Safety 1st Magnetic Locking System (1 Key and 8 Locks)

> 3 dayThese are great if you dont want your child locks to be visible or leave small openings for cabinets to close on little fingers. You do need to drill them in to the cabinet, but everything is done out of sight, so we are able to use them even though we dont own our home. Yes, they are a little bit of a pain to deal with, but I dont think there are child safety locks out there that arent at least somewhat of a pain. Once you get the hang of opening them (you have to hold the magnet in EXACTLY the right spot and open the door while its still positioned there) and remember to grab the key before trying to open the door (it does take a little while), these work perfectly. Theyve made our cabinet doors so uninteresting to our very curious and active 7-month-old that he no longer even bothers trying to open them. I am giving them 4 stars only because one of the locks didnt work properly and we cant use it. Fortunately, we didnt need that one so I let it go.

> 3 dayWe installed these today. It took about 2 hours to install all 8. 6 on cabinets, 2 on drawers. The two drawers took about 30 minutes each (the bulk of the time), because it is very difficult to mount them in such tight quarters. I suppose the ease of installation will depend on your cabinetry and tools available. It seemed my drill bit was a little dull, and thus a bit harder to drill the pilot holes. We also dont have any of the fancy drills that can go around corners and tight spots, so the drawers had to be removed to place the catch, then put back to measure for the lock, then removed again to drill the lock in. The little sticky templates that come for installation do help - but they arent exact, so you will need to do some eyeballing around and maybe trial and error on the first lock until you figure out how they fit. The locks for the drawers, being mounted vertically, seem to be much more finicky to line up. At first we thought they would be unusable, but were able to find a way to mount them to work. However, Im not sure how confident I am in their holding strength. I would caution that these wont work on all cabinets. The instructions state that inset cabinetry may not work. Luckily, our inset cabinets had enough to mount. I tried to link the instruction manual from the Safety 1st site - but cant look it up there by product number. I would recommend you e-mail them: [email protected] and request an instruction manual before purchasing to ensure they will work on your cabinets. An interesting note: Placing these on my granite counter top caused the latches to unlock. I had thought the key was a magnet, but apparently any large enough piece of metal serves as an unlocker. There must be a bunch of ferrite or other metals in the granite which serves the purpose. I suppose this could be a risk if a child was holding a metal toy within an inch or so of the lock, while attempting to pull open at the same time. Im a first time parent, but with the way my 8 month old is picking things up, Id be surprised if she doesnt figure out how to open this stuff within another 4-6 months. -1 star for what could be an easier installation, especially for vertical mounted -1 star for being able to open with a large piece of metal, and not specifically a magnet as I had thought.

> 3 dayEasy to install and the templates included are brilliant but I did find the screws to be so short they were really hard to work with...now I understand that you dont want them going through the cabinet but I would have liked them a hair longer. Buy an extra magnet. I love that I can turn off the magnet when my grandson is not here. Good value Addendum: I have read that everyone says you must drill a hole in the inside of the cabinet to screw in the screws...they do have a pointed tip but its not sharp enough. I used an awl to get a hole started and did not have to drill one hole. The unit has been up a couple of months now and Im very pleased. One lock comes open at times but I think its my fault and I need to adjust the unit up a bit which is not a problem because the screws are on a track that gives you leeway in either direction. Im still very pleased with this purchase. MAKE SURE YOU BUY A SPARE MAGNET! I put that off and then mine went MIA. Had it not been for the powerful magnet on the base of my power drill I would have had to wait for a replacement to access my cabinets.

> 3 dayThese things work! At first it was a little difficult to get the two pieces lined up when I was originally installing on the cabinets but I figured it out. My youngest is 1 and he gets into everything. I just put one of these on all of the cabinets to keep him out of everything he can get his hands on. The magnet seems to work well even with thicker cabinets and it has a button you can push in when you dont want the cabinets locked, like when you are putting away dishes. If you dont use this unlock function, it can get frustrating using the magnet every time. Important note: place the magnet somewhere that is easy for you to access but not the kids. We lost the first magnet after the first week and had to order a generic one for child safety locks. I had to use some strong earth magnets in the mean time to still be able to get into my cabinets. It would be nice to have some sort of magnet holder for this but you can easily stick it on any metal appliance for easy access. I wish I had bought these 6 children ago!

Greater than one weekIm a bargain hunter just like you and I went full circle from Amazon to E b a y to other sites looking for the very best deals for some cabinet locks. I actually had a bid on E b a y that I ended up cancelling because after a good bit of research I realized why their item was a few bucks cheaper. Basically, Safety 1st has a really old-style, which is what was being sold by someone on E b a y. You can recognize it because the magnet key is round. The old-style also does not feature the temporarily unlock sliding-button like the newest style (the one that uses the diamond-shaped key). Whats the big difference you ask? After using the old-style Safety 1st cabinet locks at our brother-in-laws house, the fact that you cant temporarily un-lock the old-style is a big pain, especially while cooking or cleaning up a spill. Now the diamond-shaped key really makes no difference, other than the fact thats my observation in determining if youre buying the old-style or the new-style. I do notice that the diamond-shaped key has a small-hole to hang on a lanyard or keyring of some type, cant remember if the old-style round one did or did not have that. Overall, these work great for our cabinets both downstairs and in the upstairs bath. The sticker-templates are EXCELLENT and makes this really easy to install and ensure everything will line up correctly. Easy 5-star recommendation here. The only gotcha is that the very first one I installed was in the corner, I found you should install these based on the middle of the top of each door. The reason is because our particular cabinets were joined by some type of hidden metal joint in the corners. You can tell because the magnetic key will stick to the corners by itself. Anyways, its much more difficult to drill through metal, than it is through wood, hence why I decided the top-middle of each door is the ideal mounting location for our particular cabinets.

Greater than one weekThese are a little difficult to install (I think most saftey latches unless the stick on, but those dont work very well when toddlers are yanking on them), but once I got them all installed, they worked great! I babysit twin 12 month olds every week, so I needed to babyproof my kitchen, but I didnt want to have to deal with annoying baby locks all the time. I love that I can flip them on as needed and turn them off when the kids arent there. The keys are easy to use go through really thick cabinets. I had to add a block of wood under the lock to get them to work in my drawers that have an inset panel and the magnet works just fine. When Im not using the key, I just stick it on the bottom of the cabinets and stays magnetized to hidden screws. I have two key to make it easier to grab without always walking across the kitchen. Note:: I thought that a strong earth magnet work to open these in case I lost the key, but those arent strong enough. Only the key works. Its a good idea to have at least 2 keys.

Greater than one weekPreface: Absolutely Freaking Amazing! Pros: 1) Easy to lineup and install. After the first or second, you become a pro. 2) Directions were easy to read and easy to follow. 3) Cost efficient 4) Completely hidden from view so your kitchen continues to look awesome! 5) When installed correctly ~ no cabinet rattle. Cons: 1) Wish it shipped with more than 1 magnet tool. 2) Wish there was another color option (black perhaps?) Conclusion: My only negatives arent really even cons. Thats because this system is awesome! We originally installed a set at our old house several years ago when our first born son was born. They worked great, and I absolutely loved the fact that they were hidden from view and easy to manipulate with the tool to get them open. When we moved last year, we ordered up another set because we now swear by these things. Once the kiddos grow up, I doubt well even remove ~ we may just keep them on the cabinets and explain to the new owners/renters how to use them. We have encouraged several new parents to purchase, and are aware of atleast 1 couple that has and absolutely loves them! If I could rate this 10 stars, I would! Its been that awesome!

> 3 daySo besides the fact that it does take a while to install, I really like these magnetic baby proof locks in our kitchen cabinets. It keeps our 16 month old from opening the cabinets without anything on the outside of the cabinet appearing as if though its baby proofed. Its a little pricey especially since we had to get 2 packages and you do have to drill into the cabinet, but if your on your first child and plan to have more- these are great. Just dont lose the magnet to open the cabinets ( we stick ours in the fridge) .

> 3 dayI installed half a dozen of these in one evening and after several weeks I can honestly say they work great and arent as hard to install as many would seem to think. First, are they secure? Weve found that they are. The only issue is that these locks cannot be installed in most pull out drawers unless theres a substantial upper lip above the drawer where the locking mechanism can be installed. We found that none of our drawers had this so we couldnt use these locks at all. The cabinet doors, however, were fine. I installed these in three different types of cabinets and they all worked fine. However, there was one one annoying issue with the cabinets - doors that were already magnetized by the manufacturer. Two sets of our cabinet doors were like this and I had to get a little creative with the installation. One of these cabinets took a good half hour or more to deal with and was quite stressful. Ive read some reviews about the screws used for these and how hard it is to screw them in. Note, these locks require pre-drilling! The people who tried to screw these in without doing that werent following the manufacturers instructions. One huge thing to remember with these locks. Do not buy the extra keys. Theyre a total ripoff. Simply purchase some strong magnets and keep them nearby. I used magnets from a game called Attraction by R&R Games. You can probably buy some magnets at your local hardware store. Either way, doesnt matter - no reason to buy the extra keys because they charge way too much for them. Overall, these are some really good locks to use with a baby in the house. I find them to be far superior to the typical plastic latch locks that are easily broken by older people in the house (ahem, teens) who dont feel like pushing down the latch to open cabinet doors..

Greater than one weekI bought these because I could not stand the latch locks. The installation template made it very easy to install. They seem to be very secure (my son hasn’t messed with the cabinets today). So far I love it.
