I thought I loved this rod until I got one by Light My Fire. They take no effort at all to throw tons of sparks. With this one I have to use a great deal more pressure to get half the sparks. I am 70 and have arthritis so this is not the best rod for me.

Very easy to use, throws a HUGE shower of long burning sparks. Outstanding for lighting fires. PROTIP- try cotton balls coated with petroleum jelly as tinder, Pull them apart until wispy and hit with sparks. Store in small plastic or metal container.

Used a maxpedition fatty pouch to male a center console truck emergency kit. Colorado provides lots of opportunities to screw up, so felt it was a solid idea. 1 part of my fire kit was a 4 Bayite ferro rod. Used it a few times and it indeed was successful in throwing enough sparks to start a fire. Sadly some jagoff broke into my truck one night and decided to help themselves to the emergency pouch, and the larger and more equiped bag I had put together that also had the 4 rod. Now that Im starting over and restocking, I decided to gomwith the larger maxpedition beefy pouch, and added the 6 Bayite ferro rod. This one is better. The extra 2 inches makes it easier to hold, and gives more area to scrape. It throws better sparks in my opinion also. When I rebuild the backpack Ill get another one of these also for that fore kit. They could add an actual nubby handle for increased grip, but overall very happy with it.

This item is well made. It produces sparks easily and efficiently. The fire starting--striker and bar--are connected by a very nice quantity of parachute cord [sometimes called survival cord]. It arrived quickly. I highly recommend it!

1/2"× 5"" Pack of 2

  • Can be used for the kitchen as well as survival.
  • Not only for emergency bug-out bags, but also for gifts.

Size Comparison

  • Large size( 1/2"" thick) means plenty for your hands to hang onto. If you have large hands, we recommend the large size.
  • The 3/8"" × 4"" is big enough for easier strikes and small enough to carry.

How to use

  1. Scrape away the coating to expose shiny metal before first use.
  2. Hold the ferro rod close to the tinder at about a 45-degree angle. Place the scraper near the top of the rod.
  3. Pull the rod back (away from the tinder) with a slow and steady motion.
