This is a strong-performing unit with great range and flexibility.

The Good: The firmware auto-updated during installation The 5GHz speed is much better than the old routers if you are close the access points. The installation was unique but not difficult - prefer a built-in web interface that doesnt require software installed on a computer. The Bad: I installed 2 of these Access Points at 2 vacation homes separated by 300 feet, replacing the WiFi function on 2 older Buffalo routers that dont have 5GHz channels. The Spectrum modems dont have the router features needed, so I am still using the old routers for their router functions and for Dynamic DNS registration. I turned off their WiFi. With 300 feet of separation between homes, with the old Buffalo routers we could use each others Wi-Fi in a pinch. With the Unifi access points the neighboring homes arent even listed on our laptops or mobile devices. Using WiFi Analyzer software on my phone, I tried different physical positions and locations in these wood frame homes and the best I can get is poor range. If mounted horizontally, I found the Access Point were significantly directional, so I oriented them to reach the most distant points within these fairly small cabin-homes. IT is my business and my hobby, and I was very surprised at the poor range on these units. I may have to replace them, because the Wi-Fi on the outside Decks is barely usable at both homes. Tech Support reviewed my settings in the Unifi controller software and did not see any issues.

I already have UniFi going. It is more complicated than usual wifi routers, but the flexibility and security is incredible. I have used it for 5 years now, various units. This is a long range unit that had not been available when I purchased mine. All I had to do is plug it in wherever I wanted it. The rest is done by the software. Highly recommended!

Over the years ever since I got broadband internet I have been on the quest for whole home wifi. At first (11 - 12 years ago) few devices were on wifi and so so wifi was fine. However fast forward a decade, and the world had changed. I have spent so much time and money trying to get perfect coverage in my home. I have bought multiple routers to act as access points, in different parts of the house, yet I would still have issues with wifi. I finally looked into other solutions and I Ubiquiti kept on coming up as best bang for the buck. I ordered the unit through one of the distributors on Ubiquiti website. Overall the unit is really easy to install, it comes with a two part bracket (screws and wall anchors are included) that can be use for dropped ceilings or regular ceilings. The unit itself is about the size of a personal microwavable pizza, is pretty lightweight and has a nice blue light that isnt too overwhelming. The unit is powered by a Power of Ethernet (POE) adapter, but the POE is not the standard 48v 802.11f standard, instead is 24v (there is an adapter that can be purchased so you can use a standard 48v POE if you already have POE in your network environment. Once you have wired it up to your switch (please note there are NO Ethernet cables included in the box). The unit will power on and you are ready to adopt the access point to your network. ****PLEASE NOTE IF YOU ARE RUNNING WINDOWS FOR THE SOFTWARE INSTALLATION DISABLE THE WINDOWS FIREWALL***** I spent about half hour trying to figure out why the installation could not find the access point, even though my router had in fact given it an IP address. My best suggesting is run the software with the windows firewall disabled, the software does a good job of guiding you through the set up procedure to configure the unit for your network usage. The basic set up for most home users and some SOHO users will be more than enough. However if you need a more detailed setup online support can be found (although the software does a pretty good job too). It is important to note that be default the software will create one SSID with both 2.4 and 5GHz, you can tell the software to steer users to the 5GHz band or balance between both bands. Having this installed for a month has made me realize how bad consumer grade hardware is (off the shelf from BBY or WM or MC). This is access point intended enterprise deployments. With that in mind, lets talk performance, I did some internet speed testing before the install and found that standing right next to the access point I would max out at about 28 - 30mbps of my 50mbps ISP speed, on my iPad 4. Once I went into a different room that speed would drop by 10 and by the time I got to the other side of my ranch style home, the iPad would fail to connect to the testing server. However once I installed and configured the UAP AC LR, I was able for the first time max out my internet speed over wifi in most of my house (except for the garage and side yard which i was getting only 30-35 down). Since my install, I have tried to hit the wifi has hard as possible and the access point has been able to cope and balance users very well. Like mentioned above, overall the product is EXCELLENT, the only gripes I could think of have to do with the mounting of the access point to the ceiling, there is a rotate to lock provision to help deter theft. It certainly helps deter theft as it can be a bit of a pain to unmount in case you need troubleshoot (admittedly, there is a slot to insert a penny to help provide enough space to rotate the product clear). Second, I would like to have seen the use of a standard POE injector, purely for the fact that many users may already have POE on their networks (although there are adapters sold, and the PRO version of this access point does use the POE standard 48v) Lastly, you do need to be somewhat familiar with basic networking to get this going, even if you are not there is plently of information out there to help you. One last word about the controller software, if you only have the basic set up (one network with a PSK/WPA security, the controller software does not need to be be running all the time. However, if you start to fiddle around with VLANS, and other fancy features of the acess point, then you will need to keep the software up and running all the time. This would mean that you would need a computer running all the time, this is not a problem for most office users or even power pc users. However if you are concerned about the power consumption/cost there is a way to have the controller running on a Raspberry Pi, which would be perfect for a self contained solution with out the wear and tear for another computer. Overall, I think the product is an excellent product, the few gripes I may have with the product are really minor in the scheme of things, and can be easily overlooked for the benefits that the access point does provide. I would definitely say that you should buy this for your home, SOHO, or even a larger deployment.

Im currently in the process of returning the second booster. I purchased the first, and my IT guy said that we werent getting any power to it. (This is with the very first use when trying to set it up.) I just got the second one in a few days ago, and I already had to order the third because the seond one wasnt getting power to it either. This has been VERY frustrating. While returning has been successful, its still very discouraging to continue trying a product that we cant even use once. I am trying just once more, and if the third booster doesnt work, we are going to use another brand.

Horrible customer service. Just terrible. Be aware, they do not take returns under ANY circumstances. Thats right, just ask their tech support. I have it from them in writing. Ubiquiti does not back their products. This is not my only product from Ubiquiti, but it will be my last.

I have installed a number of these and find them to work very well. While most routers lack penetration after several devices are connected this works very well. I would highly recommend for residential and commercial usage, as this what I have deployed in.

After my previous router decided to die in a thunderstorm (Asus RT-N66U) I decided to try this for wifi since it seemed so popular among the tech crowd. Oh my god could I not be happier with this. With the wifi on my old router the wifi would go about 20 feet outside my house. This easily goes all the way to the property line while still streaming Netflix. Only other thing I will add is if you just use a single unit then dont install the Unifi software on a computer. Just install their app on a phone and be done with it in less than five minutes.
