We bought this to hopefully replace and upgrade my Wifes 8 year old Spot and Garmin GPSmap 60 with just the one unit. What is cool about this is the ability to have two way communication anywhere you are. But you can do that with the lower priced SE, or even the older Delorme units, which basically are the guts inside this Garmin.

Be aware that NO Garmin GPS maps are compatible with this device. I have about $800 worth of maps for my Garmin 62 STC (awesome GPS) that will not work on this unit. If you need a good GPS this is not for you.

First let me introduce myself. Im a nature photographer. I often go where no cell service has gone before. As such I have two important needs. I must know where I am and how to get where I wish to be. My other need is to communicate with the outside world for safety and more routine issues. The inReach, since its inception at DeLorme has filled the second need by providing a reliable two-way satellite texting device. Ive had each model and they all worked perfectly... period. My first need, orienteering was achieved over the years by a succession of GPS devices from Garmin. Each was a leap forward from its predecessor and also worked as advertised. Of course, Im no fool so theres a magnetic compass and map tucked in a pocket of my backpack in case of electronic failure.

Mac users beware the syncing software has a bug and Garmin said they know about it but no time frame on when they would get it fixed. The only fix they offered is borrow a PC. Not acceptable.

I bought this for my husband for when he goes out for his solo hunting trips to use in an emergency. it is fantastic peace of mind for me and for him in case something happens and he doesnt have cellphone reception.

I purchase the unit mainly for its inReach feature. But before we get to that and why lets talk about features and support. When first setting up my unit I had some issues with connectivity. A call to support they let me know that a server was down causing the issue but walked be thru an other avenue to set the unity up-they were pleasant and helpful!! In addition Garmin provides great how to videos and webinars on using the unit-spend time there learning. The unit to iPhone and laptop interface is a snap to use and very intuitive. Loading and using maps is also easy to follow-have an issue go to the videos on the Garmin wensite.

Ive always used Garmin gps units for hiking and for my car ( before MAPS app).
