> 24 hourIve only had this for a few weeks. Its kinda plasticy and cheap but works well for the price. I would probably buy one with a faster connection out of the drive if I had to do this again. It took about 36 hours to transfer 4.3 TB of photos from another drive. I use it as half of a raid1 to store my Lightroom photos. It replaced a two year old 8 TB WD elements drive that totally died. The other 8 TB is still working fine.

> 24 hourI use this drive for storing my dvd movie collection that I have saved as MP4 files so that I can play them easily on my smart television. I have two of these now, each acting as the backup to the other.

> 24 hourMany reviews complain that the drive doesnt have 18T, but only 16.3T. Its both. Hard drive manufacturers give terabytes not in computer terabytes (T, 2^40 = 1099511627776 bytes each), but in SI terabytes (t, 10^12 = 1000000000000 bytes each). Thats because some hard drive manufacturer started doing that once way back, so they could make their hard drives sound like they were bigger than they were, and the consumers were fooled, so every hard drive manufacturer had to start doing it. So it really is an 18t drive, but thats only 16.37T of space. But NTFS drives cant be initialized with compression enabled if theyre bigger than 16.0T. If you initialize your whole 16.37T hard drive with NTFS, you cant enable compression, and not having compression will cost you more than 0.37T of space. So using Windows, you should shrink the partition on this hard drive to 16T before initializing it. The bottom line is that 16.37T is not a sensible partition size; its worse than having just 16T. But this drive will be fine if you repartition it to 16T, and dont mind throwing away 2% of your disk space.

> 24 hourIt works like it should. Just want to point out that its not ready to go out of the box for many use cases. If you want to use it as a windows installer or something the FAT32 format makes sense, but as a single partition storage device youll need to format as NTFS and delete the smaller 2 tb partition to Allocate as a single, 16tb partition.

> 24 hourAfter getting thru what I think is the infant mortality period for electronics (first 3 weeks of constant use), my 16 TB drive is settling down to production work. These are mainly used for number crunching and raw input data storage. I tend to fill them up every couple of weeks so it is time to order another couple to add to the collection. When I am reading and writing to it, it tends to plateau around 180 MB/sec which is probably an impact of all the other processes going on. This drive has been filled and emptied 3x now so I figure if it survives that usage it is probably safe for storage of data to the end of the job in 3 months or so. My bottom line is simple. I will buy more of them today as they fit my needs. Update. Since the first of the year, I think I have bought 14 of the over 20 TB drives. We use them like floppy disks when the crews are busy churning out data so I just have a pile of drives around. I dont want to jinx it but every drive is hanging in there and churning right along. Right now I have 2x22s and 2s20s hooked up and spinning to my primary computer. They are now mass media storage as all the number crunching is done on 4 and 8 TB SSD drives. Another update. PIcked up a couple 24 TBs and 4 more 22 TBs. They are handling the workload and short term storage requirements nicely. I wish they would write faster but all in all they are quite functional. I have yet to have one drive give me any grief even though when I use them, they are running 24/7 for days on end until I fill them up and set them aside for a few days.

> 24 hourI purchased this drive in January of 2020. I bought mine with a 10 terabyte capacity. In terms of portability, it does require A.C power so keep that in mind when you are traveling. However, if you are somebody that needs to have access to a large amount of data or have space for large amounts of data at any given time, then you really cant do much better than this drive. For the price, you are getting a great value with these drives. From disassembly videos, it seems that most of this elements contain Western Digital Red drives. To buy just that hard drive (at an equal storage size as an Elements) it is actually cheaper to buy the Elements than it is to just buy the Red hard drive with no enclosure. When doing data transfers, the drive is fast. Ive gotten nearly a true 5gps transfer speed when copying large files. If I had to guess, I would say the drive inside runs at about 5400 or 5600 rpm. While its not as fast as 7200 or an SSD drive, im guessing that it will have a longer longevity than faster hard disk drives. The only time the slower rotation speed becomes a bother is when you havent accessed the drive for about a half hour. It seems to have an idle mode where it is on standby. When you go back to the drive to access information, it takes about 20 seconds for it to wake back up and get back up to speed. Its not really a problem if you are constantly reading and writing information, but it can be a small nuisance when accessing it intermittently. Long Story short, if you are looking for a drive that has a very large storage capacity, is relatively portable, and is cheap, then look no further. Are there better and faster drives out there? Yes. They also cost more. I have used this drive for video editing and have actively edited movies off of this drive with footage up to 2k resolution with no problem. The main option you are probably comparing this to is the My Book which is also made by Western Digital. The only difference with that drive is that it comes with encryption software, and allows the drive to be accessed by a network. If you need network access then the choice is clear, but if you want the My Book for the encryption software, be aware there are hundreds of other encryption programs available (some of them are free and actually work very well), and purchasing the My Book for that option is sort of a waste of money. If you just need a drive for the storage capacity and nothing else, then this drive is for you.

> 24 hourMy hard drive is still chugging along. It is a price and storage bs speed trade off. Great value for the size. Hard to compete with solid state but so much more value
