Klein Tools VDV500-820 Cable Tracer with Probe Tone Pro Kit for Telephone, Internet, Video, Data and Communications Cables

I had ethernet installed into a home and the installers looped a ethernet cable so it had no end go into a room where all the cables met so there was alot of ethernet cables about 15 different cables I was plugging in and out ethernet into all of the ends cause the customer wanted internet to go into a specific room found out that the cable we were looking for was up further into the wall and it was looped it had no end and I couldnt find the end so I ended up cutting the cable in half to get it to reach the room just barely and now there is a dead cord that goes to nothing in the walls that I cant even get out but this solved the problem for that person. Also if anyone is wondering no you cant wave it against tge wall like some stud finder you have to have full contact or about 1 cm away from cable to hear anything and by full contact it can touch the shielded cable jacket and still buzz however if it was naked copper it is louder about 5x louder but its still good and loud without bare copper. I cant see much use for this if its not a fresh install maybe if you bought or it included a ethernet coupler so it can become a female end so when your at a data center and your trying to find a certain cable it will pick it up because you cant tone thru an active data line cable. And the device is pretty straight forward you dont need to read the instructions at all to use it. Only things youd want to know later on after purchasing it it wishing you knew it does a certian feature cause you didnt read the manual is the plastic toner tip is replaceable red on cont means its an active data line blinking red battery light means battery is dying. Other obscure infomation you might want to know but probably are buying solely for rj11 or rj12 or rj45 ethernet anyway is the electrical wire toning at the bottom of the handle there is a spot for positive and negative bare wire to plug into and their is button releases the two clip probs have spikes and have to touch bare copper and wont read thru wirelessly at all like the ethernet toner does the clip prob spikes are tightening adjustable. Only things I would buy along side this purchase your deciding on may be a ethernet coupler since it comes with aaa batteries if your buying a used one I would add aaa batteries. Also if you think the beeping noise might upset those around you buy some 3.5mm jack headphones to go with em. As far as the price is concerned if the customer just bought this instead of hiring someone to do it for him he would of saved more money is technically dummy proof if your helping someone who is a firm believer that iPhone is better than Android then this tool would be easy to use for that person who may not be tech savvy.

You simply cannot go wrong with Klein Tools. I have almost everything Klein so I may be biased a bit but I do not need to talk up this product for it to be a quality one. Accurate readings, multiple tone frequencies and great range on the wand has saved me many a headache in someone’s attic trying to trace a wire that, yes, was underneath some spray foam insulation that ran the entire length of the house. This is a must have for my tool kit.

This unit will only trace out open ended wires. if youre trying to trace something connected it will not give a signal. But other than that its a nice unit.

Very well made. Toned cat5 wires four floors away without issue - strong signal & adjustable signal tone a great benefit. Very sensitive -- in addition to finding appropriate wire, it picked up data traffic in adjacent wires and sounded a different kind of tone for that.

Don’t waste your time with this product if your wires are behind drywall. This product isn’t very effective, nor worth the price.

I was worried after I saw a negative youtube review, but Im super glad I ordered this anyway. It totally saved my bacon. You can actually vaguely hear the pulsing when trying to trace a wire through sheetrock if youre close, so its super powerful. And you can hear it VERY clearly at the breaker panel without even taking the cover off. Just rub it across all the breakers and itll start screaming at the breaker the wire goes back to. Thats how I just used it and it saved me so much time. I cant wait to trace more wires!

Great tool

Item not working. All came with batteries pre installed and everything. Changed the batteries and still not working. This person that pupal this into a box full of tape, could not just test it before sending it out. Avoid this seller
