    Greater than one week

Like many other reviewers I love the fan but the foam blocks used to seal the window are a bad idea, badly designed, and they get filthy when you touch them. This fan should have the standard bellows that all other window fans have. Sad that such a well designed product has such an obvious and basic flaw. The fan itself is awesome, sleek, quiet and really moves a lot of air. The remote is nice but you have to push a button twice to get the fan to wake up before it accepts a command. The fan does not seal up in a closed position when its off, but you cant see much light coming through it and I dont feel it leaks much air into the room when its off.

Contrary to what some reviewers claim, this fan absolutely works with screened windows. It is super easy to install and works well - we have one in our master bedroom and it pulls a nice breeze through. I only wish it offered a higher volume of air (more CFM), and were Alexa-compatible. I see that there was a smart variant of this fan available from Vornado and I hope they bring it back. However it isnt perfect; the power cable comes out of the chassis at the bottom of the unit and interferes with the mounting pad, so you need to resort to crushing the cable. I suspect that after a sufficiently large number of install/removal cycles this does present a risk of short and possible fire hazard. The exit point for the power cord really should be moved completely away from the mounting pad. I am deducting two stars for this because there will inevitably be some person who will not notice this issue and will sever the cord causing a short in their house. This is a design and manufacturing flaw which should by all rights result in a recall of this fan. Since I am aware of the issue and take care to hold the cord out of the way and will drill a new hole and reroute the cord if/when the insulation starts to show signs of fatigue/wear, I am comfortable using the fan, but many people would never even notice the cord is being stressed at the mounting pad on the sash, and run into problems.

This is half an inch too wide for my windows which I realize is not a flaw exactly but... why? Even 12,000 BTU air conditioners usually top out at 24” wide but this little fan is 26. Many pre-war homes have smaller windows so theyre leaving out a lot of potential customers. I ended up buying the Sharper Image one but their newer model is also 26” so I guess Im out of luck if and when it breaks.

By far this is the best window fan I have ever owned. Quiet enough to run all night while sleeping, sets up easily, has multiple speeds, reverses direction with a touch of a button, looks good and even has a nice simple remote. Another overlooked feature is that when turned off, the fan mechanism rotates to a closed position to block air coming in or out. I have seen other reviews say it costs too much but you get what you pay for. This fan blows away the competition.

I bought this about 2 years ago and its still going strong. My upstairs neighbors would always smoke cigarettes, marijuana, and other chemicals that would seep into and stink up my small apartment and make me nauseous. I would try opening all my windows, sealing vents, and running fans, but it never helped. After researching net airflow, it seemed that my apartment always had a negative airflow and was more likey to attract air. I figured that maybe I need a good intake fan to create a positive airflow. I bought this without checking dimensions carefully, but it wedges perfectly in a vertical orientation one of my windows (after modifying the adhesive foam strip location). I know the vertical orientation is supposedly not supported, but all the windows here slide horizontally. After two years, the intake mode is still able to create a strong positive air flow that completely keeps the smelly neighbor fumes out.

Let me preface this by saying that I have 3 different Vornado fans that I LOVE. And Ive had 2 of them for 3 years and 1 of them for 2 years. This brand is to be trusted — with fans. This product unfortunately missed the mark for me. It is sleek, and the design is beautiful — by far the most beautiful transom fan on the market. However, this product in actual use is just . . . not there. 1) The amount of air it moves is not that much. You can barely feel any air moving unless your hand is within 20 inches or so of the vent. 2) The thermostat is quite useless. This fan was in the window of my bedroom RIGHT by my head. I wanted it in my bedroom, because I like to sleep very cold, and for some reason my apartment TRAPS heat like nowhere Ive ever lived. So one of the first nights I have this transom fan, it was a very cold, and I set it to 60. The room was probably 72-74 or so. Well after a few minutes, it turned off, saying it was 60 in the room. I asked my echo (also in the same room) what the temperature of the room was, and it said it was 71.6 . . . and it felt like it. I knew it wasnt anywhere near 60, but Vornado did. So I had to turn it down to 45 to get it to stay on. So the auto-on and auto-off features are really useless. 3) The lights on the front of the unit do dim as it says they do, except for the power light which is basically a beacon in a very dark room. I found that really annoying. I put a piece of black gaffers tape over it to fix it — still something I dont think I should have had to do. 4) The worst thing about this unit was that after less than a week of use, it began emitting a constant, high-pitched squeal. Even though it wasnt super loud, it was absolutely unbearable being so close to my head at night. Im sure it just needs some grease or WD-40, but I wasnt about to start haphazardly spraying WD-40 around the inside and probably voiding my warranty — also I shouldnt need to do that after a week. Come on, Vornado. So I decided to return the unit because of the noise plus the other minor annoyances. Again — I just want to reiterate that there are no other fans that I recommend more than Vornado! But this particular unit is a miss. Im actually going to spending my long weekend this weekend making my own transom fan using server cooling fans between two pieces of thin plywood — should be nearly silent and move about twice the air on high as the Vornado.

I have a second story bedroom in a reasonably well insulated house. On bright sunshiny days the upstairs gets warm, later in the day. When the sun goes down, the bedroom remains warm for the first part of the night. This fan can exhaust the hot air, or bring in the significantly cooler air, making the room much more comfortable faster. The fan is very quiet and aesthetically it blends with the window. It Allows my motorized room darkening shade to operate automatically and keep the road dark and cool for the evening. It was a wonderful investment.

1st off, a warning that this fan is designed for a window with a low lower lip (.25 to .50). I have double hung windows with a 1.25 inside lower lip and I ended up having to build a bracket to properly install the unit. That said, once installed, it works great. Its quiet, even on its highest setting. I installed the unit on window for a combined living room open walk thru to kitchen; 28 from window to end wall of kitchen. At its top setting, I can feel air movement at 20 from the window and was able to lower the temp in the two combined rooms several degrees F° in about 1.5 hrs. The remote is simple and easy to use, but is tiny and could be lost easy; put it somewhere you know you can find it. It was worth the cost and I do recommend it if you need something to vent a full room. Just check your window sills carefully before buying to avoid frustration.

Transom is the result of a complete re-imagining of what a window fan should be. The air chamber abundantly draws fresh air from the outside in — or reverses electronically to exhaust stale air out. Powerful airflow circulation and comfort at half the height of conventional window fans, Transom is easy to install, blends elegantly into the space and preserves your view. Transom seals off windows 26” to 40” wide with the patented Soft-fit System that provides a sleek, satisfying and snug fit from end to end, without having to remove your screen. Transom – a new kind of window fan.
