Im updating the rating on this from one to three stars after some kind members offered me help on getting it to work with my Mac Still not an easy task but it is possible and even easy if you havent yet stored a lot on the drive. However if you have a lot of data from a Windows pic on the drive its still quite a process to get that to you Mac not simply a plug and use. Ok heres is the problem with this admitted stellar value USB drive NOWHERE DOES IT TELL YOU IT WILL NOT WORK WITH A MAC. Shame on you Western Digital. Shame Shame Shame. I understand there was a time in history that it was considered acceptable for a company to ignore Apple products and pretend they no longer existed and that is (NO) was accepted because for a while they didnt really exist. However that was what ten years ago at least! I bought this drive to back up some very valuable files of my deceased partner, memories, photos, documents that I cherished and wanted to preserve, which i could as long as i didnt buy a new Mac computer. After I bought a Mac i discovered that yes I could use this drive after I reformatted the drive, erasing all my beloved memories and starting from scratch. Tech support was atrocious and the only positive info they gave me was that i couldnt use the drive without erasing everything on it. So bottom line....If your sticking to Windows for life and want to save your lifes work then buy this drive. If you decide to migrate to a Mac, throw your life on this drive away and start from day one in your new Mac world. When will companies learn that we just all want to get along?

I use this drive to backup my laptop computer. I like the fact that it doesnt require a separate power cord, like some other external hard drives. I like the small form factor of this drive too. It is a similar size as a laptop computer hard drive. Also it supports USB 3.0 data transfer speeds, which is also nice, as USB 3.0 is more than ten times faster than USB 2.0. Of course USB 3.0 is backwards compatible, so it will work with any computers USB port, although its performance will be limited to the speed of the USB port that it is plugged into. Although it comes with software to encrypt the drive, I havent used it, so I cant vouch for the quality of that software. I encrypt my own files anyway, using other software. Some people use utilities like truecrypt, some people use password protected RAR files. Do whatever works best for you, if you want to encrypt something. As for the cloud storage software it comes with, that basically requires you to set up a drop box account, because that is what it really uses to store your date in the cloud. Thats kind of useless, you could just use drop box anyway, without needing to use this Western Digital software as a front end for it. Maybe it is useful for some people, but I dont find any use in doing things that way. So aside from my neutral comments about the software that this drive comes with, which I find to completely be unnecessary, I am just rating the hardware its self as 5 stars.

Pretty good device...very fast. For some strange reason, I cannot perform a system image on my Windows 7 computer with it, which is why I bought it in the first place. (Yes, its formatted properly). What I dont like is that it doesnt seem to let you decide how often or manually (which is what I want) that you can do a back-up. It wants to set an automatic backup date regardless of what you want. Well, tough...its just a laptop; were not going to be plugged in all the time, are we? Why does everyone make stuff with predetermined controls? You can just unplug it, but Im sure in time, that wont be good for it.

Works like a charm, (now)... The only problem i see is that these new hard drives come formatted as GPT (GUID) and not MBR and thats a problem when you perform a backup to this drive and then try and restore (you cant) at least when using Acronis backup software... These drives are pre-formatted to work with newer versions of Windows like Windows 10 NOT Windows 7 like Im using. I use Acronis backup software, when you try and create a backup you get a warning message that tells you that if you create this backup you will not be able to perform a restore because the destination disk was created using GPT (GUID) and not MBR. This is easily corrected by first moving the contents of the external drive (if you wish to keep them) to your internal hard drive then open Computer Management then select Disk Management and Right Click on this external drive and convert it to MBR then move the files back to the drive when your done and your ready to go.

This is my 5th WD Passport drive and my second WD USB 3.0 drive. There is hardly any difference between the 2015 version and the 2014 version drive - except for a few mm shaved off the external dimensions and a little faster read/write speed (updated firmware). I use my Passport drives to backup my data/documents. I backed up my 1 TB video archive at transfer speeds as high as 120 mb/s. Read speeds were also in the same range - 125-130 mb/s. This was extremely easy to use. I just plugged it in and followed the instructions in the User Manuals folder (ENG for English). After a quick download, I was able to set my back-up preferences (hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, etc.) and then click and drag my files into the Passport. Although my iTunes are saved in the Cloud, I was even able to fit my extensive music collection on the Passport too. Excelente!

Received it in good condition, no scratches. Cable was in the box. No issues with connecting to my laptop, just plug and go, as it said! Immediately used it to back up my laptop (~250 GB worth of data) with absolutely no issues. Pros: Tiny little thing. Fits easily in ant slide around too easily while in use. This is a very good thing for a hard drive, because movement while in use can ruin one pretty easily, e drawer for safe storage until needed. Had feet on it, so the drive didspecially if its jerky. Feet had enough friction to prevent accidentally knocking it off a desk. Cons: None that I can really think of. Have only owned it a month, havent had any issues at all though.

I own probably 20+ WD 2TB Passport USB 3.0 drives, of different models and colors, purchased over the past few years. I use these to store Disaster Recovery Image backups, both for myself and my clients. In general, I LOVE the drives and recommend them to every client that I work with. However, the two fuscia colored My Passport Ultra drives that I recently purchased, for one of my clients, are REAL DOGS! I often use Clonezilla to boot off a thumb drive and then use these USB Passports as the Image Repository, Ive been doing it for years without any problems. These two drives are such POWER HOGS that the LIVE Clonezilla OS cant even DETECT the drives when plugged into the desktops USB ports. Ive tested them on a number of different computers, using every available USB port (I understand that the rear USB ports often get more power, Ive tried them ALL!) Ive tried giving the drives longer for the OS to DETECT them, rebooting the OS repeatedly, everything that I can think of, and with the exception of only a couple of occasions, they have FAILED to be detected by the computer. (I then have plugged in an older version of the black WD 2TB Ultra drives and it works every time without the slightest delay.) Ive also noticed that the POWER LIGHT is very dim on these two FUSCIA drives, as comparred to my older black (blue, gray, silver, metal, and plastic) drives, of all sorts. After I boot into Windows, my computers can USUALLY detect these drives, but the power lights are still dimmer than others and dont appear to be nearly as quick and responsive. I dont know if I just got a couple of DUDS, or if the NEWER VERSION drives require MORE POWER than the older drives did. (I dont know if this has to do with the hardware encryption capabilities of these drives - which I never use, or really what is causing this problem.) I did notice on Amazon how some of the OLDER MODEL WD 2TB USB3 drives are actually selling for MORE MONEY (and are harder to find) than the newer VERSIONS of these drives, which I found ODD. I wonder if this is the reason WHY? Had I only purchased one of these drives, I would assume that it may be a fluke, but with TWO brand new identical drives performing poorly in exactly the same ways, Im less hopeful that I simply got a faulty product. Ill certainly call WD and see what they say. Either way, with over 1TB of data already on one of these drives (I had to use an OLD drive as an intermediary, but needed somewhere to transfer my clients images), it has been and will continue to be a PAIN to work with these drives, even if these drives are replaced and I need to migrate the data back off of them and verify the integrity of my images. Its all just a headache that I really dont need right now. For the foreseeable future, I believe that I will need to PAY MORE and wait longer to purchase the OLDER VERSIONS of this drive. This one just isnt cutting it! I know that these drives have historically been WONDERFUL, but buyers BEWARE, theres a NEW VERSION possibly looking to ruin your day! I hope that your experience is better than mine! (I would be interested in hearing from anyone with a SIMILAR experience with these drives, not promoting other products, but simply in regards to the VERSIONS of this particular product.) Thanks!

I bought this external 1TB HDD (Hard Drive Disk) on 2016 for having a backup of every type of file in my laptop and smartphone, everything from photos, videos, movies, music, documents, basically everything. Its 2018 and I still use it, although almost full, I carry this everywhere, and it still hasnt given any indications of giving up. Although there are things like Google Drive and Dropbox, I also keep a physical copy of everything in the cloud and in this HDD, so if anything were to fail, I would not lose anything at all. In all, Im very pleased with the performance of this HDD, and I truly recommend the brand to everyone.

I bought this item for my sons xbox one. he was needing a hard drive to store all his games on. This hard drive comes with 2 Tg of memory which is way more than he will ever use. The price was really good on it and i love the size of it. it is small and stores well with his xbox one. here are the descriptions of the hard drive: Secure portable storage with up to 3TB capacity • Optional 256-bit AES hardware encryption • Automatic local and cloud backup • Stylish design with a range of exciting colors • USB 3.0 connectivity • Formatted for Windows, reformatting required for Mac • 3-year limited warranty I feel like this was a really great purchase for him and it does everything we expected!

First off, theres really nothing wrong with the drive and its worked great for 7 years. Now I am having issues with corrupted files and trying to recover / fix the drive now is near impossible as it may be completely failing on me now. This is a sad because its been solid for very long and if I have to, I will have to reformat almost 500gb of backup data, which will be completely lost. Thank god its nothing too important though!

WD brings you the My Passport Ultra in a sleek and powerful device. 1TB of storage in a portable hard drive with the option to use cloud backup with Dropbox. Fast and easy connectivity using USB 3.0. Formatted NTFS for Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 operating systems. Requires reformatting for Mac OS. Compatibility may vary depending on user"s hardware configuration and operating systems. Portable Drive cases are available and sold separately. Compatible with: Mac
