LG Electronics 8X USB 2.0 Super Multi Ultra Slim Portable DVD+/-RW External Drive with M-DISC Support, Retail (Silver) GP60NS50

Our law office is constantly reading and writing CDs and DVDs, and because we work on Mac computers, currently have no CD drives on our machines. Previously, we had another portable CD burner and it was horrid. Sometimes the computer wouldnt recognize the drive, sometime it wouldnt read discs, sometimes it would fail in the middle of burning a disc. This LG USB portable external drive does NONE of those things! This little thing is reliable all the time, every day. If it cant read a disc, there is definitely something wrong with the disc. If something weird happens - which occasionally does, with discs - and it wont eject, its an easy fix. (Simply unplug it from the usb drive to cut the power, and then plug it back in and hit the front eject button and out comes the disc, every time.) In an office setting where we do not have one extra minute to waste dealing with systems that dont work well, this is a blessing. Highly recommend for either Mac or PC platforms. Lightweight and durable, it is well worth the reasonable price.

I was very confused by the post made by Blue. It said I would need to install the software. This comment set me on a wild-goose chase looking for a CD to install the software, which was not included. The LG webpage was very complicated and gave me no decent info. I ended up reading a comment somewhere else that it only works on LG computers (which I didnt know existed). Finally, after six months of giving up on trying to use it, I simply decided it must be plug-n-play. It worked perfectly after I downloaded and installed the VLC media software (free) that is needed if the pc does not have a DVD player of its own. Please make it clear what you mean by installing the software to people like me who have no clue! What a waste of time! I nearly threw it out because I thought it would never work with my HP computer! Bottom line - The DVD reader drive is plug-n-play! Just download VLC software for free (which is not the same as software to install the device) and youre good to go! Now that its installed, its beautiful!

This gp60ns50 seems like an excellent solution to modern tablets not having any optical drive. I got this to complement my Surface Pro 3 (SP3). I have a SP3 docking station also. I retired my desktop. The LG gp60ns50 drive DOES work with the SP3 but only when connected directly to the SP3. The gp60ns50 does NOT work when connected to the docking station. (FYI: I also have two Dell U2514 monitors connected to the docking port which I purchased from Amazon) The drive works fine. The look of the drive is nice, seems like a silver plastic cover which I chose over the black. I took off one star for the general quality of the drive, it seems quite light and fragile. I may go to five stars after a while, let me give it time. I only intend to use the drive very infrequently, so this ought not be a major issue.

A solid LG drive that will work with most any system. Instantly detected under Win 10 with no drivers required. My only complaint is the USB cable. Its too short. Just an extra 6 would give the unit much more mobility. Outside of that, this is a no brainer purchase if you need a portable DVD burner.

The cable provided had an unknown version of a USB terminal. It did not fit into any USB slot on my computer, and we finally decided it was a faulty-made cable intended as a motherboard power connection, but we never found a picture of one like it. Fortunately, I had a spare USB/mini-B cable in my vast collection, and it worked. Well, it didnt work until we figured out how to download DVD player software, which apparently computers dont come with anymore. Our Windows 11 Pro media player doesnt play DVDs. In all, we spent hours trying to get this $25 item to play a DVD, and finally it did. The next hurdle will be finding software to write DVDs and to write the M-discs. Seems like nothing is easy anymore.

this is my setup, a vizio tv which btw has lasted me 9 years already with no problem whatsoever. it is connected to my mid 2010 Mac mini (with cd drive) by hdmi my mac mini gave me no problems until the cd drive just stopped working, the computer works FINE but the drive just stopped and i suspect apple played a part in it. anyway i bought this little doozy and all i did was plug it into my mac mini via usb and BOOM. not a hitch, works like a dream. you have to program your settings to show where you want your cd’s/dvd’s to open. but for all you non techies, i am a 58 year old registered nurse that it took a long time to figure redial on my new phone. so YES EVEN YOU can hook this up to your system!!!!.

I have used various DVDs, and this one is great: Slim, fast and at mere $25 with free ship from Adorama (the seller): I have nothing to complain. Came in completely sealed, new condition, DVD itself has a thin, transparent protective film all around, with all manuals, 1 x USB cable and an installation DVD (which I did not have to use as my computer automatically did it. Thus, in my case, this was a plug-n-go situation.) I use this for my home office / personal use. I often burn CDs and DVDs, 30 to 100 at a time, containing documents to presentations to photos to videos. This is good enough for my use. Besides, the sleek and slim look is nice to look at on my work desk. The seller, Adorama did great job in shipping free and fast, delivering in 5 days from NJ to CA. Once I received, I can request invoice/warranty via email so that warranty would start when I get the item. Im very satisfied with the product and the seller.

This DVD player/writer is primarily designed to be portable and is best suited for notebooks and lap tops; however, there is no problem hooking it up to a desk top machine, and it comes with software for both PCs and Macs, working with a whole array of Windows operating systems from Windows 8.1 on down. This unit does not come with its own power cord, and a powered USB connection is required; it will not operate if plugged into a USB bank that is not powered. Plug it directly into a USB port on your computer or a powered USB bank, and youll be good to go.

It came quickly and a day earlier than predicted. It does feel cheap, and I couldnt believe it was that cheap till I realized there was plastic over it lol. Very lightweight but not very heavy duty. The cord is very thick, sturdy, and perfect in length though. I downloaded the stuff that it said to on the disc. I bought this mainly for playing my DVDs on my new laptop that does not have a disc drive. I plugged it in and it opened up the program it downloaded but as I kept hitting play it would not. But of course the other buttons/options worked just fine. I tried out several DVDs and this continued. So I downloaded VLC Media Player and then re-inserted the DVD, clicked it when the computer recognized the device and had it open/play the DVD with VLC and it worked. Windows media player did not work with this nor did trying to change the settings to have DVDs automatically play on media player. So if you experience this go ahead and find a program that will play DVDs but if you are more concerned with burning discs and such the program that comes with this is perfect for you and will do the job. IF YOUR COMPUTER DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE DEVICE: -Faulty cord/product -Check under your devices on the computer settings/panel. -Try putting in a disc with the USB still plugged in. -Mainly check your settings!!

The internal optical drive on my mid-2007 iMac was having problems reading disks. The drive would accept a disk and read it, but after a few minutes the drive would stop reading the disk. From what I read, others have had problems over time with the internal optical drives. This external drive worked fine with this older Mac. Plug and play. Using this external drive was a much easier and much less expensive alternative to replacing the internal optical drive. I cannot comment on the longevity of this product. I have only used it a few times, to retrieve photos from a DVD. So far it does what it is supposed to do.
