I have been soldering for years with cheap soldering irons and with the Hakko, I finally know what I have been missing. Heats super fast and has great temp control!

Going from a soldering pen from RadioShack to this was a tremendous step, but it was well worth the price. Going from a 5 minute heating cycle to 15 seconds has made every job far easier. Great quality and construction. Tips and heating elements are easy to change. Highly recommended.

Excellent soldering station. Controls are a bit cumbersome at first. Would be perfect with automatic shut-off.

Really big fan. Fast temp changes and solid control. Use it for PCBs, large capacitors (used in speaker crossovers) and speaker wires, handles everything with no issues so far.

I highly recommend the Hakko FX-888D. I build tweed and blackface guitar amps as a hobby as well as install pickups and pots in my electric guitars. When I first got into it, I was using the cheaper Weller irons, but the tips wore out quickly and were expensive to replace, or they sporadically just quit working, so I did some research on soldering stations. I picked the FX-888D over the Weller WE1010NA mostly because of how dissatisfied I was with their less expensive models. Ive had the FX-888D for about 4 years at this point (purchased April 2017), and it has worked flawlessly. The transformer is heavy--youre not going to accidentally pull it off the table. The iron holder is heavy as well--made of metal. When you have the iron resting in it, its secure--it wont fall out, and the yellow part is a heat sink, so the base doesnt get hot. The tips last forever, and the variety of tips available for it give me a lot of versatility for different soldering jobs. Also, the design of the wand is excellent engineering, which youll see when you trade out the tips. Its not only a smart and durable design, its also serviceable should parts of it break down from wear and tear. The other big plus is fantastic customer support from Hakko. Recently, I began to have a problem with it due to my own tendency to unplug the iron from the base when I store it (and probably jerking the cord around) where the pin sockets in the receptacle had become loose. I sent an email to user support on the American Hakko site, and within minutes, I received a reply from an actual human being who sent me the part number and instructions for how to order it. Fifteen minutes later, Id purchased the part, and it came via FedEx before the end of the week. So in the final analysis: 1) Its an excellent soldering iron. The quality of my electronics projects improved exponentially after I got it. The high quality of the tips and the pinpoint control over the temperature made all the difference. 2) Its safe. Unlike the coil bases that most irons have, the base for the FX-888D is really stable, and it does a great job of dissipating the heat. I accidentally left it on when I went to work one day. Not only did it not burn down the house, it didnt even heat the surface it was sitting on. 3) Its solid. If you plan on doing soldering on a regular basis at all, its worth your money to invest in this product. I ended up spending almost this much on cheaper irons that died--and were just a lot harder to solder with--before investing in this. 4) If it breaks, you can fix it for cheaper than it costs for a new one. The receptacle cost $9. I bought two of them and a couple of tips and got free FedEx shipping. 5) Customer service is excellent. Youre dealing with a person, and I got the fastest, friendliest response Ive ever gotten for any product. First rate.

As a hobbyist, I was growing very dissatisfied with the 40 watt Weller unit. After exhaustive research, I settled on this one and Im very impressed. The iron is very comfortable and heats up ridiculously quick (700 degrees in about 20 seconds). As other reviewers noted, the temperature controls arent intuitive but after the first use you realize what their control strategy is and it becomes second nature. The iron cord is nice as well and seems to lay nicely and not interfere in any way with soldering. Cheaper cords always seem to have a weird twist that make you have to reposition your hand constantly to make sure the cord stays out of the way. Its also nice that the power supply and cord are separate from the iron so you can have your base out of the way. I cant speak to the presets or the lock feature since I havent had a use for them yet. For those who will be sharing this or are buying this for your kids or beginners (mine are 10 and 14) they couldnt be happier. They too used the Weller and were frustrated by cord, poor quality tips and uneven heating. They both were very happy and impressed by how much better this unit is and how much more they enjoy soldering with it. The stand is quite nice and seems very well thought out. The cutters work very well but do note that theyre not intended to cut harder/thicker wires like those found on header pins as they will dent. Other reviewers also note that this is an expensive unit but given my poor experience with cheaper irons this was money very well spent. Since it arrived I have not once thought that I paid too much and in fact I feel like its really a pretty good deal. As Ben Franklin said The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten. Truer words never spoken.

For some explainable reason, Hakko advertises the preset temperature function, yet that is not enabled out of the box. And what they call an instruction manual doesnt explain how to enable it. I had to go to the web site to figure it out. The downloadable PDF manual available does explain it and I guess until they run out of the old ones, they arent updating what is shipping. After figuring out how to get the presets working, I was having a hard time getting clean solder joints. I measured the tip temperature and found it was off by over 300F! No wonder things werent working well. I had it set to 750F but it was only heating to about 430F. After going through the temperature adjustment, I finally got the tip to heat to the indicated temperature. I have seen a lot of positive reviews online (outside of Amazon) yet none of them talked about the preset issue. Im not sure if this is a result of a software update to the unit that was made after those reviews or not, but I would have expected a couple to mention it if they had that problem. So once the iron was adjusted and configured right, it is working great. I am only give it 3 stars because of headaches caused by the poor QC/Instructions.

Great soldering station but made way more complicated to operate than need be thanks to the improved digital version of the far more user friendly analog station it replaced. Plan on visiting YouTube if you want to know how to use it... the included manual is near useless without doing so.

Reliable digital technology by HAKKO – Introducing the HAKKO FX-888D Excellent thermal recovery Heater output has been increased by 30% compared to that of the conventional models HAKKO 936·937. Also FX-888D delivers excellent thermal recovery by using T18 series tips for their terrific heat conductivity. This allows soldering at a lower set temperature and reducing the thermal impact on components as well as tip oxidation that can shorten tip life. Thermal recovery graph Rise time to 350Degree C is 20 seconds faster and tip temperature drop is reduced during continuous work. HAKKO FX-888D performance comparison graph with conventional stations Able to shorten the time required for the same work and improve work efficiency significantly. Designed to be User-Friendly Small footprint Compact station body requires a space of only 100 (W) x 120 (D) mm. What’s more, points that come into contact with the floor are positioned as close to the outer edge of the body as possible to improve stability and make the station difficult to fall over. Simple and easy operation With only two operation buttons of UP and ENTER in the center, operation is simple and easy. Even if you’re not familiar with operation of machines, you can operate it without difficulty. Iron holder with full of functions An iron holder of the same color of a soldering station comes as a set. The highly functional iron holder not only improves ease of use, but also brings a sense of visual consistency to the work environment. Silver Soldering station Iron holder Blue & yellow Soldering station Iron holder Strict temperature management Digital display The FX-888D’s digital display makes it easy to check the set temperature at a glance.
