AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-core, 24-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor

When the processor first arrived I was incredibly excited as it was the last piece I needed for my PC. However, when it arrived that packaging was badly damaged to the point that I was worried that one of the pins could be damaged. Thankfully they were fine but mistakes like this with a product this fragile and expensive are inexcusable.

This was a tough choice, the 5800X3D was the other option. Since AM4 is to be retired and DDR5 prices are not to settle for at least a couple years (this is 04/2022), it was important to have something that could hold up under multiple scenarios and for that time. In the end the lack of overclocking, the low Turbo speed and the poorer productivity showing of the 5800X3D swayed me towards the 5900X.

I was slowly upgrading my PC over time and was up to running a 6900xt for my GPU and a 3700x as my CPU. I play games on 1440 typically and let me use a common game as an example: Fortnite.

Not the best CPU on the market anymore since AMD released ZEN 5 and Intel released their 12th & 13th Gen but AMD 5000 series are definitely great CPUs! And if you play at 4K, games are GPU bound anyway!

Replaced a Ryzen 7 3700 with this one to maximize the life of my Mobo and Ram before upgrading to the next platform and DDR5. Works smoothly, stays cool, but no revolutionary difference to the 3700 it replaced. There is significantly better responsiveness when converting raw images via DxO Prime (an image processing program) but otherwise pretty similar. Using the Prism cooler that came with the 3700, it appears to spool up less frequently for some reason. Idle temps and max temps just about 10deg higher, no problem.
