Greater than one weekAwesome 1st Station for SMT soldering, solid build, easy to use and my Hakko Bundle came with a selection of tips for SMT work. I have no doubt this unit will do me as a hobbyist for a long time, I love the Hakko quality, was put off by the Fisher Price look, but its definitely a Tonka build. Have not played much with it yet other than soldering a SOIC with no difficulty, will tackle an SSOP soon. Beats my 20 year old weller hands down, you definitely need one of these to get into SMT properly at an affordable price.

> 3 dayIm an electronics technician by trade and love this soldering iron. I purchased this for my home lab. I decided on this iron because of other reviews and the price was within my budget. After many hours of use I am more than satisfied. It comes up to temp quickly, and maintains temp well when soldering non isolated ground plane pads. The tip selection is excellent for a kit. My only complaint would be that the tips take a little bit more time to swap out than Id like and would be a concern if used in a production setting. But for hobby use, it doesnt warrant knocking off a star. Overall, I couldnt be happier with this iron.

> 3 dayI was on the fence about this and the next model up. If your needs are basic and quick then the superior usability and size of this iron is best verses other Hakkos. Its built in presets makes the up arrow only not so bad. You just up arrow to the preset temp you want. You can modify those. Once set up its a one push affair to set the temp. The bad thing is the wand is too large for even my hulk hands to do fine work with. It should be impossible to do tiny resistors with. I never tried. The tip will tend to bottom out too much in temperature to do more than two pin component work. I compared this to the FX-951 at the same time. Just in soldering two wires with helping hands I could see the difference. Both irons will do that with ease. However it does show the big difference between them. Its not a lot of mass to heat in that case. If you solder an area of a PCB for more than 2 minutes and still struggle to finish, you needed to next model up or higher. If you dont with the 888D, then for sure buy this iron over the next one up. However it shouldnt encourage people by labeling it ESD safe. Im sure it is. But I really cant recommended it outside of some model RC planes and crafts.
