Good and sturdy, and they definitely latch into even the hardest of ice. I visited back home recently and happened to come during an ice storm, with several inches of thick ice present on the ground throughout my vacation. I was SO glad I thought ahead and brought my cleats along. It was my first time trying them and, by the feel of them, I couldve RUN on the ice had I wanted to. Of course that meant that whenever the family needed something from the car, e.g., groceries, I was the one who was volunteered to do it because I had my cleats! Argh, irony.

I am very happy with this purchase. I often go walking in the woods with my dog and had been having issues with ice. I slipped and fell a few times on ice patches that were hidden beneath a thin layer of snow. Worse than falling was when I almost fell but caught myself, wrenching my back or knee in the process. Ice is especially a problem on hills. Since I got these spikes, I can walk on any surface with complete confidence using my normal gait. I dont even bother walking around ice patches anymore. I normally wear these with my hiking boots, which look similar to the boots in the picture on Amazon. They slip on and off easily, about the effort required to put on a pair of socks. If I need to walk on pavement to cross a street, I usually take them off. They are very comfortable when walking on dirt, leaves, ice, and snow. I dont feel the spikes at all. Occasionally, when I walk on a hard surface for an extended period of time, such as crossing a frozen pond, I start to feel the spikes on my feet, so I would guess that these might become less comfortable to wear if you were to use them on solid ice for an extended period of time (like ice-fishing). I have had these for almost a year now. I have worn them about 25 times. So far, no signs of premature wear and tear. Update: I have had these for three years now, and used them through parts of four winters, probably about 100 walks in the woods (no hard-core hiking). The rubber harness on one of them recently broke. It did not break where the chain is attached to the harness, which seems to be pretty well reinforced, it is in the middle of the strap between two chains on the side of the shoe. I fixed it using a zip-tie attached to the two chains, so I am keeping them for now. The metal parts are still like new and there has been no rusting. Still happy with my purchase, but given that these are priced more than double the other similar looking brands, I cant help wondering if the cheaper brand might be a better value. I was partly sold by reviews from people who had them for 6 years, so I am disappointed that mine only lasted 3 years.

I like to go trail running in Vermont, where the land is steep, and the ice can get very thick and slick in the winter. I used be relegated to roads and treadmills in the winter, but now I can continue trail running all year round. They fit well over my running shoes, and enable me to go up and down steep hills covered in smooth ice. I feel more stable running in these on sheer ice than I do in my regular shoes in the summer. Theyve lasted several seasons so far, although one of the links now comes undone a bit, but Ive used them very heavily for running and hiking. I love love love these and have bought them for everyone in my family.

Used this in the Sierras and works on hard icy snow. If its slushy, all it does is collect snow and make your feet wetter. But you dont need spikes in slushy snow anyway. It was very stable on rocks. People with other designs had their spikes roll on rocks, but these are perfectly stable. They fit my shoes well and are easy to put on and take off. They do squish the shoes a bit, but what do you expect from a product made from rubber that you stretch around your shoes.

During the winter months, I wear Microspikes daily while walking my dog along country roads and through fields (no sidewalks in my tiny town). They have kept me steady and upright over snow and ice and have helped make walking in the winter just as pleasant as it is in other seasons. Its wonderful to be able to enjoy the time with my dog and the often stunning winter landscape without having to worry about slipping, sliding or falling - even if my dog gives an unexpected tug or wants to do a bit of romping around me. (He LOVES snow!) Ive even experimented by TRYING to make my foot slide across various surfaces - ice, hard-packed snow, powder over ice, slush, etc. - while wearing these and have been unable to do so. In addition, the design of Microspikes has kept them firmly on my feet if we venture into deeper snow; this was not always the case with Yaktrax Pro, a product Ive used - and really liked - in the past. (On several occasions, I lost a Yaktrax in deep snow and had to retrace my steps to retrieve it.) Microspikes have helped keep winter accessible to me - something I really appreciate. Very highly recommended. Note: Make sure you check the various listings on Amazon before ordering - price can vary substantially.

I hike almost daily on trails in upstate NY. I had been using Yaktracks which I’ve often thought of taking off and throwing in the woods in the middle of my walks. I tried the Katoolah micro spikes after a friend recommended them. For packed ice and snow, the Katoolah micro spikes are perfect. I’ve been walking up and down hills in the icy center of the trails and have not slipped once. I’ve often skipped my hikes when the trails were icy. No more. I am so pleased with these thus far.

I use a cane to walk and used Yaktrax out in the snow for years. But here in the Southern California mountains we have had five years of drought, so I didnt realize that the Yaktrax are not all that good for deep snow and hard, slick ice. And thats what weve got this year. After a 5-day storm brought 6 feet of snow and weeks of snow and ice, I bought these Kahtoolas because I fell in my Yaktrax due to their accumulation of snow. Yaktrax have no traction at all in snow thats over a few inches. And they fall off all the time. These Microspikes are awesome, even though I walk with a cane I feel very stable in deep snow and slick, hard ice. They are much easier to put on than the Yaktrax, yet they stay on and really clamp down into ice or snow without accumulating snow and losing their traction.

Every winter, Ive fallen a few times on ice while shoveling snow. These micro spikes are like a (Meteroid) power-up that lets me safely walk on ice when I need to. It even works on a hilly road with ice. Notes: 1. Its really easy to slip on. I am not afraid of these snapping spikes into my eyes like my old set of $15 ice spikes. 2. I have a mens 10.5 size Timberland boots and the Large size micro spikes was perfect. 3. The micro spikes are not really intended for hard surfaces like asphalt and concrete. I do use the micro spiked on those surfaces when there is ice.

These spikes are a bit too large for in-town use, except for the iciest of conditions. However, they are wonderful at filling in the gap between too icy to safely walk on the trail/mountain and lets put on the crampons. Great for packed snow! Lightweight as well, a breeze to carry in the backpack for early summer hikes when high altitude passes may still be covered in snow. I wish these were available fifteen years ago when I started hiking.
