> 24 hourI am on my third one of these. I initially ordered two. One was DOIA on arrival. It was rapidly replaced, no problem. But now about 3 months later the replacement is starting to make really horrible sounds when you open and close the drawer, and its taking an inordinate amount of time identifying discs and starting the burning process. I can do side by side comparisons with the other player, using the same software and the same files. The properly functioning one initializes and starts burning rapidly. The one with the bad noises takes a couple of minutes to even get started burning and it just makes noises that makes me think its going to be failing very soon. So that would mean a 50% failure rate. I dont know if I would buy these again. At least I have an asurion warranty because I think Im going to have to send it back and keep my fingers crossed that the new one will work. But the other drive, the one that works, has worked perfectly, quietly, and very fast.

> 24 hourWorked straight out of the box like a champ. It have been chewing through discs non-stop for days now with zero error. I connected the device to multiple USB 3.0 hubs to see if I can duplicate any of the difficulties others have been reporting with Windows 10. Intel, Asus, and Fresco controllers all worked. No issues with Windows 10 and the previously listed drivers. Reading the negative feedback, I think the issue lies with the end user. First, it will not just play a blu-ray. Do some research before purchasing a product. Second, to everyone complaining that device would not power on when plugged in. It wouldnt power up by just plugging it in. There is a power switch on the back that some what blends into the design of the unit. In the defense of those claiming all of their units were faulty, the power switch is stiff and difficult to operate. A quick glance at the user manual shows how to properly power up the device.

> 24 hourCant tell whether its the drive or the software that comes bundled with it, but I have only been able to create one backup successfully. Now, the software that comes bundled with the drive, Cyberlink Powerbackup 2.5, stops responding completely only when I attempt to write to this drive. I dont understand why ASUS would bundle software with their equipment that doesnt even work. I went so far as to upgrade to Cyberlink PowerBackup 2.6 and updated it. Got the same results. Until someone figures out whats failing, I wouldnt recommend buying this drive. Update: Contacted Cyberlink technical support team and provided them with the data they required. Theyre suggestions about adding these two device drivers to my machine, Download and install Intel® 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller driver under System Components section. Download and install Intel® Management Engine Interface driver under Motherboard section. caused my machine to not recognize any of the USB devices that were attached, I also ended up having to do a system restore just to get it to boot up again. Its the software, and they dont know how to fix it. Update: Got Acronis True Image 2017 and it doesnt fail, but it doesnt recognize the drive size and asks the user if they want to retry, cancel or format the disk. What ever you do, dont format it. If you do, even with a BD-RE disc, it becomes usable. Tech support sent me Acronis True Image 2018. Tested it and got the same results. Their tech support got back to me and stated that it is a known issue with their software and they are working to resolve it. Another update: Found that Acronis Software works with up to a 50GB BD-RE disc. Also found that if Acronis software just tries to write to a 100GB BD-RE disc, it makes the disc unusable. As of this writing, I raised Acronis awareness of this, but I have got no real response that indicates that they understand this clarification. They finally contacted me again and have resumed the escalation and troubleshooting process. They got a good understanding of the problem and worked the issue. I can only describe their solution as Booyah! It worked. Those guys kick ass!

> 24 hourI like everything about the functionality of the drive. Its been quick and efficient with no problems. It does take up a larger amount of space than I expected, but Im sure I just missed the measurements in the specs when I bought it.

> 24 hourThis drive is amazing, but there are things to know about it! What to expect is an extremely high quality Disc writer. It isn’t blazing fast on reads, and I haven’t tried burning a blu-ray, so I can’t comment there. However- this is important- IT DOES NOT COME WITH ON-BOARD BLU-RAY MEDIA SOFTWARE I didn’t realize this when I bought it, but it can not plug-and-play blu ray movies, you actually need to download software to be able to play movies. It works beautifully with the proper software (4K, HD audio, immersive). I gave this 5 stars because as a tool (and what it’s made for) it’s incredibly high quality and a painless installation. Also, it’s kinda big, check out the dimensions for sure. I like it, but it’s definitely not for everyone.

> 24 hourI have four external DVD drives. In 2012 I bought an LP that is built well and I used it a lot. It got old and stopped reading double layer DVDs so good. What I liked is this ASUS is actually an internal drive and ASUS built a shell around it to make it an external drive. The drive is sturdy and seems built to last, not like my LP Slimline that seemed flimsy (but in actuality is lasted a long time). Ive heard people say they didnt like the eject button because the blue light confused them some. The eject isnt the blue light, its to the right of the tray. No problem for me, but it isnt marked well and blends in with the facade. This external drive is probably the best external drive I have owned. The only way youre going to know though is to buy one and see for yourself.
