Second one. Takes watercolour washes extremely well. Pages do not buckle. A pleasure to use pleine aire.

These used to be my favorite sketchbooks, new one delivered today, no longer has slick black hard cover. looks more bluish/almost purple, textured and funny feeling ...Still a nice sketchbook and a really good price, but the cover has changed, the look and feel is different. Im keeping this one, but will probably look at other options before purchasing again. Also, photo of product as of right now (1.13.13) is of the old (i.e. my preferred) cover design. New one has a band (not a sticker) and the different color/texture situation.

The Strathmore 400 Series Hard Bound Sketch/Notebook 8.5x11.5 and 5.25x8.5 is ideal for a graduation present, especially for one going on to college.

Thinner than I thought to be honest and it looks like theres all kinds of white smudges on the back cover of the one I received that wont come off. Never buying again.

Da ich mit der Qualität der günstigeren Strathmore Serien unzufrieden war, wollte ich etwas Hochwertigeres ausprobieren. Hauptsächlich nutze ich Aquarell. Die Verarbeitung ist recht gut, der Einband und die Bindung sehr stabil - allerdings kann das Skizzenbuch nur selten wirklich flach liegen, oft sind die Seiten zu weit nach innen verklebt, man kann sie aber vorsichtig auseinanderziehen. Was mich vor allem sehr beeindruckt hat, ist die Qualität des Papiers. Die Leimung ist sehr gleichmäßig - es gibt beim Arbeiten mit flüssigen Medien also keine nervigen weißen Flecken oder ungewollte Muster. Man merkt sofort, dass es sich wirklich um Cotton handelt, denn das Papier ist extrem wiederstandsfähig. So kann man ohne größeren Schäden auch starke Bleistiftspuren wegradieren und Lifting-Techniken benutzen. Für Aquarell, zumindest für mich, ist das Skizzenbuch eher weniger geeignet, da die Seiten doch sehr dünn sind. Wenn man vor dem Malen die Seiten festklammert, hält sich das Wellen in Grenzen und es trocknet auf jeden Fall fast komplett flach - aber ich bevorzuge einfach dickeres Papier, das sich gar nicht wellt. Außerdem ist die Leimung doch recht stark, was die Farbe viel herumrutschen lässt, bevor sie ins Papier sickert, und sie löst sich leicht wieder an, wenn man mit einer neuen Schicht drübergeht. Aber nachdem ich nun das gesamte Skizzenbuch gefüllt habe, hauptsächlich mit Aquarell, war dies kein unumgehnbares Problem. Man muss sich an jedes neue Papier gewöhnen. Ideal geeignet ist das Skizzenbuch für Gouache oder kleine Acrylskizzen, sowie Tinte/Tusche. Auch wenn Baumwolle nicht wirklich notwendig für Blei- oder Farbstift ist, ist es doch ein sehr luxuriöses Gefühl, darauf zu zeichnen. Alkoholmarker funktionieren mit dem Papier nicht gut. Drücken sofort durch und ein gleichmäßiger Farbauftrag ist sogut wie unmöglich. Fürs Skizzieren reicht es aber. Wer also viele verschiedene Medien benutzt und ein Allrounder-Skizzenbuch sucht, ist hier auf jeden Fall gut bedient!

Love this journal. Lots of pages. Nice looking book. Can use it horizontally or vertically. Great for en plain air. Paper is nice.

LOOOOVE THIS! I am addicted to Moleskin journals, but they can get expensive. I wanted to try something new, but worried about the quality of the new journal I chose. I shouldnt have been - this is fantastic! The pages are nice and thick, keeping media from seeping through. I love drawing on this paper with my mechanical pencils - the lead lays down beautifully, and its so easy to erase without leaving stray marks. The only (very minor) complaint I have is that the lead smudges a little on the paper. I didnt realize that was even happening until I had to erase a good sized area. It isnt bad - like I said, I hadnt even noticed prior to erasing - but I also wasnt using the journal in the best light. (Yeah - Im guessing that drawing in bed late at night probably reduced my smudge detection.) I still love this journal and am thoroughly enjoying my time with it. Ive used lead, ink (pen and Dr Ph Martins Hydrus), watercolors, acrylics, and ink from a stamp pad. I am really impressed at what this journal has been able to take - and I look forward to throwing many more products at it. I really love this hardbound little beauty!

Really like this journal. It held up to a lot of mixed media fluids and water.

El cuaderno no decepciona, no es caro y tiene buena presencia. El papel es de 300 gr, pero no lleva ni un gramo de algodón. La reseña no es engañosa porque en ningún momento habla de la composición del papel. No obstante, para los distraídos como yo, es bueno saber que el papel es de pura celulosa, lo que no es lo ideal para pintar con acuarela.

This is definitely a great quality product for an excellent price. 140 lb./300gsm2 paper easy for beginners and intermediate watercolor painting. Takes a really good amount of water when laying down multiple layers of watercolor paint. Lifts colors well, & folds flat for painting. This is definitely my favorite standard sketchbook for watercolor painting or Plein Air painting.
