Snappy Tools Plug Cutter, 3/8

> 24 hourAfter reading many poor reviews of other plug cutters, I decided to spend the extra few dollars for this one. Im glad I did, as it seems to do the job well. I cut a couple dozen plugs out of Butternut (havent cut anything hard with it yet), and I got pretty clean results. I gave it 4/5 stars only because it came covered in a black sooty coating, which was a bit of a mess. I know its to protect from rust or whatever while in storage, but an oil or wax coating would be nicer. Not a big deal.

> 24 hourWorks great. Perfect match to normal countersink bit for #8 screws. Im actually mostly using this cutter to cut plugs all the way through 1/4 Baltic Birch plywood which creates a nice match to plug countersunk screw holes in thicker Baltic Birch plywood. With face side of source board pointed down on sacrificial board and drill press set to just touch the sacrificial base board, the plugs spin out nicely. (Im too lazy to cut plugs partially into the source board then chisel or trim them out, plus that probably wouldnt work well for plywood anyway).

> 24 hourcuts a good usable plug.

> 24 hourThis thing just chews up wood. Plugs are not the advertised dimension or even useable.

> 24 hourNot very sharp and will jump around. Even with a drill press, drill table and an oak wood block very tightly clamped down, it jumped and danced as soon as it entered the wood, creating inaccurately shaped plugs. Basically worthless for hard wood. Might try on softwood for next project, or I might just spend the 5 bucks and buy a pack of plugs online.

> 24 hourCuts nice plugs. Use to cut face grain plugs, which look much better.

> 24 hourThe style of cutter basically sucks and I dont even think this is a very good example of this style of cutter. The geometry in the sharpening are all wack plus I dont even think the material is that good. On the other hand I need a grand total of eight plugs And Im not a professional woodworker so odds are that Im not going to be let down by this thing too badly. Because I dont plan on using a lot.

> 24 hourProbably cuts a good plug for hardwood but absolutely blows for softwood don’t bother.

> 24 hourmust be used in a solid drill press for optimum results... If tried with a hand drill, it will dance all over the place because the tips are very sharp and travel before penetrating.

> 24 hourDoes cut a 3/8” plug cleanly and with a nice tapered end if you drive it all the way down. I’ve cut about 30-35 plugs in hard sapele and I have had no problems at al. I use my drill press on the slow speed- that’s important. And it cuts the hard wood well. It does heat up some after about our plugs I stick it in some water and start again.
