> 3 dayThe rod is so huge and the striker is so good that it is hard not to get a fire going. As long as you know how to use the tool, there is literally a shower of sparks with every try. Tip - hold the striker in place at about a 20 degree angle and do not move it. The only force you use on the striker is to apply enough straight downward force to keep the ferrocerium rod from deflecting it. Now place the rod at a 45 degree angle beneath the striker. Pull the ferrocerium rod straight UP. Do NOT slide it back. Pull it straight up while you push the striker straight down.. Keep the striker at 20 degrees and the rod at 45 degrees. You will get a bright, how shower of sparks.

> 3 dayBefore you gripe about this fire steel, make sure you use it correctly. Scrape off the black coating on the side you intend to spark on. For easier starts, keep some cotton balls and Vaseline around. Dip a cotton ball into the Vaseline, put a good coating on one side of it. Place that where you intend to build a fire, and scrape the fire steel. The sparks will light the cotton, and it will act as a wick (similar to a candle) for the Vaseline. It will burn long enough to start your fire.

Greater than one weekI carry this in my vehicle. Down through the years i have driven coast to coast many times; And have driven from East Tennessee to Alaska several times; Through isolated wilderness areas of US and Canada, camping along the way. There have been several occasions where i have had to build a fire for safety, not just for cooking or ambiance. Always had to be mindful of keeping fire starting paraphernalia on hand and in good shape. Out there, where no one lives, the smallest detail can mean the difference between life and death. With this Survival Drilled Flint Steel Fire Starter Ferrocerium Rod Kit i do not have to worry about wet matches or lighter failure. I carry it in my vehicle with a baggie of lint trappings and some news papers.

> 3 dayI have been looking for such a flint for a while. Finally I decided to order this item which had most of my requirements. I received the item and I realized it was much better than I expected. The quality was superb. The shipment was fast and the price was very reasonable. I plan to order a few more. I am extremely happy with both the quality and the fast shipping.

> 3 dayIn the past I bought the small fire starter set. It was really small to work with, plus you have to scrape off enough magnesium to be able to start a proper fire. That would mean that you can’t make that work in windy conditions. So I waited a while to finally buy this product. I love it!!! I can make bigger and better sparks to light a fire, and even use it if it’s windy. I’m looking forward to using it in the future, and I feel confident that if I ever have to use it I can build a fast, easy, and proper fire to stay warm. I recommend this to other people!
