Now that all the new iMacs no longer have a disc drive, I had to find an external one but didnt want to pay a ridiculous amount for something that only gets used once in a while. I trust LG products and went with this one. The build quality is a bit light but I like that it works right out of the box without having to download any software or anything - just plug the sucker in and BOOM - that Ace of Bass cd goes right into my iTunes. Woot! Woot! Will it wear out at some point? - yeah but so does everything else computer related. And again, for the price, this thing is amazeballs. Simple, easy, and ready to go when I need it. Just like my husband.

I needed a new disc drive for my mac because the superdrive that I ordered kept ejecting certain CDs that I had. It was something where the drive couldnt register some CDs, but had no problem with others, and I didnt want to spend another $80 on a new superdrive that may have the same problem. I got this little guy in the mail today and, immediately, I plugged it in and popped in one of the discs that my superdrive couldnt read, and it was working like a charm right off the bat! Pros - lightweight - removable usb cord (can be replaced without replacing the whole device) - compatible with mac and windows - can be used with usb compatible televisions - so far, has been 100% functional - easy set-up - as quiet as my superdrive was Cons - lightweight design might make it easier to break - disc tray feels flimsy - needs installation disc for windows? - exterior retains fingerprint marks

Definitely NOT plug and play, like they claim. I am not tech savvy at all. So, this wasnt easy to use, first time out. Music CDs did play right away. DVDs, did not. The program suite this comes with, does have a media player, but you have to pay FORTY DOLLARS for the upgrade to use it. If you dont have the suite installed, it sends you to the Microsoft Store, every time you insert a DVD. So, I tried about a half of a dozen free apps from the store. In short, they were all garbage. I then went to the web, to try VLC, which Ive used in the past. I clicked download, and it directed me to the Microsoft Store, and I installed the app. It didnt work. I tried RealPlayer, and couldnt figure out how to get that to work, either. I did some more reading, and decided to try VLC again, but this time, not downloading the Microsoft Store version. It works fine. Ive noticed that with other apps as well, Microsoft offers. A lot of them do not work as good as the web version. So, in the end, the web version of VLC media player, will allow this to play DVDs. (Im running Windows 10 BTW) As far as burning CDs and DVDs, I didnt buy it for that, so Im not even going to try!

This was perfect for what I bought it for. I basically wanted to transfer some music I had on my computer to be played on a laptop at another location.

I needed an external drive to go with our new MacBook Pro and wanted to stay with the brushed aluminum look. While it doesnt quite match the same look as the MacBook its pretty close and for the amount Im really going to use it close is ok with me. The outercase is all plastic which makes it really lightweight. It worked immediately when I plugged it in and didnt have to load any software or anything like that. A true plug and play device with the MacBook. My only nit with it so far is that it does get noisy when the disc is spinning at full speed. Because it is all plastic there isnt much weight to it so it vibrates. Ive ended up just resting my hand or finger on it just to put a little weight on it to stop the brief vibrating. Overall though, Im satisfied for now especially for a fraction of the price of the Superdrive.

Not all DVD drives will work with M-Discs (the archival long-life discs), but this is one that works well. My new Dell computer does not support M-Discs, and I didnt want to keep my old (slow) Windows 7 computer simply for use with M-Discs (also an LG drive), so at this price I decided to go ahead and purchase it. It works very well. Note that its not the highest speed, and it uses an older (slightly larger) USB plug (the older USB mini, not micro plug), but the main USB plug (standard full size) will work with virtually any computer, so this is highly functional. And my wifes new laptop doesnt have an optical drive (many dont anymore), so she now also has DVD/CD capability for her laptop since this is so easily portable. Reviews on this particular drive at tech sites are excellent, specifically for use with M-Discs, which was my main purpose in buying it. But its great for general DVD/CD use for any computer that doesnt have an optical drive.

My sons hard drive crashed on his recently (~1 year old) built gaming computer. To save space, minimize power consumption and heat production we decided to go with a Memo**x external drive (of course he had to have it right away and we payed out the wazoo at a box store for it). We loaded the OS, put the drive away and had ~ a year of play time. Fast forward to Feb and his hard drive crashes. No big deal we buy a new HD, hook up the Memo**x drive and .........., nothing, other than some lights and sounds of a DVD drive failing, nothing. This time we decided to look on Amazon for a more cost effective alternative and came across the 20 something dollar drive, plugged it in and it immediately did what we needed it to do. We boxed it up, put the computer back together and got back to business. Hmmmm, I started thinking.....I wonder if it will work twice (unlike the Memo**x), pulled it out of the box, plugged it in and YES!!!!!!! it worked.

Excellent product. I connected the drive and used it to install the included DVD driver and software -- no problems. Next step, I tried to play a DVD movie and found out I needed something other than Windows Media Player. LG chat support gave me the link for the free open source VLC Media Player. The movie DVD then worked, menu and all, just like on my home theater system. I am now listening to a music CD while writing this review. Bottom line, this GP60NS50 slim portable DVD writer works perfectly for what I needed: installing software DVDs and playing a/v CDs and DVDs in my office. I havent actually tested any of the CD or DVD burning features, and probably never will, so look for other reviews if that is important to you.

Okay I literally just received this in the mail. Before I continue... if you are wanting to know anything about the dvd WRITER part, I will have no information for you, since thats not at all why I bought it :( I will post an update after using it more but for now, let me just say this: -I bought this for my new MacBook Air, which obviously doesnt have a built-in optical drive. -I REALLY only wanted this in order to export songs from cds onto my iTunes, since Im one of those people who STILL buys cds to support certain artists. And also to maybe watch a dvd here and there in my bedroom since I only have a tv in my living room. (But probably not often.) -This one in particular had the highest rating over all the other drives for this price range, including the ones that mentioned nothing about being a dvd writer and were just plain ol external cd/dvd drives. -I went through allllllll the reviews, like I usually do, and noticed that people said I could do the things I wanted to with it, so I went ahead and just got it despite a lot of the negative or mixed reviews. -I literally opened the box, took it out of its packaging, plugged it into my computer, and loaded a cd in it..... it IMMEDIATELY popped up in my iTunes with a pop-up that asked me if I wanted to import the songs. I did and a few minutes later, my songs were on iTunes :) Yay! -I did notice how loud it is during the importing part, but since this is all I am really using it for, I could care less. It just sounds like a computer thats working. The sound went away completely once it was done importing and was just sitting in the drive. -After that, I switched the cd with a dvd.... Once again, the movie literally just popped up and started playing right away. The sound from the movie COMPLETELY drowned out the loud sound the driver makes. I couldnt hear it at all and it was just the MGM Lion roaring and whatever other sounds come after that part at the beginning of a movie. -I am not that tech savvy so I didnt do a dang thing prior to this. I actually have hardly anything installed on my MacBook since its still very new. So thats genuinely all it took to get my cds on iTunes and to play a dvd. Im not even sure what program it used to play the dvd, but obviously something that is already on the MacBook. Once again, Ill post an update after Ive used it a few times or more time has passed by, but so far its EXACTLY what I was looking for. SO glad I didnt get discouraged by the negative reviews!!
