Greater than one weekI was going to try to save a few bucks on a ferro rod alone and drill a hole and tie some paracord myself. Then I found this and saw that it already had both in just the size I was wanting, at the same price as what it would have cost for me to buy separately. So, it was a no brainer. The rod sparks great. Even my 14 year old nephew, whod never used a firestick before, got a fire going within just a few tries, once I told him he had to scratch off the black coating first anyway. This is probably the harder type of ferro rod, which doesnt spark quite as much as the softer rods, but will last longer and at present is a LOT cheaper. The price is the main reason I suspect its the harder variety though. I really dont know with any absolute. I doubt Ive ever even used the softer stuff at 40 bucks a stick. This is worlds easier than those cheap, small flint sets we used in scouts though. Id still recommend striking it off the back of a knife over the included striker. Its nice that theres a striker attached that you cant lose, in case you dont have a knife handy, but the spine of a knife is much easier to control IMO, as long as it doesnt have a thick protective coating that dulls the edges too much. You need a sharp 90 degree angle to effectively create big sparks. Of course you can always file down the finish on the knifes spine a bit, or, as many people seem to like to do with the BK2, strip the black coating completely and either polish the blade or put their own unique forced patina on it. At 15 dollars or less, Id speculate that this might be the best ferro rod option going on amazon, unless you dont want the paracord, which I find useful not only in making sure I dont lose the striker, should I for some reason not have a knife, but it also gives you a little something extra to hold onto.

> 3 dayThis was the first time ever using a ferris rod but it was pretty easy. I took some light grit sand paper and took off the paint and it bathed my tinder in sparks. It only took a couple swipes and it was lit. I admit though I did use the back of my knife instead of a striker. I bought this one with a lanyard as an afterthought because two days before I had bought the one without it. Both of them Im sure work great but this is the one I tried first. I mean they look the same except for the para cord lanyard. Will definitely be buying more as soon as I can. Love this product. One is now permanently in my big out bag and the other is on my person at all times. I cant say enough good things about this product. I hope all my survival products work this well

> 3 dayIf you’re a prepper you will love this. I am not one,I’m just an extremely bored old man that has fun lighting my fireplace with this. I have mastered lighting my fireplace every time with the first strike, I use it to ignite a marijuana rope dipped in wax. Yes a hemp rope is made out of marijuana get over it!

> 3 dayThis is a necessary outdoor tool. You can run out of matches and lighter fluid, but this is always going to strike a spark.

> 3 dayIts not as easy to make a spark as the video makes it seem. But with a few tries I was able to get sparks to come out. It will be a good tool for surviving the apocalypse.

> 3 dayHave ordered several of these ferrocium fire starters. I use them to teach techniques and tricks to handling and processing tinder... both to adults and children. If a participant exhibits more than a passing interest, I give them the rod. Bayite rods shower sparks, and the large diameter rods are easy to handle. The striker has a sharp 90degree edge. But, with many users, the rod does get worn down. A single experienced user would make this last decades if they protect it with wax when it sits idle for a month or two...
