I took a chance based on the reviews and bought this for my 7-year-olds birthday gift. An excellent game! My teen enjoys it very much, too. Like most card games, it takes a few rounds to figure out exactly how the rules work and possible strategies. The basic idea is to lay 4 cards in front of you face-down and, through the course of the game, replace them with cards worth fewer points. Low score wins. We play the optional 2 cards face-up and 2 cards face-down version because we learned that while trying to concentrate on the other players moves and your own strategy, it is challenging to remember just 4 cards! It is also nice because you can play one round or multiple rounds. We usually play at least 3 rounds to equalize everyones chances of winning. A short round can last three minutes; long round about seven minutes. Perfect amount of fun/challenge/anticipation for all three of us.

This game is simpler than many we have, which is a nice change. It’s still fun to play even though it’s simpler. Good for a quicker game or travel too.

We had played this card game at our grandkids house. (They are 4 and 6.) Afterwards I had to order the game for my house, to have for the other kids. We played it New Years Eve party with only adults. Had a blast. It is a fun game that does not require reading and the rules are flexible. I recommend this game to anyone that likes a challenge of chance & memory. The goal of the game is to have the fewest points with Cats and not get caught with the high scoring Rats.. The 4 star score for durability is because it is a card game, they will eventually wear out.

Fun game for the kids! My 5 and 7 year old love it, but its still a little too much for my 3 year old.

It"s never too early to develop a good poker face. With Rat-a-Tat Cat, a poker face is just one of the skills players need to perfect. As in poker, luck, skill, strategy, and intuition each play a part. Players are dealt four cards, which are kept face- down, except for a quick peek at two of them. Each player in turn pulls a card from the draw pile to replace one of the four. Memory is important, as the object is to end with the lowest score, and players must keep track of the values on their four cards. "Peek," "Swap," and "Draw Two" Power cards turn up occasionally, allowing players to maneuver and strategize further. Delightfully witty pictures of cats (the good guys--low points) and rats (bad guys--high points) illustrate each of the 54 cards. Young card sharks will develop a sense of timing and greater ease with numbers, and can begin to grasp the concept of probability. Winner of Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Best Toy Award and the 1996 Mensa Best New Mind Game. For 2 to 6 players. --Emilie Coulter
