> 3 dayIm doing a lot of small electronics now and needed a quality set up. While the UI is a bit wonky an older used unit wasnt going to save me any money by the time I added the tips etc included with this kit.

> 3 dayIve found that this goes great with the quadhands soldering platform (with magnetic flexible arms.) I can sandwich the iron base between the magnetic arms and virtuality negate any worries of tipping the iron holder over and burning the house down. A spool of solder wire slipped over one of the flex arms and youve got a fantastically compact, sturdy and customizable setup. With four extra hands to boot! Just take care of your tips, especially the smaller ones. Ive found that Tip Tinner is a nice addition to my setup. Ive got a tin adhered to the base of my quadhands station and I think Ive been able to extend the lifespan of my tips using that stuff. I recommend taking a look at those products no matter what iron you own.

> 3 dayGreat iron. I replaced a very old Weller with it, and it is a big improvement. To be fair to the Weller, it wasnt one of their more well regarded models, and I dont think it was functioning at its best any more either, so its not a fair comparison. The Hakko heats up fast and can handle joints with a fair amount of thermal mass. If you cant make a nice joint with it, its not the irons fault... My gripes are minor - the interface is very minimal and as such isnt exactly intuitive, but its easy enough to figure out. The instructions that came with the unit explain how to recall temperature presets, but dont mention that this functionality is disabled by default, nor do they explain how to enable them. Youll have to Google that. Nevertheless an excellent soldering station.

Greater than one weekThis Hakko FX888D is a far cry from the standard iron. Once learning the quite puzzling interface of the control unit(go to Hakko.com)this station works like a dream. Yes the interface takes a bit of a learning curve but is possible with a little persistence. Now that youre up and running, this unit does exactly what its supposed to. Heats quickly to set temperature, maintains and then once hand unit is placed back in holder it drops the temp to the idle setting. Uses T18 tips and theres a boat load of different ones. For the price and quality its hard to beat. Not a $600 station by no means, looks cartoon-ish but works like a champ for most jobs.

> 3 dayI am extremely happy with this product. Heats up quick, maintains the heat well, Works just as well as everyone says it does. Tried a couple of other much less expensive irons, and this one is far superior to those offerings . Im typically rather cynical about many costlier products as the returns diminish greatly on a lot of things past a certain price point, This is absolutely not the case with this Soldering Station and I would certainly not hesitate to buy other Hakko products as their tools are often lauded for their quality while also being typically less expensive than their competitors.
