Update to initial review (which was a 1 star review) - I spent about 8 hours working on cloning my laptops HDD to this drive. This included a call to Samsung. I must say that I was somewhat impressed by Samsung Tech Support. I reached a human being, knowledgeable with the 850 EVO within about 3 minutes. Kudos. The Tech had several things to try, including changing some of the Windows Services I have running. He checked the driver on the SATA controller, told me it was old and directed me to an Intel URL where I could update. While the driver update was running we agreed to end the call and I would try to run the clone again. During the call he also suggested I use a freeware disk clone program I could download from the Internet as well as an uninstaller that I could use to uninstall the broken Samsung migration software. Well .... nothing the Tech had me do improved the Samsung Migration software. Just a bad combination of lap (Dell Inspiron), laptop age (2 years) and the Samsung migration software. I took the Techs advise and downloaded disk clone freeware from the Internet and installed. I had a learning curve and had to perform the clone twice before I could get it work. I wasted a LOT of time with that lesson, but at the end of the day, the clone worked. Turns out you have to do an exhaustive sector by sector copy and not an intelligent copy in order to get a bootable drive. The intelligent clone took about 35 minutes, and did not work. The exhaustive clone took about 65 minutes BUT IT WORKED. Now, initial thoughts about the speed of the SSD over my original HDD .. speed. The SSD is MUCH faster. Boot times my laptop (defined as the time between pressing the power on button to having a usable system) is better by about a factor of 10. Very impressive. So far I have used it about 60 minutes. Well see how it does long term. One star because 0 stars is not possible. Actually, I cant tell about the 850 EVO. Its the migration software. To say it is crap is to give it way too much credit. Simply put, the setup.exe never completes. The setup.exe stays in task manager, consumes no resources and never ends. There are no messages, no prompts. It just sits there. I finally rebooted my PC. I then checked programs in Control Panel, and it says the Migration Tool is installed. I looked for it in Program Files, and sure enough, there it is!. I tried to run it manually, but of course it failed. It couldnt find the SOURCE drive. So, I went back to Control Panel and tried to uninstall it the migration software by selecting it, then clicking uninstall. Seems simple enough. BUT, the install manager started and attempted to install it again! I cant get rid of the crap software! Junk, Junk, Junk! Yeah, I disabled McAfee too. For the record, my laptop is a two year old Dell Inspiron running Windows 8.1.

In a word, brilliant! You will not regret the speed boost, so dont delay upgrading any longer. This solid-state drive has DRASTICALLY improved the usability and responsiveness of my laptop. The daily frustration with a slow machine (caused by the slow access time of the hard disk drive) has completely gone! Now, the machine also weighs less, and the battery live has been extended no-doubt due to the reduced power requirements of the SSD. I regret my delay in choosing to buy an SSD; Im wishing that I could somehow retrieve the time that was lost while watching the spinning beach-ball, and the agonizing wait for my applications/files to load.

Ah I forgot the Samsung SATA interface can be tricky. This refused to play well with my Anker Drive Dock, also didnt like the idea of my USB SATA Adapter. Works perfectly well when connected Directly to the Disk Controller via the internal ports. Once I got it in place I could then clone in my Windows 8 drive..... (but thats a different story entirely)

Installed, still working a year later. Its nice and fast. Nothing to complain about really. Im just using it for games, so I needed mere fast storage not fastest. Also its samsung, so you know its not gonna be some 3rd rate crap that will die on you

Very nice addition to my i7 quad laptop. One of those few upgrades thatll noticeably save you time. I havent checked it out but this drive is probably good for battery life too.

Best upgrade Ive done for my computer. Included software makes it easy to clone your drive. However you can only clone your C: drive to a Samsung drive so dont think you can use the software to clone anything else.

Works like a charm! This is my very first SSD, and good lord, everything Ive heard is true. Not sure Id ever be satisfied with an HDD again. Doesnt run hot, performs perfectly, and it was easy to mount, hidden back with all of my cables. Went with this because Im a Samsung fan. Has yet to disappoint.

I’ve been looking at a SSD for a while and decided on the Samsung 850 500GB for my Dell 5559. Prior to installing boot time was just under a minute (drove me crazy) after installation boot time is 16 seconds. I used Samsung’s Data Migration and Highfine Universal 9.5 mm SATA to SATA 2nd SSD adapter tray to transfer the data from my original HHD to the new 850 Evo. I removed a lot of unneeded programs and transferred files (my documents and videos) to an external hard drive to minimize the time it would take to migrate the data which took just under an hour to complete. The migration tool was awesome and worked flawlessly. Once the SSD was placed in the original HHD slot my laptop booted up without any issues. Applications also open much faster. My original 1TB HHD is now extra storage for projects and videos. I will be buying 850 Evo’s for my other computers.

I am giving this product 2 stars, because I wanted it for the Samsung Magician Rapid Mode feature, which uses some of your RAM to greatly increases the speed of the drive.. Unfortunately, the Samsung Magician software isnt officially supported under Windows 10 and Rapid mode cant be enabled for 850 drives.(there is a work around for the 840 series) I cant believe that this hasnt been fixed yet. Many of us who installed the preview versions of Windows 10 knew this way before the Windows launch and it has been reported to Samsung by countless numbers of people. I think this is a real black mark against Samsung that they dont support their flagship SSD and I would not buy another 850 until this is fixed..

Excellent SSD. This is my first Samsung, I normally use Intel. My last Intel SSD would big down during heavy use and also started showing drive errors with alarming frequency after I started looking into it. Symptoms were request (daily) system hangs and pauses. I switched to Samsung and by comparison its a hoss. Pleased.

Upgrading your PC with a Samsung SSD is the most economical way to breathe new life into an aging PC. The 850 EVO reads, writes and multi tasks at incredible speeds, enhancing boot up speed, application loading and multi tasking performance. It"s more than an upgrade, it"s a complete transformation of your PC.
