> 3 dayGood: The bundled software offers a great amount of customization, security, and stability options, though it has its downfalls. The USB 3.0 is fast, and is also backward compatible with USB 2.0. It is small enough that it fits in my blazer pocket. Stylish design. Bad: The backup software wont allow me to select and de-select only the folders I want to back up; as a result, Windows 7 Backup and Recovery is vastly superior. The included USB 3.0 cable is way too short. The activity light is where the USB port is, so it is difficult to keep it facing me. Its a great value for the price and is well worth the purchase. The software has its ups and downs, but, all in all, it adds to the value.

> 3 dayI bought this 4 months ago as a back up drive because my iOmega drive is finally starting to fail after 5 years. This drive worked really well when I initially transferred about 150-200 gb of files to it the first day. After less than 10 uses, it can have trouble registering on any computer. When I plug it in, the drive whirrs and the light illuminates, but the computers simply dont see it. I end up unplugging and reinserting over and over until the computers are finally able to read it. Other days, it works fine and on the first try. And Im back on Amazon trying to find another drive that might be more reliable because its erratic functioning makes me worried that it will crash sooner than later. *UPDATE* After the first few weeks, it has been working much more consistently. Im still dont quite trust this drive after our rocky beginning, but its performance has been much improved over the last few months.

Greater than one weekI love it! Im now a fan of WD items! (Review of the WD 1TB Black My Passport Ultra) Upon purchasing this item, Ive had just an amazing experience with it. It arrived fast and on time, came nicely packaged in the box and was undamaged. It is simple to use, (plug and play) has extremely fast transfer rates, sturdy quality made product, and works perfectly! I love it! Pros: -shipped fast and on time -packaged nicely -delivered undamaged -works perfectly out of the box -super quite -extremely fast transfer rates -came pre-formatted -came with files on it already for programs to manage it -can be encrypted -small and compact -black and slim design -very sturdy -came with a manual -etc. etc. Cons: -absolutely NONE! I absolutely love this thing! If youre thinking about getting a external hard drive, get this one. You wont regret it. Im satisfied with my purchase and would definitely recommend!!!

> 3 dayI recently purchased this specifically for backing up my desktop and so far Im on the fence about it (thus 3 stars). The drive itself is nice but the software that comes with it is less than stellar. Pros (IMHO): * Its small, sleek, and has a nice design. * No problems connecting - Im running Windows 7 and my computer recognized it immediately. * It comes with its own converter cord (USB 2.0 to 3.0). * It has a ridiculous amount of space on the drive that I cant possibly fill up (which is a good thing). * Price seemed fair. Cons: * The backup software sucks. The program took forever to install and once installed it didnt come with any sort of instructions. I told it to start the backup and nothing happened. Tried a second time and still the same. I had to uninstall it and reinstall to get it to start working. Even then theres no way to actually know its DOING anything except by looking at the amount of space used on the drive or by going through and hand-checking the WD Backup folder (which is tedious). I MUCH prefer the Norton backup that shows green arrows on everything that has been backed up. * Its also ridiculously slow AND it slows down my computer. It took almost all day to complete the backup and while it was running I kept getting notifications about high CPU usage due to the drive. Ive never had a problem with my computer running slow - internet surfing, streaming, gaming - all fine. This little drive made my computer feel like it was wading through mud. Odd. Overall: I like the actual drive but I hate the backup software. I have no idea if the backup/restore actually works and I hate that I spent $59 on something that I have no confidence in. Im just crossing my fingers and hoping I never actually need the thing (knock on wood).

09-06-2025I had the worst day when I bought this, I wasnt expecting Western Digital to neglect Apple computers this much. Heres what happen, upon the un-boxing and hook it up right away, I find out that it is not Mac enable at the start. I bought 3 Externals back in 2009, and Had no problem, just plug and go, on my Xbox 360, PS3, Mac, and PC. I decided to update once the TBs drop in price, and I saw this one in a good deal. I pour through the instructions for about 20 mins, until I decide to go there web site. The Web site gives me nothing on why my Mac 2011(Summer) would not read the device. Then I search google, I come across Mac World Magazine forums. Where they sent me on a round about click session to reformat the device. In addition, to not once but twice having to reformat it for Mac and PC, because it would not work on my PS4 the first time. After a 3 hour process, I can say, I may shop other external SSD/HDDs, What really makes me upset, is the Security system; by that, I mean, once a day when I turn my computer on in the morning it takes an extra minute to wake it self up because the security program locks up the whole process; asks for a password every time, even though I set it to remember my computer. What is more of an hassle is when my computer goes to sleep, I just eject it and leave it unplug most of the time until I really need it because it will say it can be open but I have to reconnect the whole device upon reawakening my computer. After that Minute wait to activate and use; it works like a great hard drive.

Greater than one weekThis is the latest of several WD external hard drive I have owned. I would say their design has evolved to make this USB powered HDD a real gem - quiet and unobtrusive, and so far excellent performance (given that I am using the USB 3 drive on a USB 2 iMac). It was listed as an external drive for the Mac, but it came formatted for Windows. I understand this is typical, and it was relatively easy to reformat for the Mac, but it does strike me as a bit of misrepresentation. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this external HDD, with the proviso that youll have to reformat it to use it with a Mac.

> 3 dayPros: Works with USB 2.0 and 3.0, which is what you would expect. But its hard to find that info here. So there you have it. Come pre-partitioned for NTFS, with loads of government spyware for windows. I wiped it out and partitioned for Ext4 to use it for Linux. Works when directly connected to my Raspberry Pi 2 Model B without a hub (once I modified /boot/config.txt and added max_usb_current=1). Cons: The only thing I can think of to complain about is the activity LED seems like it should be on the opposite end of the drive as the cable, but it isnt. Its also illuminated when there is no activity, but blinks off and on when there is activity. Its also quite bright when you look right at it, though it doesnt seem to illuminate a dark room in an annoying way. The LED is white. WD My Passport 1 TB vs WD Elements 1TB I had a hard time choosing between this WD My Passport and the

> 3 dayWorks good so far. My reason for -1 star is I really wish this came with a small push button to turn it on/off (cut usb). This would save on having to yank a usb cable all the time and putting it back in if you dont want the drive always running or on. The drive itself seems fine, I think, I hope. However the cable they provided is flakey as all heck. The standard end (the one that plugs into your computer) is extremely touchy. If the cord or the plug housing itself is bumped... the drive acts like it was ejected. This is pretty annoying with a laptop given the close proximity to the keyboard this plugs into. Its not the computer port, because I tried it in all three ports! And since the cable for this WD Passport is not-standard, I cannot just use any other cable I have that I know fits snug and proper. * Updated * I talked with WD support, and they were gracious to send me a new cable free of charge to fix the issue. And it worked out, and works great now, without jiggle-risk. WD has always had great customer support.

> 3 dayUPDATE: I called WD and they walked me through to get it working on my PC and my MAC. So far I like the product, but was a bit annoying that they called at different times than we agreed upon. It did not work on my PC with windows 10, nor did it let me reformat it to work on my mac. I followed all of their instructions online, and did a lot of research but nothing got it to work on either of my computers. I opened a case with Western Digital and they said they needed to call me to go over it. I told them when to call, but they ended up calling the day before while I was at work. I emailed back asking them to call me again another time, then never called even though they said they would. I have spent way too much time trying to get this product to work and it simply isnt worth it.
