This worked fine for about 24 hours. Began backing up and refiling hundreds of photos and footage for a big project. Put the computer to sleep. Came back several days later to continue working - the passport died. Did not show up in Disk Utility. Tried a different cable. Rebooted. Tried it on 2 other Macs. The power light was steady. At some point it did a system standby blinking but didnt show up in D.U. or the desktop. Tech support was polite but said nothing they could do - basically the product was defective, I have to pay for data recovery and we will have to get a new one from Amazon. Because my WD my book for Mac has worked fine, we went with the passport. When this happened and we researched solutions to bringing the passport back to life we found that this situation is not unusual - works fine for a couple of days and then dies. Obviously the quality of the product is not good and needless to say, Im really pissed off.

Works as described. I have a 1 TB that is A couple of years old and that one is still working like it is brand new. Love these. Had to get a bigger one since I will be starting to work with video.

The WD My Passport worked perfect the moment I plugged it into my MacBook Pro. My Mac now backs up hourly long as the My Passport is installed. This is so much cheaper than using a cloud back-up system. Ive had an older My Passport for my PC for years and it still works perfect.

Pros: size and speed—excellent Cons: I had trouble with the initial installation because I followed the instructions to download an update. After I did so, the drive would disconnect after about 2 seconds. Finally, I discarded all WD files, restarted my laptop, and started over—this time using the old driver. Since then, I have not had any problems. The speed is phenomenal. I very quickly copied all my laptop files (with exception of system) to the little WD. However, I wrote to customer service about the driver version issue some time ago and have not received a reply—which makes me wonder about their actual service. (No, I did not call and will do that if I experience any further problems. I should add that Im using an older OSX version (Mavericks OSX 9.5.5), so perhaps the new WD driver is meant to work with newer Mac systems. One note: Make sure you order the WD drive specified for your operating system. I have a Mac and also got one for my husband, who works on a PC. By the way, he loves his. We neither one do an automatic back-up, though, because we dont leave our computers turned on all the time.

I got this just in the nick of time, on my sons advice to do time-machine backups. I have a moderately complicated setup where I switch back and forth from Mac to a windows virtual machine, and when I upgraded from Yosemite to Sierra I had some flaky problems switching back and forth. Thanks to this passport I was able to do a complete restore back to Yosemite, where everything works just fine.

After having spent two weeks with the Passport 2TB for Mac: Arrived quickly and adequately packaged for a safe trip. Set Up: Minimal - read the instructions and connected the drive to my macbook; No configuration of the drive was required and it was instantly recognized by my macbook; I am using this primarily as an external storage device so I did not install the WD User Interface software that came with the device Speed: Moved approximately 175GB worth of data from my macbook which took approximately 15 minutes; the device performed quietly with no issues Overall: the size of the drive was a key decision driver for me and I am happy with the overall dimensions; fits in my daily backpack easily; in general, a very good purchase - recommended

despite what WD says, this doesnt work natively with macs even after partitioned to. then when partitioned, it doesnt work with both. HD shut down completely. WD customer service was good and prompt (past amazon warranty) and not a lot of trouble. I now use it for just movies on a tv with a friends PC.

Once upon a time, I purchased an external hard drive with the intention of using it on my iMac and as it turns out, it was formatted for Windows. Yeah, I know, I should know better, but then again, should I? Its not like Im an IT professional and I bought one that seemed to be the right one for my computer, thinking that any ole external hard drive would fit the bill so long as it was a reputable brand and had enough memory, but oh was I wrong about that. After not being able to get it to work on my iMac (and after letting so much time pass that I couldnt possibly return it), I decided to donate it to my PC that also happened to need an external hard drive. So with this external hard drive that is, not just compatible with the iMac, but actually MADE FOR MAC (meaning that there is no need to format so that it will work on the iMac, since it is formatted to work with the iMac straight out of the box), we are in business again! Both my iMac and my PC are backed-up and it couldnt have been easier. For the non tech-person like myself, its nice to be able to just plug-in and have everything work without the formatting and hard-to-understand pop-ups... So far, everything is great and lets hope that it stays that way.

Very nice product. I havent bought a HDD for many years and I am amazed by the small size and capacity. It was easy to use as a backup drive for my Macbook. I wanted to back up thumb drive files on it too but I havent determined that I am able to do that.
