WD was the best, not for me. My other two hard drives were never a problem. Also I use a remote back up and that stopped backing up files when the WD is connected, I never had the problem before with other hard drive. I assume its the software not the actual drive.Yesterday I spoke with their tech dept yet again and they gave me directions for wiping the hard drive. It said it would take 139 hours which I think is a bit long to put 0s on a hard drive to wipe out data. During the night there was an error message that I discovered when I awoke this morning so I clicked on continue. It continues to run at a snails pace, I called again and was told the hard drive had many bad sectors. This is hardly Amazons fault. WD is supposed to have excellent external back ups so something needs to be fixed in their quality control dept. The Passport hard drive is on its way back to Amazon.
