The headphones sound quality are definitely a great bang for the buck, but they are not durable at all. Ive had mine for about 2 - 3 months and just going through everyday use, the hinge on the headphones broke while sitting in my bag. There was no unusual use to them, it just wore away and snapped. Going through the manufacturer warranty / repair system seems kind of sketchy since you dont really open a case with them or anything, you just ship it out to them and see what happens, but it seems to be my last hope.

Ive bought the athm50s some years ago. Still have them. But I hated them since day1. So I get deep into forums, reviews, videos, etc. to get a new pair of headphones and everything point at the ath-m40x. Soundwise I felt some release in terms of frequencies, comparing them to the athm50s. The 40s have a more flat response, one that you can relate to. The athm50s could sound great on their own, but really, when I heard anything I mix and mastered in them in other places it changes radically. The athm40x maybe is not the most impressive sound if you want them as a prosumer, but if you are into recording, making music, mixing and mastering they are a reliable tool. Comfortwise- I still dont buy them- The pressure over my ears are a little disconforting, but I guess other caps to replace the stock ones would work just fine. Anyway they are way more comfortable than the original athm50s. In this price range I would recommend the athm40x to anyone whose into making music. They are great headphones, and work fine if you just happen to have another different pair to compare your mixes to.

All I can say is WOW. I got these for $105 on Amazon after reading all the reviews. I got them for my 14 yr old daughter who was getting tired of her earplugs headphones. I decided to spend a little extra money and buy a quality set of headphones but didnt want to break the bank for a teenager and these happen to be on special. I am definitely not an headphones expert but good sound is good sound and these cans are amazing for the natural and clarity sound it puts out. I didnt expect them to be this good for $105. I have listen to expensive Bose and Sennheiser headphones and these are pretty comparable. The build quality is very good for the price with mostly plastic components. The ear pads are super soft and replace-able. I really like the two wires (especially the coil one) that comes with it and they are also replace-able if its damage. I will probably splurge and buy myself the ATH-M50X as I am definitely a Audio Technica fan now.

The headphones are great for the money. I bought them in december 2014, they lasted till february 2016. They ended up breaking along the swivel point on them. It cracked and the ear cup came off, being only connected by the cable on the inside.

I wanted to buy a pair of monitoring headphones so that I could listen to the more important details that prevented my mixes from having flagship quality, such as unneeded artifacts, masked samples and weak low-end... and I can say from the few times I used them that they do the job perfectly. Although I was previously used to working with bass-heavy headphones that stressed the low end, having a flat response gives a very accurate idea of how mixes are heard and what should be done to achieve the necessary improvements. It appears that the flat frequency response is a major upside. Sound isolation is near perfect, noise leakage is minimal and the quality of construction material also appears to be very good. For those claiming discomfort when wearing them, this is logical in my opinion due to the sound isolation features, as it is important to keep ones ears tight so that the auditory result heard is not compromised by external parasitic sounds - also having ones headphones in the ear for large monitoring times was never a comfortable task - ear and listening breaks are always needed. Overall great headphones for the price band paid, would definitely recommend.

Alright. Lets kill the elephant in the room. These headphones absolutely destroy the ATM-50xs. I dont even know how to explain. Ok, FLAT. The treble and highs on the M50s are high, and they hurt. These M40s are so balanced its ridiculous. The base is there, not overpowering. The treble is perfect, absolutely perfect. Mids and highs are also perfectly balanced. Voice is CLEAR as day. I plugged these headphones in for the first time, used them for 43 seconds, took them off, and instantly said get the hell out of here. How?!. They are good, really good. Look on Reddit, and search it on YouTube. Im a witness and Ill say it again, the M40s have no competition in the Audio Technical line, period. Get them.
