This is an exceptionally compelling drama about friendship, loss, love devotion, racial bigotry and the status of women from the 1930s when the story of the Whistle Stop Cafe takes place to the 80s when the characters who narrate the story meet and become friends. Is the story also about Lesbianism between the Idgie and Ruth characters? Well, if you have read the book, you know that it is; but it is subdued in the film to the point where if homosexual romance bothers you, there is nothing to worry about...you will not see anything overtly homosexual here. The acting by the entire cast is phenomenal; there are no bad or even mediocre performances. Mary Stuart Masterson as Idgie Threadgoode delivers her best film performance as does Mary-Louise Parker as Ruth...my opinion of course. Jessica Tandy as Ninny delivers her best late career performance, excepting Driving Miss Daisy; and I have never seen a better performance from Kathy Bates as Evelyn Couch. While this is primarily a dramatic piece, with considerable pathos, there is much comic relief too, most of it provided by Kathy Bates, who plays an overweight 40-something menopausal married woman, with low self-esteem; who is trying to rekindle marital bliss and build her confidence...she is hilarious in parts of this film, especially in her alter ego character, TAWANDA. Jon Avnet does a fine job behind the camera putting it all together. In summary, this is a totally satisfying dramedy with literally something for everybody...and carries my highest recommendation.

Love this movie. Could re watch it numerous times. Dont dismiss old people. You can glean much Interesting information from them. A very heartwarming. Story.

I bought this for my mother this past Christmas and she wanted to watch it on our DVD Player in our living room but of course our DVD Remote Control didnt have any workable batteries to activiate our DVD player to play it.
