This is generally a good hard drive. Its fast and operates just like a hard drive should. Unfortunately, it failed after only 3 years of having it. The spindle motor had broken on the inside and it would not function. Which is pretty unfortunate, to say the least, because Ive had the hard drive in my laptop and my desktop for significantly longer and both of those drives still work. I had only bought the 2 year data recovery plan too, so I had to pay $1.2k to get all of my data off the hard drive. This is a good drive to get as long as you back up all your stuff on a different drive as well, or on cloud storage or something. Dont expect it to last more than 3 years. If it does, then thats great. I would invest the extra cash into a Solid State Drive, but if you need a cheap option for storage, this drive is just fine

I had the worst day when I bought this, I wasnt expecting Western Digital to neglect Apple computers this much. Heres what happen, upon the un-boxing and hook it up right away, I find out that it is not Mac enable at the start. I bought 3 Externals back in 2009, and Had no problem, just plug and go, on my Xbox 360, PS3, Mac, and PC. I decided to update once the TBs drop in price, and I saw this one in a good deal. I pour through the instructions for about 20 mins, until I decide to go there web site. The Web site gives me nothing on why my Mac 2011(Summer) would not read the device. Then I search google, I come across Mac World Magazine forums. Where they sent me on a round about click session to reformat the device. In addition, to not once but twice having to reformat it for Mac and PC, because it would not work on my PS4 the first time. After a 3 hour process, I can say, I may shop other external SSD/HDDs, What really makes me upset, is the Security system; by that, I mean, once a day when I turn my computer on in the morning it takes an extra minute to wake it self up because the security program locks up the whole process; asks for a password every time, even though I set it to remember my computer. What is more of an hassle is when my computer goes to sleep, I just eject it and leave it unplug most of the time until I really need it because it will say it can be open but I have to reconnect the whole device upon reawakening my computer. After that Minute wait to activate and use; it works like a great hard drive.

Good drive, reasonably fast (if plugged into a USB 3.0 port). Ive been using TrueCrypt to encrypt my portable drives so far, and I wanted to try the WD Ultra because of its hardware encryption. From a quick research Ive done (before ordering the drive), its not 100% bulletproof and some university researchers found a few security holes and exploits. But unless youre protecting something from the NSA, its good enough. When you enable the hardware encryption enabled, the drive will show up as a CD in Windows when you plug it in. On that (virtual) CD, there is an executable which will prompt you for the password and will unlock the actual drive (which shows up as an additional drive in Windows). Its an easy process, does not require any third-party software, all in all it does what its supposed to do.

Fairly pleasant with this external hard drive! I brought the 1TB Black version. I was in need of more space and this makes my life much easier. A very huge plus for this drive was that it was super easy to set up. In 5 minutes of connecting, I could already load up storage into the drive and put it in use! Also, the WD software that comes with this drive instillation is also very useful. Scanning for my drive for errors is very helpful so kudos to WD for making a software like this! The one thing that I didnt like was that sometimes when I want to safely remove the hard drive, it would say it would be in use and cannot be removed. Everything would be closed yet this error would still pop up. Because of this reason, I had to give this drive 4 stars instead of 5. I actually dont mind this error because I can simply just shut off my laptop and remove it, but it can sometimes be annoying. TLDR; PROS: Easy to set up, great WD software to protect and backup your drive. Highly recommended. CONS: Sometimes cannot safely remove hard drive, have to shut down laptop in order to.

Ive got several of these, and use them for backups and large data transfer tasks. So far, Ive never had one fail, and Ive been using them for a couple years. Its always possible to get a bad one with any electronic device, but my experience to date has been one of reliability. Watch the software though - it can be very useful if you want to arrange for scheduled backups, and I use it frequently with good results. However, one time on one PC I found the software was gobbling up all kinds of CPU cycles and making it impossible to do anything on that box. Uninstalling the software solved the issue (using the device itself afterwards was still fine), but if things get crunchy on your box, take a look at your services and processes and make sure the software isnt constantly trying to call home to mommy. This only occurred once, and on one PC (I have/maintain several), so it might have been an anomaly. Still good drives. Definitely recommend getting cases for them so they dont get all banged up. Protect your investment.

As a giant nerd, hard drives of all shapes and sizes and capacities are very important to me. Ive used many drives in the past and all of my Western Digitals seem to last longer than competitors and outperform all expectations. More specifically to this drive. Going on the road for three months I needed a drive that I could trust for all of my sensitive data, as well as various movies and entertainment. The Western Digital Passport was perfect for this. Not only did it have the capacity to store my >TB movie/TV Collection, It also had the resilience to survive a literal cross country trip. This drive bounced around in my bag on buses, airplanes, cars and sometimes just in my back pocket for a solid three months and is still alive and perfectly functional to tell the tale today. The USB 3.0 speeds are pretty awesome as well! The size is perfect. Capacity is great. As always, another great product from WD!

I bought this some time in high school, probably sophomore year so around 8 years ago and this is still going strong. I took a lot of pictures and videos in high school and this was really good to store them on. I could keep it in my backpack or my jeans pockets size-wise. After 7 years with it, I had used it all I needed. My friends game with each other a lot and one needed more storage for his console so I gave him this and he said its made things so much quicker! He also says its never noticeable taking it with him because its so light and compact.

I had gotten this hard drive for my Xbox One and was concerned that the setup would be difficult, but it was INSANELY easy. For 2 TB, I am able to have all my games on my hard drive and easy to access using the Kinect. Additionally, the moment I plugged it in the Xbox gave me a prompt to set up the Hard drive which was simply giving it a name, naturally I went with Watson, due to my XBones increased capacity to remember and feel emotion. After that it asks if you want to use it as a default hard drive, and since mine was pretty full I said yes, so now all my games and everything downloads there. No need for additional outlets, takes only a minute to set up. Very satisfied with this purchase. (I would not go higher than 2 TB, because this will slow down the xbox, supposedly)

Im updating the rating on this from one to three stars after some kind members offered me help on getting it to work with my Mac Still not an easy task but it is possible and even easy if you havent yet stored a lot on the drive. However if you have a lot of data from a Windows pic on the drive its still quite a process to get that to you Mac not simply a plug and use. Ok heres is the problem with this admitted stellar value USB drive NOWHERE DOES IT TELL YOU IT WILL NOT WORK WITH A MAC. Shame on you Western Digital. Shame Shame Shame. I understand there was a time in history that it was considered acceptable for a company to ignore Apple products and pretend they no longer existed and that is (NO) was accepted because for a while they didnt really exist. However that was what ten years ago at least! I bought this drive to back up some very valuable files of my deceased partner, memories, photos, documents that I cherished and wanted to preserve, which i could as long as i didnt buy a new Mac computer. After I bought a Mac i discovered that yes I could use this drive after I reformatted the drive, erasing all my beloved memories and starting from scratch. Tech support was atrocious and the only positive info they gave me was that i couldnt use the drive without erasing everything on it. So bottom line....If your sticking to Windows for life and want to save your lifes work then buy this drive. If you decide to migrate to a Mac, throw your life on this drive away and start from day one in your new Mac world. When will companies learn that we just all want to get along?

Identical in size to other My Passport drives, but exactly reversed. The connector is on the opposite side of the drive from all my other Passports. I got this one to replace one that just stopped working after 3 years. The only negative is that if you are buying this drive for color (red for secured, black for unsecured, etc.) you will be disappointed. Only the top cover of the drive has color. The rest of the drive is black. Kinds looks stupid and doesnt in any way let you set it on a shelf with other drives and immediately differentiate them by color. You barely see the color from the side of the drive and not at all from the back.

WD brings you the My Passport Ultra in a sleek and powerful device. 1TB of storage in a portable hard drive with the option to use cloud backup with Dropbox. Fast and easy connectivity using USB 3.0. Formatted NTFS for Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 operating systems. Requires reformatting for Mac OS. Compatibility may vary depending on user"s hardware configuration and operating systems. Portable Drive cases are available and sold separately. Compatible with: Mac
