I just love the muted tones in this line and how all the colors seem to go together so nicely. I do mostly nature and botanical drawing and painting. These colors are fun to work with and just seem to give a more professional look. I initially bought the 12 pack and was so pleased I ordered this to have the complete set. The pencils feel really good too and sharpen nicely. They are a little soft to get/keep a really sharp point but I am using another pencil for very fine lines.

Love these pencils to draw. They are thicker than average and sturdy yet draw soft and blend amazing. Great for drawing wildlife and landscapes. I bought the 12 pack and liked so much I had to buy the 24 pack!

I bought this 12 pencil set to replenish my dwindling supply of Derwent Drawing pencils, so this was not my first experience with the product. I have used them for several years- since Derwent first released them. I love them so much that I use them down to the tiniest nubs! Sometimes I even take the core out of the wood case and use it in a lead holder (Koh-I-Noor makes a good one for this). It is a chore t do this, but worth the time and effort because I do not have an art supply store within driving distance, and I have to order all of my higher quality supplies online. The earthy browns (chocolate, sanguine, sepia red, ruby earth) are quite rich, while the black and white are the most opaque of all of the colored pencils I have ever used. This was the first time I have tried the blues and greens in this line. The 12 piece set has the following colors: Ink Blue, which is a warmer, muted dark blue; Soloway blue, pale grayish blue which is perfect for clouds and eye sclera; Olive Earth- the name describes the color perfectly Green Shadow- a pale grayish green, which has more applications for nature drawing than I expected! Brown Ochre- a light golden brown- this color is more like the yellow ochre in other pencils in my opinion Yellow Ochre- a buttery mellow yellow- brighter and less ochrey that most yellow ochre shades, which tend to be more brown or gray Sanguine- a terracotta red-orange; I have older pencils from this line, one of which is named terracotta, and I cannot tell the swatches apart Sepia (red)- darker than Sanguine but in the same color family Ruby Earth- the closest approximation I can think of is madder brown- this is a cooler reddish brown than sepia or sanguine Chocolate- another self explanatory color Ivory black- dense, velvety black Chinese white- even softer and creamier than Prismacolor white; It will not blot out colors underneath, but it is one of the best white colored pencils on the market (my opinion) As others have already stated, many of the shades are muted, but not weak. Earthy tones are very rich, and they layer and blend quite well with other colored pencils. I use them along with oil and wax types including Derwent Artist and Studio colored pencils, Derwent watercolor and Inktense pencils; Koh-i-Noor Nero and Progresso lines, Primacolor Premier, and Faber Castel Polychromos. I only wish I had bought a larger set because now I want to try all of the colors!

Fur, feather, and nature lovers rejoice..! For years, I had used Derwents Chinese White colored pencil, because it was both opaque and lightfast. Then, about a month ago, I was watching some videos by an amazing artist, where she was using some of the other Derwent colored drawing pencils. I ordered and received them in perfect condition. They blend beautifully, and can be used with oms or powder blender. Theyre priced well, also.

Years ago, I was introduced to Derwent Drawing pencils as part of a promo and received a 6 piece set through an art supply vendor. As a colored pencil artist, I was soon amazed at the quality, pigment and feel of these pencils. I liked them so much that I decided to recently upgrade to the full 24 set and saw that Amazon had a fantastic price. The colors in this set are subtle, beautiful shades that I could not find in other sets of popular pencils. These pencils are truly the elite artist grade colored pencil, in that they are super creamy/waxy and pigmented and layer flawlessly. Though they appear to be marketed for rendering animals, they are equally impressive for rendering flesh tones, and architectural pieces. They work very well combined with other pencils and layer well with oil-based or wax-based brands. The sensory feel of these cross between a wax- based and oil-based colored pencil but with wider leads. From what Ive observed, they leave no wax bloom or excessive residue. The pigments are intense that you can go over several previous layers of colored pencil (other brands) and easily leave rich, broad strokes. They are perfect for final detailed accents on pieces. The Chinese White pencil in the set is also perfect for highlighting over layers of pencil, and covers well on darker papers. As for being erasable, they will erase to a certain degree on most paper. Though, they do so very well on black, smoother illustration board. They dont erase as well on other papers, but I find that if I apply them over subsequent layers of colored pencil, they erase better. For these pencils, paper choice plays an important role. They are bit too rich and bold for regular sketching/copy paper. I find that they work beautifully on vellum bristol, illustration board and erase especially well on black illustration board. They also hold up well on artist professional grade drawing paper that has a weight of 90lb or more. If you are trying to achieve a smooth finish, I probably wouldnt use these on general sketchbook or heavy, broad toothed paper or you will see a lot of the papers texture. For the colored pencil artist or those with special interest in drawing, these pencils are very much recommended. Theyre well made, of excellent quality in durability and lightfast ratings (the colors wont easily fade) and the leads last a long time. *Important: You will need a wider hole pencil sharpener for these. Something metal and durable. The Derwent brand pastel pencil sharper is perfect for these pencils. I cannot say enough good things about these amazing pencils and am fortunate to have acquired the full set!

Love these pencils; so smooth and great for layering. The only complaint I have is the small color range.

Very creamy but still holds just enough point to get some detail. The colors are great for autumn landscapes. A very enjoyable set.
