So many reviews have mentioned the loud fan in this model that when I received it, and it was silent, I returned it thinking it was defective! I just got my replacement unit and it is also silent. I am left to believe that either: A: it only gets loud when hot. B: they have replaced the noisy fan with a quiet one. C: I got two defective units. I went ahead and installed the switch and it is working great so far for my home network.

Like the prior reviewer said, if its buried in a closet or setup in a loud rack of computers fine. But if you have it in the room with you all day, the cooling fan they uses is unethically loud. Ive got a Core I7 computer with a honking graphics card and its more quiet than this simple unmanaged switch. Its literally driving me nuts and Ill be returning it for a product that isnt as loud. Functionally it seems ok. THe physical mounting options are primarily for a rack or laying on a table. No wall mount without Jury Rigging it.

This switch does what it is supposed to do. It did not bite. It did not shoot flames at me. It did not make improper advances to my coworkers. It sits on a shelf, connects all of our computers to the router, and does not complain. Who could ask for more? When the impending robot apocalypse arrives I expect this switch to remain neutral.

In desperate need of a new switch for my home network, I did a search on Amazon for a replacement bordering on commercial grade. The only requirement was that I did not want to pay the typical price for a commercial grade piece of equipment. After looking at specs and reviews, I decided to go with the Netgear JGS516 product. Although not really a commercial grade product, it seemed to strike the right balance of performance and cost. Also, it had 16 ports and this was about the number which I required. Installation could not have been easier - you just plug it in and connect your cables. All of the configuring is automated. This item also has the ability to detect gigabit connections and automatically adjust to ensure optimal performance. This negates any need for me to do sys-ad work - something at which I am not skilled. Its been about two months since I installed it. There have been no problems to date. All in all, a good product for the money.

You have to make sure you are adjusting your pc so it will not get stuck while it is trying ti restart

Its fast, its absurdly easy, and durable. All metal casing, 4 screws attack each rackmounting ear, and the ears line up perfectly on standard 19 rackserver rails. Plus, its inexpensive. Netgears commercial-grade stuff is usually really good, and this is no exception.

The NETGEAR JGS516 Unmanaged Switch is designed for desktop or rackmount and features 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet, ProSAFE Lifetime Protection and more.
