Debated whether getting this or a used Metcal for my home lab. I use Metcals at work, and although they are good, I cant justify the cost for my hobby needs. Ive now used this Hakko on around 20 occasions, and I absolutely love it. Not a huge fan of the sponge, but I dont see any real need for it when I have the golden wool to clean the tips. Changing temperatures is not as intuitive as it could be, but it works. For less than $100, this is as good as it gets.

Hakko could make a better looking unit, but it works amazing. The temp control function is annoying at first but goes away with further use.

This soldering station has been wonderfull. Some peope complain about the electronic setting of the temp. - yes it is slower to set but I get used to it and dont have to set the temp often.

Why did I wait so long to get this?! Works great and heats up really fast.

Excellent product

This is my first soldering iron and it works really well. It heats up in like 15 seconds or so, and when Im done it stores away easily back into the original packaging. I think it probably would be annoying if you had to change your temperature a lot and do a ton of temperature adjustments, but I almost never change mine.
