Was getting inconsistent readings on wood that got wet due to a dishwasher issue. Discovered that raising my hand off the meter an inch or two would reduce the reading about 1-2%. Similarly gripping it tighter or looser would change the reading about ±2% on wood that was at around 17%. See pictures. First is obviously not gripping the meter. Second is approaching the meter. Last is gripping the meter (not pressing down at all). It still says our masonry (there was no subfloor) is off the scale in several spots though Ive been running a dehumidifier for weeks. I suspect that is due to the rough texture of the concrete. If youre only looking for relative numbers this could work but otherwise its no good. I missed the return window, otherwise it would be going back.

After a contractor poorly installed windows causing water damage, I bought this to check the rest of my home. I found two more areas that didnt show any visible water intrusion. Both new areas had dripping wet insulation. Who knows how long they would have continued to get wet if I hadnt made this $40 purchase. Now with every rain storm I run this along my windows frames. Super easy to use and read. Its accurate as it matched the waste restorations $1200 meter.

It works well and fast. The display is bright and very readable. The reading seems very reproducible. I am not able to check its absolute accuracy, but a relative comparison with dry area is usually sufficient. The audio beep and bright bar graph both make it easy to quickly determine if there is a problem. I was able to see the reading go down steadily over days as the wood dried out. It feels well made and is easy to use. The one downside is that it takes a screw drive to change the battery, which is inconvenient when I remove the battery for storage.

I HAD A GRAY WATER JOB, SATURATED WALLS AND FLOORING. I TOOK READINGS OF UNAFFECTED AREAS FOR COMPARISON, THE METER READ AS INTENDED ON CONCRETE, HARDWOOD AND DRYWALL. I WAS ABLE TO TRACK AND RECORD THE MOISTURE LEVELS AS THINGS DRIED. I AM 100% SATISFIED WITH ALL OF MY KLEIN TOOLS BUT THIS ONE PAID FOR ITSELF FIRST ASSIGNMENT! AND USE IT OFTEN. PRICEPOINT, QUALITY, EASE OF USE AND PERFORMANCE 5 STARS. THIS ONE STAYS IN THE TOOL BAG

If you want to know what the moisture content of your wood is this is not the correct tool. Its accuracy is +-4% so if it reads 8% on the meter your wood could be as high as 12% or as low as 4% and thats a substantial change. It also changes its measurement if your hand is near it or not. Just testing this I saw a reading of 7.1% on construction lumber (seems crazy low) go up to 8.9% if I put my entire hand over it. Thats a measurement increase of 25.3%! If you has position has the potential to swing your reading by 25% this doesnt seem like its even remotely accurate.

Timely arrival and in perfect condition. Checked the accuracy against a friend’s borrowed meter and dead on. It’s a Klein, among the best out there at this price point. I’ve used other Klein meters for years and still have them in my toolbox. So durability is expected. If it meets your needs, Buy it.

3/29/2023 Update: Klein replaced my unit under warranty, but if course I had to pay the return shipping, whereas if I had tested it right away I could have returned it to Amazonfor free. The new meter seems consistent with my miniLigno pin meter. Im pretty sure the sensing plate on the bad unit was set too deep and couldnt make contact with the wood, and looking at the new one I can see the difference. Original review: Purchased in July 2022 and tested operability when received, i.e. I installed the battery, turned it on, cycled through the modes and pressed it against some kiln-dried lumber in my shop. I thought it seemed odd that the moisture was so low, but didnt pursue it. Removed the battery and stored it in a shop drawer where I keep my instruments. Fast forward to January 2023, I got the meter out and checked some 2 year-old air-dryed walnut...meter indicated about 1.5% moisture, which is impossible. Measurements on other wood were all in the same realm of impossible. I have an inquiry submitted to Klein, but I see a lot of reviews with similar issue. I will update this review if/when I have something helpful to report.

Just retrieved this pin-less moisture meter sold by Klein because Klein usually has quality tools. But this meter did not work from the moment I powered it on and selected the settings as outlined in the instruction manual. It always reads OL regardless of the mode setting, supposedly indicating the the moisture detected is outside the meters measurement range. I tried it on wood, drywall and concrete (masonry) slab of known dryness. It simply did not work. I am sending it back to Amazon and will try another meter from one of the local big box stores. Disappointed in Klein Tools on this defected unit.

Apparently I had a bathroom leak that ran into my office, soaking the carpet. My insurance wouldnt cover it and a crew recommended I rip out and replace all the walls for $10k! 1) They didnt even use a machine to see what walls were affected 2) Im a 56 year old female living paycheck to paycheck and dont have that kind of money. I watched some YouTube videos and bought this. I ripped out all the carpet, rented a fan from home depot and used the moisture meter. It showed me exactly what pieces of drywall were dry and which ones were wet and needed to be replaced. I cut out the wet pieces, and replaced them. I kept checking this machines gauge on other things and it is extremely accurate. I later installed tile. Its been a year and I havent had any problems. This saved me big $$!

We recently had a water intrusion in our house. We hired the pros to come in and do the dryout. Im sure this isnt the same grade tool they use. Theirs probably has some certification or something to justify the $800 or whatever price they pay for it. I dont care if this is off by a few percent or something... it told me the same spots were wet, which is what I care about. I cant tell you how accurate the numbers are, but this thing works. I just press it against what I think is a dry area to establish a baseline, then look for moisture. We are staying at my mother in laws, and there was a leak under a cabinet, and I was able to use it to test for moisture before putting things back. Very handy. I read another review where someone used it to test if their laundry is dry. Im going to try that next.
