I had these at the same time as the 559...I decided to try to buy something I could consider good enough, knowing there had to be better but also knowing there was a lot worse out there as well. Growing up, a buddy of mine had a pair of Koss headphones that came with a pretty nice walkman and I always loved them. He bought a pair of large pad (orange color) Sennheiser and I was jealous of both I guess because this was the brand that came to mind. Anyway, I paid $129 for the 559 and I got these on sale for $199 and not wanting to keep the ones that were supposed to be be better instead of the ones that actually were better for me, I played them both a lot on the same tracks in the week I had them and I ended up with these. They seemed clearer and cleaner and had a better overall punch to them. I doubt you could be disappointed with them, you would have to be in the headphone elite to even make an argument against them I think. They are pretty comfortable and play as well loud as they do low. Being open back, they do let a lot more sound in but for most of us that have to have the listening area away from the wife anyway, that is not a problem lol. As a thrifty person myself, I recommend saving the few more dollars, waiting the few more days or weeks or whatever and upping the cash for these. At $199, if you find anything better I would be very, very...very surprised.

I just received it today and been trying it for the past couple of hours. Now Im not an expert in sound nor am I an audiophile as this is my first audiophile-grade headphone. I, however, was able to immediately tell the difference in the amount clarity and detail I hear in tracks with this phone and to me this is just is mind-blowing, also the ability to clearly hear so many sounds in a given track is something very new to me and its so satisfying, I LOVE IT! Ive just watched a movie and wow! I feel like Im with them in the room! The sound is so clear and alive. I understand from some of the reviews I read that to many of the audiophiles out there, this headphone may not be that good, but to a wannabe audiophile like me, this is a mind-blowing experience! I proudly announce that Im now an audiophile and Im never going back!

I got these headphones as a upgrade to my Bose Soundtrues I got 3 plus years ago. I heard about Sennheiser open headphones being one of the audiophile standards when wanting great audio, and I read lots of reviews on different ones on RTings.com. So when I decided to venture into the so-called realm of audiophiles, I wanted to do so without breaking the bank. So I looked and looked until I came across these Sennheiser HD599s. These are an upgrade to the HD598, a very popular premium, entry level open back headphone. However, one of the complains about the 598s is that it lacks in bass, this upgrade is supposed to correct that.

After reading all the glowing reviews I thought I would give these a try as an alternate to my B&O H6 headphones. Though the sound is not terrible given the price point, I was a little disappointed and ended up returning them. Im not an audiophile so I dont have the expertise to describe correctly by any means,, but my impression was that the bass was sloppy and heavy, and the mid and high notes were not very clear, the bass would kind of wash over and muddle the other sounds. Though I could make out individual instrument tones, there was just something lacking in the clarity, not super crisp and authentic compared to my B&Os. As far as build quality, though primarily plastic, they seem solid, Im sure they will last through heavy use and theyre comfortable. The velour ear pads were a little strange at first, but soft, and the ear cups are huge.

Okay, these headphones are good I had a pair of Audio Technica ATH-GLD3, and while those were perfectly good. These headphones just sound way cleaner and smoother I would highly recommend these. However these are the most expensive headphones and the best headphones I have owned to date so take my review with a grain of salt because I have never experienced the Sennheiser HD 800, 700 or 600 series of headphoens.

EDIT: 10/2021 - I now have these AND HD800S...I was ready to sell the 599 again but decided to pick up the Apple USB-C to 3.5mm dongle to see if there would be any improvement. After connecting these to the dongle...wow, big difference! No, its not as good as either my HD6XX or HD800S running through $1.5k of gear...but at $108 for a complete package (with the dongle) its damn good. A very popular question for this headphone is whether or not an amp is needed. Personally, Im still indecisive on that, but I do recommend a DAC of some sort to clean up the signal from your computer/phone/etc., the $8 Apple USB-C to 3.5mm dongle would be a great option.

Powered by Sennheiser"s proprietary transducer technology for truly excellent sound performance, the open back HD 599 delivers impressively natural spatial performance. Topping Sennheiser"s 500 series, the full sized premium headphone offers near audiophile levels of sound quality and exceptional wearing comfort thanks to the large ear cups and soft replaceable ear pads. Finished in a distinctive Ivory color, with matte metallic detailing and a brown stitched headband, it is a great choice for those wishing to enjoy entertainment with sophisticated sound, design and build quality.
