Greater than one weekI have used Western Digital products for several decades. Generally speaking, they are reliable (absolutely essential for this application) and fulfill my requirements perfectly. Most human beings, but especially Americans, are hoarders, whether they will admit it or not. In the case of storage devices for computers, software, movies, photographs, and files we seem to never have enough available storage capacity available. This product should provide a permanent solution for most of us, but only a temporary solution for others. In my situation I have a 16 TB Network Attached Storage (NAS) device that required a firmware upgrade that would delete all of the existing files. This product was purchased to provide a pre-upgrade storage location for my important files. After the upgrade was completed I planned to move all of my files back on to the NAS device. This strategy and plan worked perfectly for me. Now that the upgrade has been completed, I am continuing to use this product as a secondary or tertiary storage device for my tax practice. Almost all of my tax return documents and files cannot be replaced. I recommend that you read the User Manual for this product before you install it, and also use the WD Utility software that is included. I do not use all of the utility and functionality features and functions. I believe that the utility can be used to shut this product down before it is moved. This external storage drive is portable, but should not be moved while power is on and the device has not been properly shut down.

> 3 dayI was at first hesitant about buying an external HDD because there were so many to choose from but Im glad that I chose WD. Although there is a lot of accompanied software with the HDD most of it is beneficial and I would rather have that then no assistive software. SPEED: Im not using a stop watch and clocking how fast exactly file transfers take but lets just say its within a tolerable range of time depending on how large of a transfer you are doing. When I first got this I set up a backup of my most important documents and would say after about 30 minutes I had a large part of my computer backed up without issue. USER FRIENDLINESS: The included softwares really help you to get control over your data. Although some may not find use for them I like the fact that WD includes management softwares. All in all this was a great purchase for the price and I can rest well knowing that my past 6 years of computer data is safe and sound!

> 3 dayGood: The bundled software offers a great amount of customization, security, and stability options, though it has its downfalls. The USB 3.0 is fast, and is also backward compatible with USB 2.0. It is small enough that it fits in my blazer pocket. Stylish design. Bad: The backup software wont allow me to select and de-select only the folders I want to back up; as a result, Windows 7 Backup and Recovery is vastly superior. The included USB 3.0 cable is way too short. The activity light is where the USB port is, so it is difficult to keep it facing me. Its a great value for the price and is well worth the purchase. The software has its ups and downs, but, all in all, it adds to the value.

> 3 dayA really nice back-up drive! Easy to use, and I would have given 5 stars but for one thing. If you install the software on the drive, it doesnt have a feature for just moving certain files to the drive. Only back-up and restore. I dont want to back up my computer because Im switching and dont want all the files associated with it. But, it works flawlessly (so far) when I just move files to it. The price was there, quality is there, and delivered very quickly! I may get another one.

Greater than one weekFairly pleasant with this external hard drive! I brought the 1TB Black version. I was in need of more space and this makes my life much easier. A very huge plus for this drive was that it was super easy to set up. In 5 minutes of connecting, I could already load up storage into the drive and put it in use! Also, the WD software that comes with this drive instillation is also very useful. Scanning for my drive for errors is very helpful so kudos to WD for making a software like this! The one thing that I didnt like was that sometimes when I want to safely remove the hard drive, it would say it would be in use and cannot be removed. Everything would be closed yet this error would still pop up. Because of this reason, I had to give this drive 4 stars instead of 5. I actually dont mind this error because I can simply just shut off my laptop and remove it, but it can sometimes be annoying. TLDR; PROS: Easy to set up, great WD software to protect and backup your drive. Highly recommended. CONS: Sometimes cannot safely remove hard drive, have to shut down laptop in order to.

> 3 dayI bought this some time in high school, probably sophomore year so around 8 years ago and this is still going strong. I took a lot of pictures and videos in high school and this was really good to store them on. I could keep it in my backpack or my jeans pockets size-wise. After 7 years with it, I had used it all I needed. My friends game with each other a lot and one needed more storage for his console so I gave him this and he said its made things so much quicker! He also says its never noticeable taking it with him because its so light and compact.

> 3 dayPros: Works with USB 2.0 and 3.0, which is what you would expect. But its hard to find that info here. So there you have it. Come pre-partitioned for NTFS, with loads of government spyware for windows. I wiped it out and partitioned for Ext4 to use it for Linux. Works when directly connected to my Raspberry Pi 2 Model B without a hub (once I modified /boot/config.txt and added max_usb_current=1). Cons: The only thing I can think of to complain about is the activity LED seems like it should be on the opposite end of the drive as the cable, but it isnt. Its also illuminated when there is no activity, but blinks off and on when there is activity. Its also quite bright when you look right at it, though it doesnt seem to illuminate a dark room in an annoying way. The LED is white. WD My Passport 1 TB vs WD Elements 1TB I had a hard time choosing between this WD My Passport and the

> 3 dayUPDATE: I called WD and they walked me through to get it working on my PC and my MAC. So far I like the product, but was a bit annoying that they called at different times than we agreed upon. It did not work on my PC with windows 10, nor did it let me reformat it to work on my mac. I followed all of their instructions online, and did a lot of research but nothing got it to work on either of my computers. I opened a case with Western Digital and they said they needed to call me to go over it. I told them when to call, but they ended up calling the day before while I was at work. I emailed back asking them to call me again another time, then never called even though they said they would. I have spent way too much time trying to get this product to work and it simply isnt worth it.

> 3 dayIm using this drive as a offsite backup, and it works fine. I am also using it with a Mac, which requires a re-format. That is very easy to do using the Disk Utility built into OSX--but it takes a while. Im not willing to pay more for the same drive in a Mac version. I now have three WD backup drives, and they all look the same except that this one is blue. The colors are more than a fashion statement; they let you identify drives used for different purposes at a glance. I AM willing to pay a little more for Western Digital over drives from other brands. They have proven more reliable for me over the years. Its much too soon to comment on the reliability of this one.

> 3 dayIve got several of these, and use them for backups and large data transfer tasks. So far, Ive never had one fail, and Ive been using them for a couple years. Its always possible to get a bad one with any electronic device, but my experience to date has been one of reliability. Watch the software though - it can be very useful if you want to arrange for scheduled backups, and I use it frequently with good results. However, one time on one PC I found the software was gobbling up all kinds of CPU cycles and making it impossible to do anything on that box. Uninstalling the software solved the issue (using the device itself afterwards was still fine), but if things get crunchy on your box, take a look at your services and processes and make sure the software isnt constantly trying to call home to mommy. This only occurred once, and on one PC (I have/maintain several), so it might have been an anomaly. Still good drives. Definitely recommend getting cases for them so they dont get all banged up. Protect your investment.
