Although I am just in the beginning stages of learning the art of stained glass, I am finding my Hakko FX601-02 to be awesome to work with. It is a nice weight, fits into your hand perfectly and I find it much easier to work with than the others I have tried! I am very happy with my purchase!

The Hakko FX-601 is designed to allow the tip to be easily exchanged--for example, if you want to do PCB soldering, youll want a pointed tip instead of a chisel tip. Unfortunately, as of the time of this writing, tips for the FX-601 solder (the T19 series) are very hard to find and expensive. Hakko also offers a nut and tip enclosure combination, part # B3730, which allows you to convert your FX-601 to an FX-600, thus allowing you to use the more plentiful and cheaper T18 series of tips, Unfortunately again, as of the time of this writing, its impossible to get ahold of part # B3730 unless perhaps you live in Japan or have someone who can ship parts to you from Japan. I love this solder--it heats up quickly, and makes the soldering process a smooth and pleasant one. But Im also frustrated with it because it has the potential for a lot more thats pretty much impossible to utilize. If you want to do stained glass but want greater flexibility in your tool, you might considering going for the FX-600 to begin with and purchase a chisel tip (T18-C/BC series) for stained glass. Excellent soldering iron!

I like the temperature control. I missed out on the old pistol designs before Hakko stopped production so this is the next best version for my uses. A smaller spade tip would be a handy accessory for this package.

Lightweight and easy to handle. I love the long cord.

Im new to stained glass and decided to spend a little extra on a good soldering iron. I am so glad I did! The Hakko FX-601 makes soldering so much easier than the yucky old irons that I used in my beginners class. This iron heats up quickly, maintains near perfectly even temperature, and just generally makes me look good.
