A friend told me about this product and I tired it and I will use it for the rest of my life. It brought back life to my cutting boards boards that are 50 years old. They look brand new again and I couldnt be happier because they belonged to my parents and are special to me.

These two products made a huge difference in my new Boos work table. I thought it was beautiful as is, but after applying the oil one night and the cream the next night, it looks 10 times better. The color is more rich and the texture is more smooth. Its stunning. The table is 60 x 30, but I barely made a dent in the containers. While I was at it, I decided to oil my salad bowl and wooden spoons, and everything looks better.

When I first considered purchasing the Boos Block Essential Mystery Oil and Board Cream Care and Maintenance Set I was concerned that it seemed a little expensive, not excessively, but more than I paid for the mineral oil I had been using on my cutting boards. I decided to go ahead and buy it. Now, Im not sure Ill ever use anything else. Using the mineral oil alone moisturized my Boos Block but every time I used it, I would have to rub more oil on it. The Boos Block Mystery oil moisturizes so much better and the Board Cream locks the moisture in. It doesnt take much of either and its easy to use. Since moisturizing by boards with these, Ive cut on them several times, washed them, and they still arent looking dry. This is what makes the set worth spending the money on. In the long run, this method truly is less expensive because it works so well.

Is Mystery Oil really that much better than standard food grade mineral oil thats 80% cheaper? Almost certainly not. In fact I dont know that the composition is any different (its not listed of course). Boos blocks dont come from some magical forest and require unicorn blood for proper maintenance. Naturally theyll recommend their own product, which pads the bottom line. See also: printers and ink cartridges ... Knowing that, I bought it anyway, along with the board cream. I reasoned that as much as I spent on my Boos block, and in consideration of reported issues with splitting and/or warping, I might as well try it as insurance if nothing else, to show that I explicitly followed maintenance instructions in case something does go awry. FWIW, a little goes a long way and this bottle looks like itll last a long time. After that, Ill likely switch to generic food grade oil, but I think its worth it once at least.

Since I love to cook and have Global and Wusthol knives, I had started to look for a good cutting board. As it turns out, my roommate has a cutting board that was made for him by a high school class whose teacher served with him in the Marines. The board has feet, is 1-1/2 inches thick and is 12 x 18. He had no idea what he had and had stuck it in a cupboard under the stove. I had a handyman sand it down since someone had gauged it with a knife. Although he went ahead and oiled it and put cream on it, I started using the Boos Mystery Oil. I could be wrong but I think the proper way to do this is to squirt a lot on the board and use your hand to spread it around. I think I wasted some time in using a paper towel to do this because I was simply not leaving enough on the board. There will probably be places that soak up the oil faster than others. Just go back and spread it around some more. I am also using it on the underside of the board along with the feet. Do not ignore the edges. That is probably where it will start to warp if at all. Anyway, I am just going to keep adding the oil until the board cannot absorb more and then use the cream. I will then maintain once a month. I read where someone said that it was a chore to do this. Huh? It is actually relaxing and enjoyable to see it deepen in color. I am sorry that some people appear to have received counterfeit versions of this based on their reviews. Mine were perfect and do not have any odor. I really could not be happier with the product. When I move and have to give up this cuting board, I am sure I will buy a John Boos walnut and maple block.

This is an essential for ANY high-quality, hand-made wooden butcher blocks, cutting boards or counter surfaces you may have in your kitchen or dining room. The Boos Mystery Oil is used to moisturize the wood and help minimize the chance of warping, separating or de-laminating that can occur once the wood begins to dry out. It spreads quickly and evenly, penetrating deeply past the wood surface. To help seal the block/board/counter surface, the Boos Cream locks the Mystery Oil into the wood and helps heal the nicks and cuts caused by use. It helps repel all liquids, helping make washing and cleaning much easier as well. Both products are completely natural, yet contain no vegetable or animal-based oils to spoil or skunk, which could potentially give wood surfaces a rotten smell. You can find other products that do the same job just as well as these two, but as set a set, the price is very good and John Boos products are known for their quality. I have several Boos Block boards and just acquired a new Top Chop block (see pics below), which I used the Boos twins on as soon as I took off the plastic wrap. The Boos Mystery Oil and Board Cream quickly and easily conditioned my new Top Chop block and really brought out the beautiful details of its Walnut construction. This Boos set is a very reasonable investment to keeping the wood in your kitchen protected and looking its best...

I previously posted a very negative review because I like others had received the white label Mystery Oil and the Board Cream with the line marked through and believed it to be counterfeit. I wrote a question to both Amazon and Boos asking if this product was legit or not. Did not receive reply so I returned and re-ordered. When I got a similar product I called the BOOS company directly and spoke with customer service. Fortunately she validated that they are re-working the label and product is legit. Look forward to using on my new board!

Five stars. It isn’t a cheapest shopping but I bought this because I wanted to take a good care of my cutting board. When I used this with the brand new cutting board, I used my hands to rub them in, and I was able to see the oil was being absorbed so quickly. Depending on the how often you use cutting board but I apply them only once in 4-5 months and does not seem to cause issues. Highly recommend if you want to take good care of your cutting board.

There are many such treatments to protect woods from splitting, cracking and drying out. Everything from food-grade mineral oil and bees wax to branded treatments. John Boos makes a very good cutting board treatment and kit.

Like many purchasers whove written saying theyve gotten counterfeit products, I received Boos Mystery Oil in a clear bottle with a paper label, not the traditional yellow Boos bottle. And there was a black line through words on the cream tube. I called Boos to see if this was their product. The helpful customer service rep assured me that the oil and cream were legitimate Boos products. She explained that during COVID Boos has had trouble getting their traditional bottles. I used the products, and they are great - as advertised.
