On the plus side, being able to communicate by satellite is very useful for back country scenarios, camping scenarios where youre off cell service, and disaster scenarios. It serves that well. On the minus side, Garmin Sync must be used to install updates or add new contacts, but it no longer works on Mac Catalina, which means that if I hadnt programmed it already Id be out of luck. With Garmin no longer providing working software, is it worth buying one or two at over $400? I wouldnt spend the money for something thats being treated like its at its end of life. Id go for one of the newer, better-supported satellite messengers. And in fact, if this ends up breaking and no longer being usable due to their failure to support the software, I probably wont be going to the expense of buying Garmin anything again. I dont invest in devices that will only live a couple of years. As long as the hardware works, the software should too, otherwise theyre ripping us off.

Do NOT purchase this device with any of the offered accessory packages. There NOT a single item in any accessory package that is worth a half dollar.

Be aware that NO Garmin GPS maps are compatible with this device. I have about $800 worth of maps for my Garmin 62 STC (awesome GPS) that will not work on this unit. If you need a good GPS this is not for you.

Better display than the last version, but I dont like that it requires a subscription to use GPS!

This item is useless for road travel and the web description is incorrect. I have been a faithful Garmin customer for other products but this one was a complete and total waste of money. Sadly, I purchased it well in advance of my planned road trip and apparently now I cannot return it. It is the most expensive doorstop I have ever purchased.

I had a health incident while hiking a portion of the AT alone. I was able to contact my husband, who was on another part of the trail and let him know I was turning around and where he could meet me. I wasnt sure he would get the message because of spotty cell phone reception. He did, however, receive the message and met me shortly after I arrived at our meeting destination. Hugh relief!! I was afraid he would be searching the trail for hours looking for me. I will never be without my Garmin inReach when in the backcountry. In my view, it has already paid for itself and then some.

I will never travel without !!! It charges fast, battery last a long time. Texting on it is like an early 2000 cell phone. U have to move the curser to the letter you want and select it. It does a very good job of predicting the next word which speed up things. Transmit amd receive speeds are good. Does not work indoors, it need a to be outside with a view of the sky. Great product. I depended on it during a hurricane. Subscription pricing is fair. Eveeyone should have one during an emergency.

I purchased this for my husband prior to a major mountaineering trip and, in all honesty, did so more for my peace of mind. That being said, it is a wonderful tool to have on just about any outdoor adventure... for the extreme and beginner adventurer alike. The features packed into this and the accompanying Garmin app are great for hiking, mountaineering, skiing, camping, etc. You can check the weather, send and receive messages, view your tracks, set waypoints, and so much more. And the best part? When my husbands out on lengthy adventures I dont have to worry, I can pull up the MapShare map to check his progress anytime, anywhere. The associated subscription packages are reasonably priced and offer a wide variety for any level of adventurer.

I used the InReach on several remote hunting trips in Alaska and recently as I drove from Alaska through Canada and its accuracy and tracking is awesome, plus the ability to send texts even in the most remote areas is a huge benefit.
