Greater than one weekThis Ferro Rod is the best Ive found. Be sure to slowly scrape a thin strip(about a quarter of an inch wide and down the length of the rod) of the black coating off of the portion of the Rod before you plan to strike. Leaving 90% of the coating on the rest of the rod will dramatically extend the life of the Rod. I store mine in a ziplock also. Ive read that the oxygen will dry it out over time. Anyway, This Ferro Rod is a complete beast. The first time I struck it with the Bayite pro striker, Sparks just exploded of this thing. I couldnt believe my eyes. Ive used a few other top-rated Rods over the years with mixed results , but, this Bayite Rod is definitely the King! I also struck it with the spine of the blade of my Mora Garberg full Tang knife. Wow! Call the fire department! Excellent Firestarting Rod. Ive bought several Bayite rods of various sizes and they all have worked very well. But, this 6X 1/2 is what I carry in my fire kit. Stay Warm!

> 3 dayI would give this a 5 star for performance. The only thing holding me back is the size. This thing is huge! If youre looking for a nice rod to have in a gear bag for camping, this thing will most likely last a lifetime. But with the size, its a little to big for a BOB, GHB or tossing in your pocket for a short hike, in my opinion. If you know what a kubaton is, that is roughly the size of this. Which is great for long term use, but boils down to lugging around a huge chunk of steel. If weight is an issue, consider this factor when thinking to purchase. The braided cordage is a nice feature on this. I wish more would include this feature on the rod as its always good to have the extra cord.
