I fitst purchased the similar Foretrex 101 about 15 years ago when as an active windsurfer I noted a large number of frequent enthuiasts were wearing the device both as a real time speedometer and for its resetable max speed display. Also interesting to let the odometer track your surprising days milage. It was my best sailing buddy for years, and also worn sometimes for skiing and big boat sailing. About 5 years back, the scratched and worn window got smashed in a ws crash. These units definately need a screen protector for active use. The total ascent or descent display is great for hikers and skiers. Wrist mount pefect for many active uses. Only a b/w plotter screen, it doesn’t load maps. Lots of display windows you can cycle through. Although today I am physically unable to ws, I just got around to replacing it, partly for reminisic purposes. A few comments: Not much changed from the original Garmin product. Memory limitations for waypoints and tracks surprisingly limited in this era of cheap memory. The time of day field for a multitude of functions do not include a seconds display. And for use in common sail races, it does not have a timer countdown with seconds display. For the want of modest firmware programing, a lot of potetial fuctionallity has been skipped. Satellite lock is very tenacious.

Very good bit of kit, better than the 401 and can be used with nvgs.

I was concerned that I would need some sort of case or screen protector for the GPS due to bad experiences with glass screens in the past, but upon receipt I realized that it was completely unnecessary. The quality is fantastic and the screen is extremely durable. Excellent GPS signal and quality overall.

With technology of today, why they didnt add a color display. Also for the money they could have also added a better wrist strap! Otherwise, it is well made, fast and very accurate.

Foretrex 601 wird bei mir als Backupgerät genutzt. Als Geologe bin ich häufig in extrem verlassenen Gebieten und nutze das Garmin 66i und das vorliegende Gerät. Habe es immer am Arm (Tag und Nacht) und nutze (speichere) die wichtigsten täglichen Routen. Ein paar Softwarefehler werden miteingekauft (so ist z.Bsp. bei einer Umkehrung der Route, die man in gleicher Abfolge 2X durchgeführt hat, bei einer Zielführung zum Camp bereits nach einer Runde das Gerät auf dem Nachhauseweg, was natürlich nicht geht) , aber der Service von Garmin Deutschland ist mehr als lausig und viel schlimmer, einige Mitarbeiter sind leider bei schwierigen Fragen völlig ahnungslos. Daher sollte man hier nicht auf Hilfe hoffen. Ansonsten ist das Gerät erste Wahl im wirklichen harten Einsatz, wo man Fenix und co. nicht wirklich nutzen kann. Die angegebenen 36 h Laufzeit wurden bei mir in etwa erreicht. LG Dr. Claus

Got this to replace my 401 and I couldn’t be happier. I’m a Garmin fan for life. Their watches and gps are great and never disappoint. I would definitely buy again
