Greater than one week2021 update: The umbrella is still incredible. No bends, no fraying, no rips. The open close mechanism works smoothly even after 2 years. The handle material is not holding up well though. I store it indoors with normal temperatures, I dont think it has even been left in a hot car once, but for some reason the handle is deteriorating. It is sticky with a very noticeable residue left on the hand afterwards and it has collected lint and dirt that cant be cleaned off. It seems like a bad batch of plastic/rubber to me, and if the umbrella wasnt so great Id probably replace it just to not have to deal with the handle. Original review: Im 63, I bought this umbrella to replace an older version of this same model by Totes, the one Im replacing lasted for almost 5 years before I broke one of the rivets folding it up. Ive had a few dozen umbrellas and almost every one of them was too small to keep my legs dry while walking in the rain. This Totes umbrella folds down to about the same size as a normal umbrella, but it has a MUCH larger diameter which lets me take full strides while walking without my feet and legs getting wet from the rain and dripping off the edges of the umbrella. It also does a great job keeping my backpack dry as the bag is entirely under the umbrella so rain doesnt drip down the edges of the umbrella onto the bag.

> 3 dayI bought this umbrella to get ready for El Nino here in California. Honestly the build quality is decent but not too far from being best. Really light weight and quite durable did I mention big? Its bigger than an your average umbrella could work for 2 people. The open and close mechanism helps especially getting out of the car. Now the reason why Im giving it a 4 stars is due to the fact that when it closes it doesnt retract back to its small original state. However when you actually open it, the whole thing goes up and opens. It would help if it comes back down too when you close it because then you dont have to reach for it when you are sitting down on your car seat and virtually have 0 chance of getting wet. Now just for my $0.02 I may have to look for another umbrella that retracts back all the way down and might just give this to someone else. #TheSearchForThePerfectUmbrella

Greater than one weekTotes offers a great lifetime guarantee on their products. Should they ever break, send them back and theyll fix it or send you a new one. In reality, after paying postage and the 5 dollar charge, you can pick up a new one on Amazon for about the same price and get it much quicker. This is actually my 3rd of this umbrella over the last several years. They usually hold up fairly well and can handle some abuse. Be careful though when others are around that dont know that it is an auto open/close umbrella. The 2nd one I had was broken by a friend you insisted on trying to slide it shut. Wrecked the spring inside and made the umbrella useless. Keeping it out of the hands of these people though, the umbrella works great to keep you dry. Size wise, this umbrella has a large open covering yet condenses down to a nice and small size to fit in my backpack so that I can carry it with me all the time, not just when I suspect rain.

> 3 dayI needed a compact collapsible umbrella that I could toss on the side of my backpack; golf umbrellas are cumbersome to carry. This is one of the few large collapsible umbrellas, and while the build quality is very good, there are a few flaws. 1. The main problem is that its not vented, and for an umbrella this big, it means that it gets blown around in the wind a lot. The umbrella can catch even mild gusts of wind and drag you a bit. This kind of makes you feel like youre carrying a big sail, even when theres mild wind. During gusts, I can only point this thing toward the direction of the wind and hope for the best. 2. Due to wind, one of the supports on the umbrella broke during use (thanks Amazon for the prompt attention to this). 3. Warranty. There is a great lifetime warranty, but it costs $5, plus your cost of shipping, and a wait of 2–6 weeks, to get a replacement item. Not worth it, Id say, unless if you have another umbrella to hold you over for 2–6 weeks. Im on the lookout for another one, but this thing works well enough that its the best option out there for a large collapsible umbrella.

> 3 dayFree umbrella broke after 14 years, had to pony up some money. A site I love for quality products highly recommend 2 umbrellas. I wanted the other one, but was not going to spend $49. So bought this one. Arrived today and I was surprised with how much you get for $23. First off, it is the thickest, sturdiest umbrella I have had in my hands. Next you open it up and the size of the umbrella is extremely suprising for how compact it is. So overall this is a great buy for the money. Only bad part, it was manufactured in China. But it does have lifetime warranty. So buy it online, and it will store the receipt for life. Something happens print the receipt and send it back.

> 3 dayI had this same line of auto umbrella for 6 years. Where Im at it rains 150 in/year and umbrellas are common, however this size auto umbrella is not found anywhere near me. All are those small purse type that covers half of ones body, and in my case useless when theres wind. This umbrella is small when closed and golf sized when open and closes quickly when I need to get in the car. Perfect. I needed another umbrella because I lost my original one. I read somewhere that the typical life of an umbrella is 2 years. While this lasted me longer, its not bullet proof. I took good care of it over the years and it kept me dry. Of course Id recommend it.

> 3 dayFirst one was rips and tears, second was being pushed inside out by storm and never recovered, they also tend to rust and the handle elastic falls off after awhile. Unfortunately tho its the best umbrella for most surface area for its most compact backpack fitting size. Its a real shame its so expensive when you have to replace it after 9 months or so
