House of Dark Shadows (DVD)

I was not a fan of how they took Barnabus’s storyline Dark Shadows tv series where Julia helps him by creating a serum that allows him to be able to be out during the day, creating what I would call a poor man’s fanfic elsewhere story. SPOILERS. The retelling of this was basically to kill almost everyone off including Barnabus in such a unfeeling and ridiculous way. If you watched this without ever having watched the tv series it would have been just a dumb horror flick where none of the characters had any depth to them. Where none of the characters were like able where the death of Barnabus was ridiculously cliche. It wasn’t even cheesy fun for a bad horror film , it was just bad, sad and boring. I loved the tv show. This however was hot garbage. Why they had to make an alternate ending story was beyond me.

Any Dark Shadows fan would love this movie. I just wish the new Dark Shadows movie had been done by someone other than Tim Burton. Ive seen the trailer and it looks comedic. Dark Shadows was NOT a comedy. Although looking back on the original TV series it was somewhat campy. LOL! Id highly recommend this movie for all those who enjoy a good vamplire movie. Jonathan Frid made a wonderful Barnabas!

Bought it as a gift.

Someone said this is setting you up for a TV series and it must be easy looking back from now and saying that from our time but this is a great show shot in the typical 1960s quality, but that is the way it was, sorry, its a great show brings back good memories

i followed dark shadows since the very first episode that aired on tv, saw every movie they made from the tv serial and now i own my own house of dark shadows. if you like revisiting your teen years then order this original dark shadows and leave the new johnny depp version to todays kids ill stick with the original

Bloodier than the tv series - but not so much that it is off-putting. The music, the sets (real ones this time around), the acting (somewhat better than on tv) - all make for a very enjoyable movie. As a committed viewer of the original tv series, of course I saw this when it was first released. Could not get enough of this movie. Then had it on VHS but wore it out. Now on DVD. Yes! By all means get this video. You can then see the mannerisms that Johnny Depp picked up for his interpretation of Barnabas Collins. I like to watch this and the new Dark Shadows as a double bill.

if your a fan of the series dark shadows you will be in for a great big surprise when you first view house of dark shadows one thing is the movie is well made and so is the script well written. all the cast is wonderful especially kathryn leigh scott,joan bennett,jonathan frid,and the late louis edmonds. it has a lot of gothic look and even plays like a true hammer filmshould be when i was a child this film scared the he double hockey sticks outta me. even grayson hall is great i this movie dispite she dies before the film ends. nancy barret once again plays carolyn stoddard but has a rather misfortune to her,her cousin turning her into one of the undead,but miss barret is a great actress as well as the others i mantioned above,too many good actors in this film. the mansion that is in tarrytown new york is a great spooky place to film dark shadows even the cematary there is a great place too. house of dark shadows plays well and whenevr the missing scenes are found and restored hey it will be a better movie but once again the movie is great no matter what. dan curtis is a perfect director for this kind of movie he has since done a lot of other spooky films like night of dark shadows burnt offerings,trilogy of terror dracula(with jack palance),and tirlogy of terror 2 if you dont have house go rent or buy it ...john karlen is great too.
