It came quickly and a day earlier than predicted. It does feel cheap, and I couldnt believe it was that cheap till I realized there was plastic over it lol. Very lightweight but not very heavy duty. The cord is very thick, sturdy, and perfect in length though. I downloaded the stuff that it said to on the disc. I bought this mainly for playing my DVDs on my new laptop that does not have a disc drive. I plugged it in and it opened up the program it downloaded but as I kept hitting play it would not. But of course the other buttons/options worked just fine. I tried out several DVDs and this continued. So I downloaded VLC Media Player and then re-inserted the DVD, clicked it when the computer recognized the device and had it open/play the DVD with VLC and it worked. Windows media player did not work with this nor did trying to change the settings to have DVDs automatically play on media player. So if you experience this go ahead and find a program that will play DVDs but if you are more concerned with burning discs and such the program that comes with this is perfect for you and will do the job. IF YOUR COMPUTER DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE DEVICE: -Faulty cord/product -Check under your devices on the computer settings/panel. -Try putting in a disc with the USB still plugged in. -Mainly check your settings!!

My laptops no longer have optical drives, but occasionally, I need to show a DVD in class or load software from a DVD or add music to iTunes. This works perfectly on both my Mac and my Windows laptops.

This will, in fact, work on a Mac: Some reviews and answers suggest this is not Mac-compatible; however, heres the skinny: This unit is plug and play, meaning no setup is required. (Note: The software CD that comes with it is NOT necessary for use; its just a free media suite.) The problem lies in the fact that, when a BLANK disc is inserted, the drive doesnt appear in Finder, which is no doubt confusing. (A disc with content will appear normally.) One method to confirm it is recognized is to go to About This Mac > Storage. To burn a file to a blank disc: Control-click your file and select Burn your_file to Disc — a popup box should give you the option to select the external drive. NOTE: Samsung no longer supports external optical drives. No tech support, no warranty claims via manufacturer.

I needed this disk drive because my Mac Air doesnt have one and the printer I ordered for college required a disk to install the software. I got it today (was pleasantly surprised with the Sunday delivery esp since I ordered yesterday--thanks Prime!) and tested it by putting a movie in. The first time it didnt work, but I opened and closed the drive and it worked fine the second time. I also just burned a CD and tested it in my car and it sounds perfectly fine. The burn time could have been shorter, but as my dad pointed out when I was buying this, it does use only a 2.0 usb and can only write to 8x speed, which is perfectly fine to me given the affordable price point. There didnt seem to be any problems loading the movie. I was surprised how light it is, and that is an additional perk. It does get a little noisy, especially when burning the CD, but I expected that and it doesnt bother me. Overall, Im very pleased with so far but I may update my review upon more use if the performance worsens. But of course I hope it wont!

After having issues with using my internal DVD burner on my desktop I still needed some way to burn somethings off and read some disc. So why not replace the internal DVD burner, you might ask. There is nothing actually wrong with it, is why. Its a long complicated story. Ignoring that lets talk about the burner. Only needs the single USB slot, that is as long as your USB slot can supply enough power to it, which mine can. The portable devices with 2 USB, one being pig tailed off the other, are for the rare cases when thats needed for that device it doesnt mean you always need it. I do wish the USB cable was bit longer. Its only about 2 feet long. Mini-USB on the device end. Moving on, it uses a tray instead of slot loaded. Ive never really cared for slot load devices. The tray is just like what you would get a laptop where the disc snaps into the tray, understandable being as slim as it is. The burn times are on par with what my internal burner would do: 4.3GB in about 10mins, a bit more than 20mins if I add in the verify step which is a good idea most times. Anyone looking to get this for the intent of using it as a DVD player for your TV; DONT! Thats not what its meant for. Its meant to be used with a computer, not a TV. While yes Im sure itll work with some TVs that doesnt mean itll work with all of them. If you want a mini DVD player for your TV then go looking for one thats designed for that. LGs website list this as TV Connectivity which is a bit misleading since its just a USB device. Im sure it works fine on most LG TVs, I cant get to the ports of my some old LG LCD TV to see if it works with it. It doesnt work on my Samsung but thats not the fault of the burner as much as it is the TV itself. My point is, dont knock any star(s) just because it doesnt work on your TV. I would also like people to stop giving it a bad review because of the installation CD and cant find drivers for it. There Are No Drivers For This Device! This is simply plug&play. The installation CD is for installing the, completely optional, Cyberlink free software. If youre having problems with getting this to work, its not because its missing drivers. Even since Windows95, Ive never known an optical drive that required drivers for it to work, not including USB. If youre on a Mac or Linux or Windows XP and newer, then its just plug&play. Speaking of the Cyberlink software. Ive seen people knocking off stars because of it. The Cyberlink software is offered for people that need that sort of thing. If you cant get the software to work for whatever reason, then go complain to them. Its LGs fault or the drives fault. Rate the product not the optional software.

Actually it plays great, when you have the proper software, apps, or computer configurations. I dont want to give a bad review because there may be something offset in my computers configurations. Has anyone else experienced this? First, the video player software which came with this LG unit is Cyberlinks PowerDVD 14, but only as a 30-day trial. When the 30 days were over, they were asking for around $60 to purchase it! So instead i went to the Windows Store to download some of the free video player apps, including VLC (which was recommended by another reviewer for Windows 8 OS), and Media Player Elite, and others i tested out. None of them would play! They wont even read the dvd, as if its not there, except that the title does show up when the computer asks which app to use to play it on. But videos played real well during the Cyberlink DVD trial period, except for one time having to figure out an odd setting about reading software, which was preventing a dvd from being read. (No other reviews that i found back in January mentioned this limited trial period.) If it has to do with a configuration setting on this laptop, i know nothing about all that. I even talked to Microsofts customer service, went through a trouble-shooting routine, and they didnt know what to tell me (except to purchase extra assistance through some kind of support program). The laptop: i had just bought this new HP Stream 13 from the Microsoft Store, so without all the junkware. Came with the Windows 8.1 (which is a pain really, i dont know what they were thinking when they came up with this version!). Maybe the Cyberlink software could have changed the configuration of some video-playing mechanism on my computer? I cant find any help from anywhere that is relevant to whats going on. So i am asking if anyone has any suggestions, or had encountered the same sort of thing? When dvds did play during that trial month, it worked real well and i would have rated it 5 stars. Also because its so thin and lightweight, its so easy to carry around, and great for airplane travel. But for now, i cant play dvds any more, which was one of the main reasons i got it! I dont know what to try next...

Worked out if the box with my Windows 10 PC. Unlike most external drives it does not show up until you insert a disc in the drive and it disappears as soon as the disc is ejected.

This DVD drive worked perfectly with the plug and play aspect of the drive. Came with USB cable and Cyberlink Media Suite 10 for burning CD, DVD and playing CD. The only thing that it didnt come with was a DVD Player for playing DVDs, this was corrected by obtaining a Free DVD player software on the internet, this allowed for DVDs to be played and played very well. This was bought for friend with Windows 7 Starter OS, and small laptop he got from Verizon. I helped him set everything up, since he is disabled since he was 2 years old from being hit by car. This is perfect for him, and I am sure he will get good use out of it while he is in the hospital. Thanks LG for a quality product that I have given a 5 stars.

I began hunting around for a decent-quality USB CD Drive after opting for a desktop case that did not include a standard CD Drive slot. I came across this model, and opted to purchase due to positive reviews. The drive does not disappoint. I do not use it very often since it is rare I have a need for CDs, but it does everything it was designed to do. I have played movies, burned bootable ISO disks, etc. You name it - this drive does it. Solid overall construction. It comes with a USB cable that plugs into the back of the unit. The only quality some may see as a negative is the sound. It is not exactly a quiet unit. But as a buyer, I recommend you look last this piece in favor of the great build quality. It is a CD drive - it is supposed to make noise. Noise aside - 5 stars, would buy again.
