My first soldering iron. It should be my last. It is a great set up. I love all the different tips that are available. It heats up fast and the digital display is easy to read and use. It is great to have the sponge and tip cleaning right along with the stand. Nice.

If you need to solder SMD or very fine components, or you just want to make regular through-hole soldering a worry-free pleasure, get this and get the T18 BR02 tip (conical but with a shoulder, so you can get in anywhere and just heat what you need). I know Im jinxing myself, but I havent lifted a pad yet, in several weekends of fooling around with SOIC-8s. This iron is just worlds better than any radio shack special Id ever used before. The included cutters are actually very nice - flush instead of slightly inset like most diagonal cutters, and they feel solid and well made.

I’ve been soldering since I was a teenager (I’m now 40), and I’ve owned a few soldering irons over the years. I taught myself and I’d consider myself a really good solderer based on my experience. I know in most cases you either love it or hate it, but I love soldering. My last was an Aoyue rework station from MicroCenter, that I really liked. Unfortunately, the temperature control on the iron started going wonky and bouncing all around. I’ve always been curious what was so great about Hakko stations. I figured a soldering station is a soldering station. But since I had to replace my old one, I figured I’d take the plunge. Firing it up tonight for the first time to solder some micro switches with leads for my simulator rig, I was amazed! This thing is excellent! I didn’t think your soldering could actually be influenced that much by the station you use, but wow. My joints came out so perfect. The unit itself has a very sleek and modern design and a very small footprint. I am not used to that! My old unit was a massive clunky thing! The extra workspace is a godsend. I love this machine! Only thing I have to get used to is that the display is in Fahrenheit, but most of my other equipment has traditionally been in Celsius, so that will take a little getting used to, as I’ve developed a pretty good feel for what set points to use for what components (in Celsius). But I’m very happy with my new machine!

Excellent soldering station for anyone who wants to step up from a cheap mains powered iron. Great price and good quality components/build. Works well on a 200W 240v to 110v AC step down transformer - no issues at all.

Gets up to temp very quickly. I like the very precise, very stable (digital) temperature control. Hakko is pretty much the standard brand w/ plenty of accessories. It would be nice if there was a caddy to allow this to be more portable - (making one myself). Best soldering station you can get for under $100. Nice.

If your serious about soldering please dont hesitate to buy this! I have bought many different cheap soldering irons only to be disappointed almost every time. I did my research first. I took a long time to look at other brands around this price range but almost all of the reviews I read and test results pointed me back to the Hakko FX888D. I never knew what I was missing out with the temp control alone! This is by far the best soldering station I have ever used. Please do yourself a favor and pull the trigger on this purchase and get rid of all the other cheap soldering irons laying around.
