Initially, the drive would not detect the presence of Verbatim BD-R disks. Fought with the drive rotating from a USB 3.1 to a USB 2.0 and back again. Posted here and suggested that I try a different brand of disk, and that worked. I then tried the Verbatim disks again and through a process of trial and error that the first few disks in the spindle were defective for some reason. Even on a 3.1 port, the drive seems a little slow, but it is acceptable - minimally. As for the free CyberLink, forget it. There are several words I could use, but recommend an independent burner or one that is supplied with video creating software, such as Pinnacle, or similar. Thanks to those who responded to my question.

It plays DVDs and CDs just fine (I havent tried it with Blu-Ray yet). Its compact and easily portable, fitting nicely in my laptop case. The cable that came with it was too long for use on a small desk so I replaced with a 6 cable I bought here. The carrying case that came with the ODD, while excellent quality, was enormous, far too large to fit in my laptop bag (and it is a large bag!). While I cant use the case with my laptop bag, I did find it handy for storing extra cables in a drawer. Fortunately, the case was a freebie (other vendors were selling the same ODD without the case for the same price) and Im used to having to replace cables that come with peripherals (they are always either too long, too short, or just poor quality) so I didnt take any stars off for them (especially since I wound up using the case elsewhere). Update: It works just fine with regular Blu-Ray. There is a later model that will also work with 4k Blu-Ray.

I admit that I used this fairly frequently, but I expected more than six months of use after paying $120. Purchased in May, and by November while the drive itself is still recognized, the drive mechanism appears to have burned out, since discs wont spin and not recognized. Installed latest firmware and reinstalled drivers, but nothing worked. A complete waste of money.

I bought this to rip my DVD and Bluray collection to my Plex server. It works great. No issues or complaints.

I have had this drive for a few months now and am still as happy with it as the day I got it. I have used it to read CD’s, DVD’s and Blue Ray. My iMac running Catalina operating system has had no problem with the drive at all. So far, the only thing I have not done is burn a Blue Ray yet (no reason to) I primarily use the drive to read disks so I can digitize them for my digital movie library and have a backup of the movie. All software I’ve been able to use is open Freeware and has been seamless.

The size and the fact it came with a protective case pleased me most.
