Avalon Hill Betrayal at House on the Hill, Green

Greater than one weekThis game is a lot of fun. I especially like the fact that all the players starts with a common cause to explore the house but then one of them becomes the bad guy (by various dark ways typical to horror movies). Then it becomes a game of all the players vs the other player. Mostly this amounts to the players trying to just survive the game. Each group has separate goals needed to win the game.

> 3 dayMy family and I cannot get enough of this game. So much so, that I cant remember if cannot or can not was the proper choice for the previous sentence. But seriously, re-playability is awesome and near infinite: - The house is ALWAYS different every time you play because you pick the next explored room out of a shuffled deck - There are 50 different Haunts (game changing scenarios where a betrayer is chosen) that are triggered from a dice roll that are picked by two random cards in two different decks (i.e. the three totally different and random things have to happen when a Haunt is chosen, so, theres really no way to influence which one is picked - Each time a Haunt is chosen, conditions vary, including who is the betrayer (so, the same amount of people could play the same exact characters over and over in a game night, and having the same Haunt happen the in same night is very unlikely. Even if it did happen, the betrayer would most likely not be the same. You want flavor? Each card, room, whatever, has flavor text that is optional to read and make the atmosphere that much spookier. You dont want flavor? Skip the flavor text. Its not a big deal, more about preference of atmosphere. The thing I love best about this game is the Haunt. At first, everyone is fully cooperating, going around doing standard creepy house stuff: exploring rooms, picking up items, encountering creatures that (literally) test the bounds of your sanity, ducking tops that are flung at your head by murderous ghost children... you know, that sort of thing. But when the Haunt happens? It turns out that one of you is a betrayer, and you didnt even know it. Not even the betrayer. Now it is a race against time to do whatever the scenario says. The betrayer has a book of their information, and the heroes have a book for THEIR information. Both sides have information that the other side doesnt, and they will use it to win. The betrayer could command a horde of minions, or assassins, or be the pawns of mind controlling aliens, or be trying to flood the house so that their fellow explorers can die with them happily ever after in the house forever... the remaining heroes must keep exploring the house to find certain objects and/or rooms to defeat the betrayer, or they may have to just run for their (probably shortened) lives... and those are just the ones Ive seen in the past few days. So, to sum it all up, I highly recommend this game. This is by far my familys favorite. I can honestly say theres nothing I think is wrong with it, or Id want to change. I hope an expansion comes out soon because I cant wait to see how they would expand and improve on such an almost perfect game.

04-06-2025This game is awesome. Every game is different because you build the board as you go! I played it at a friends house a while back and loved it so much I ordered one on the drive home to share with my family. Since then weve had countless fun game nights. This is a family favorite!

> 3 dayme and my husband love this game, sadly our friends are kinda...unimaginative...so it just doesnt make sense to them. It is kind of an rp/strategy game, if you/your friends dont like that then i wouldnt recommend this game for you.

> 3 dayThe plastic clips suck. about half of mine are worthless and dont stay in place. The game itself could be improved. While I get that the traitor and the explorers each have secrets, there are portions which should be reviewed by everyone. For example, the wraiths method of movement. Thats a rule our traitor misunderstood but could be fixed if both books had the rules. It wouldnt change any secrets.
