I can see why these pencils are called fur and feather pencils. They very soft almost like pastel pencil. They are softer than Prismacolor Premier which I have and like very much. These seem to have less binder/wax than other color pencils. The color set covers most of the warm and cool colors of most animals coats. So if you are going to drawn animals this is a great set to have. To try them out I drew the head of the fox on the cover of the tin and was easily able to achieve the same look and I am not a professional artist by any means. There are not any bright colors like red or bright blue for certain birds however. They are mostly muted colors. I bought them to draw animals so I like these very much for that task. Be sure the check out the color bar or Derwents color chart on their website before buying these to make sure this is the color set you really want.

Just received them, but one of the pencils had a broken point, I haven’t used all so do t know if any more are like that, so kind of disappointed with that. Otherwise derwent is usually a good brand. I wish they would replace the broken pencils with new!

I would not call these the best pencils for coloring (as in coloring books), they leave behind a lot of white spaces on the paper and the color palette is very limited. But they are soft and nice to use for sketching/in a sketchbook. Or to use in nature studies, etc. I think of them as a ice alternative to charcoal or pastels, but creamy.

Love these pencils; so smooth and great for layering. The only complaint I have is the small color range.

The colors are definitely geared toward nature and landscapes, and how wonderful it is to know that EACH pencil is lightfast!! Although they are called drawing pencils, they blend beautifully with traditional colored pencil, both oil-based and wax-based. Using odorless mineral spirits is not a problem and you will find that the white pencil is one of the most opaque, right up there with Prismacolor and Luminance whites. On the downside there are only 24 colors and the pencil will not sharpen to a fine point. These pencils are not for fine detailing---but considering the lightfastness and the natural colors, they are most definitely a great buy!.

Love love love this color selection. Most sets have so many colors that I will never use, this is very muted and almost just right. Ill have to carry another tin with some additional colors for landscape drawings, but I am very happy with these. Pics are color swatches on cold pressed watercolor paper and black painters tape. The tape is much smoother and the color laid down nicely without much pressure, the more toothy paper needed a lot of attention to get pigment into the pits. Hope that helps give an idea of the softness. No tips were broken on arrival so hopefully they will all be intact as I sharpen them down.

Years ago, I was introduced to Derwent Drawing pencils as part of a promo and received a 6 piece set through an art supply vendor. As a colored pencil artist, I was soon amazed at the quality, pigment and feel of these pencils. I liked them so much that I decided to recently upgrade to the full 24 set and saw that Amazon had a fantastic price. The colors in this set are subtle, beautiful shades that I could not find in other sets of popular pencils. These pencils are truly the elite artist grade colored pencil, in that they are super creamy/waxy and pigmented and layer flawlessly. Though they appear to be marketed for rendering animals, they are equally impressive for rendering flesh tones, and architectural pieces. They work very well combined with other pencils and layer well with oil-based or wax-based brands. The sensory feel of these cross between a wax- based and oil-based colored pencil but with wider leads. From what Ive observed, they leave no wax bloom or excessive residue. The pigments are intense that you can go over several previous layers of colored pencil (other brands) and easily leave rich, broad strokes. They are perfect for final detailed accents on pieces. The Chinese White pencil in the set is also perfect for highlighting over layers of pencil, and covers well on darker papers. As for being erasable, they will erase to a certain degree on most paper. Though, they do so very well on black, smoother illustration board. They dont erase as well on other papers, but I find that if I apply them over subsequent layers of colored pencil, they erase better. For these pencils, paper choice plays an important role. They are bit too rich and bold for regular sketching/copy paper. I find that they work beautifully on vellum bristol, illustration board and erase especially well on black illustration board. They also hold up well on artist professional grade drawing paper that has a weight of 90lb or more. If you are trying to achieve a smooth finish, I probably wouldnt use these on general sketchbook or heavy, broad toothed paper or you will see a lot of the papers texture. For the colored pencil artist or those with special interest in drawing, these pencils are very much recommended. Theyre well made, of excellent quality in durability and lightfast ratings (the colors wont easily fade) and the leads last a long time. *Important: You will need a wider hole pencil sharpener for these. Something metal and durable. The Derwent brand pastel pencil sharper is perfect for these pencils. I cannot say enough good things about these amazing pencils and am fortunate to have acquired the full set!

In the recent past, I purchased a few Derwent Drawing pencils open stock through Jacksons Art in the UK. I liked them so well I decided to purchase the 24-pencil set because I love working with natural, muted colors. However, upon opening the tin today I was concerned that (1) either the manufacturing quality has gone downhill or (2) the set I received are 2nds. The open stock pencils I purchased previously are creamy when laying down the color. This is not the case with at least half of the set I received today. Those pencils are quite dry and scratchy on the page. The second concern is cosmetic but makes me wonder about the set. Each Derwent Drawing pencil has information imprinted in White lettering on the pencil which includes the following; England and Derwent Drawing, as well as the color name and color number. On a majority of the pencils, the ink is smeared and blurry/sloppy; so much so that a couple of the color names are difficult to read. I was expecting the same high quality as the open stock pencils and am greatly disappointed.
