Nintendo Switch Pro Controller

Greater than one weekTried a highly rated 3rd party controller 1st to see if it would do the job at a lower price point. It was ok, joysticks and buttons felt clunky and cheap. Within a week it had drifting issues. Returned it for this official Nintendo controller and the difference is very obvious. Connects immediately, buttons and joysticks feel really smooth and of a much higher quality. Buy nice, or buy twice. I would definitely recommend this and I might buy another as my joy cons that came with the Switch are having drift issues and are uncomfortable to use with my giant hands.

> 3 dayWe have a total of 3 pairs of joycons in our family and have always enjoyed using them. Their size fits perfectly for us and are useable with the grips. I decided to get myself this Nintendo version of the pro controller since I play some RPGs and figured it would go well and maybe bring back some good vibes from my youth. I say that since this is built like a normal console controller. Very similar to the Xbox. The controller is larger then the joycons and the placement of buttons is awkward at first and took some time getting used to it. It feels great though and overtime it’s become my preferred controller. I wish however that it wasn’t so noisy. Every top face button pressed makes a loud sound. (I play usually at night when everyone is asleep) I enjoyed the joy cons because they weren’t as loud and I can separate my hands while relaxing on the couch or bed. If you already have joycons, and enjoy them, this is more of a luxury piece. I have not experienced analog drift yet with these though while I have on my joycons.

Greater than one weekThe Switch Pro controller is an amalgamation of designs such as the Xbox 360 controller and the Dualshock 2. Having an outer ring, the analog sticks feel similar to the Dualshock 4s as well. The buttons are flat, as opposed to the convex buttons on microsoft controllers, which makes this more comfortable for me to press repeatedly. The back buttons are digital instead of triggers, which makes it more suitable to instant actions. I think this is the ideal controller for Bayonetta, and games like it. The D-Pad is outstanding given how generic in application this controller is. It is very slightly elevated in the center, meaning the hat switch is easy to rock back and forth. It doesnt hurt my thumb very much compared to a lot of previous Nintendo designs, but you may develop a callus if playing fighting games frequently. The controllers large button design can make it feel a bit clunky with some games, particularly in comparsion to playstation controllers. The placement of the D-Pad also is a bit unfortunate for games where you might want to use a claw grip on the left hand. Overall, this is a passable current generation controller to use when your switch is docked, certainly an improvement over joycons.

> 3 dayWhen I picked up my Switch a few years ago, I picked up a pro controller to go with it. Why? Because I knew that I would use it on my TV a lot, plus with bigger games like Zelda Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey, I knew I would enjoy them much more with a standard controller. The pro controller reminds me a little of an Xbox controller, but a little bulkier. However, after time, it really fits your hands well. Its high quality and again, awesome to use if the Switch is either your main gaming console or your only gaming console (which it is for me). I also love it for games like Super Smash Bros, DOOM, Witcher 3, Skyrim and other titles. I would say, though, with the expensive asking price, if you use your Switch mostly in handheld mode or if you are only a casual gamer, or do most of your major gaming on another console/PC, then Id probably pass on picking one of these up.

> 3 dayIn my opinion, despite its relatively high price for a controller, its the definitive way to enjoy your Switch on a TV or monitor. For people with big hands, youll be able to play it perfectly fine and comfortably versus with the awkward positioning of the normal Switch Joycons. This controller is also very rugged, has a reliable battery life, and good connection distance.

> 3 dayThe Switch Pro Controller works pretty well, but I wish there was a hard-off, as it will turn itself on in travel and if you are using your Switch in handheld mode and someone or something messes with the Pro Controller, it will hijack your game. This also can prematurely drain the battery. It is comfortable to hold on my medium to large sized hands and a bit daintier than the replaceable battery version by the same brand. Charging is convenient with the same cable I would use for the Switch. Can be used plugged in. After a while of use thumb caps tried to pop off. I make sure they are seated well before a session of play.

> 3 dayNot much to say here, if you play anything other than Mario party on the switch, you probably want/need this controller. Putting your joycons into a controller frame just doesn’t feel that good in your hand. Great quality, no connection issues, and battery lasts a long while given that you don’t accidentally touch any of the keys and cause it to search/pair all the time.

> 3 daySo we just got these the other day, so this isnt a review on their longevity. However, we absolutely love these controllers in comparison to the joy cons. These are SOOO much better. Weve been playing Age of Calamity in 2 player mode, and it was a huge pain and no fun to do with the Joy cons. These controllers are worlds better. They are a little big compared to a PS4 controller, but a better shape than the combined joycons. They have a nice heft to them, and theyre rechargeable. A lot of the 3rd party controllers for the Switch werent rechargeable, and most, if not all, were not compatible with amiibos. If amiibos matter to you, it might be worth noting that the PowerA controllers and other 3rd party controllers probably arent compatible. As for their charge, we charged them straight out of the box, played with them about every night for the past week and they still have a charge to them. I cant really quantify that in hours, but they definitely seem to last longer than our PS4 controllers (which are a couple years older to be fair). Last point of note is the button mapping. Trying to play Age of Calamity with 1 joycon per person, the buttons on each controller is limited, and the button mapping was confusing and aggravating. Having a controller or complete set of Joycons per person is really the best way to play, and its definitely less aggravating. Im not the best gamer, so when the button layout became too confusing with the joycons, I just ignored the confusing buttons (which in this particular game included the button to heal yourself). Last points of note is that they do come with their own charging cords, which plug right into the side of the Switch docking station for easy charging. They are a Type C cord, so most phone charges would probably work as well. And they dont have a spot to plug in headphones or a mic, but neither do the joycons.
