As long as you have extra batteries always with you this bulky item could save your life. When your in the boonies, even maps with compasses can confuse the most well trained. This item will get you back to safety. That being said still carry maps and mislspec compasses redundancy means survival!

Great gps unit ! Use for hiking new trails

I bought this purely as a knotmeter while sailing. It works perfectly, giving values close to the helmsman’s instruments.

I bought this as I wanted a larger screen for surfski paddling. I also have regular problems with the Garmin charging device on their watch style devices.

Extremely useful, however the 401 also works just as well for basic outdoor navigation

I bought this because I spend a lot of time alone out in the Arizona deserts and forests. First time I tried to use this thing I was just outside of Prescott. Clear view of the sky in all directions, but the thing couldnt maintain satellite reception. Now, I dont know if this has anything to do with the ransomware thing that Garmin just got hit with, nor do I care. If I cant count on this thing to keep me from getting lost then what good is it? Sadly Ive had this for more than a month so its too late to get my money back from Amazon. Total ripoff. Avoid Garmin like the plague!
