I have had my Garmin InReach Explorer+ for around 7 months now. It works great. I am always able to successfully connect with Iridium Satellites, and send position reports or text messages without any problems. During my learning curve, the Garmin Customer support was great. They were friendly, and very knowledgable. I was very impressed with the Garmin inReach Explore+ technical support team. I find the Garmin interface is well designed, and easy to use. I use the Garmin BlueTooth connection to my Apple IPAD to run the Garmin EarthMate app and to synchronize my Garmin with any changes that I make to my profile. The Garmin Position Maps have considerable detail and will work great for hikers and boaters. The Iridium Subscription rates with the Garmin are a fraction of the cost of the subscriptions for an Iridium phone. When I am away from civilization with my Garmin, sending and receiving text messages has met my needs and has proven to be very reliable. I am really impressed with the Garmin InReach Explorer. It is a quality built device and is built very durable. If you are boater and sail offshore, you need to look at the Garmin. The ability to send text messages to your family and friends, can save some worry and can avoid the USCG having to do unnecssary searches. If you ever seriously need help offhose, having the Garmin on board could save your life. Given the price of the Garmin, coupled with what it can do, it is really good deal. I dont normally write product reviews, but I am very impressed with the Garmin InReach Explorer+, and I am very impressed with the help that I have received from the Garmin support team. Thanks, Jim

Better display than the last version, but I dont like that it requires a subscription to use GPS!

I love this thing. I can finally send messages from anywhere. It lets me set waypoints so that if I get confused I can see which way to head back. The maps arent fabulous, but it supplements my paper maps, which I should carry anyway. I can create routes and navigate to the trailhead. Really gives me some peace of mind when Im hiking!

Needs a keypad. Texting is difficult. The plan is too expensive for what you get.

Firstly the device does what it is advertised to do. Albeit the only thing really bothersome is that somebody is unable to send a message to the device without prior contact from the device which I think is a bit poor. Much worse, and also the reason for my very negative review it the post purchse customer service. When things go wrong, dont expect any help from Garmin! My device was stolen just 3 months after it was purchased and I have been trying to get the device blocked and the service suspended for this moment so that a. the thief is unable to use it and b. I do not have to pay monthly sub fees for a device I no longer am able to use und until such time as that I can afford an replacement. But Garmin has not been helpful at all. The service was cancelled and the entire year subscription charged from my credit card. All my efforts to have this rectified have not worked and the service has just been stubborn all the way blaming me. So basically, the product is ok to use but beware if you have issues with the subscription. I did read similar previous reviews but did not heed the warnings.

I bought this product and will use it for trips to the BWCAW in northern MN. I use the device mostly for communication to the outside world that all is well and I have it just in case all is not well. My subscription is the most basic $16 a month freedom plan. I also used it for weather and for GPS capabilities as well.

I recently used this on a transatlantic voyage. It worked great for texting with family on shore. Battery life was very good.

Garmin is evil. I signed up for an annual plan at $11.99 per month. After 6 months my car was broken into and my inReach stolen. I called Garmin and they say I still have to continue paying for my annual contract or I can cancel now, but I will have to pay the remaining contract balance.

You may venture off the grid, but you’re never out of reach as long as you’re carrying an inReach SE+ or inReach Explorer+. These handheld satellite communicators are designed for the outdoor enthusiast who wants to roam farther and experience more without compromising their loved ones‘ peace of mind. From backcountry experiences to international adventures, inReach provides communication, location sharing, navigation and critical SOS functions for anyone who loves getting away from it all, on land, water or in the skies.
